The Powell River Airport rehabilitation project was completed on time and $1.1 million under budget, city councillors were informed on February 6. Director of infrastructure Tor Birtig reported that the project, funded by over $8 million from the Airport Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) and $1 million from the Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program (CERIP), included runway rehabilitation, electrical upgrades with LED lights, and safety improvements.
Although geotechnical issues limited the runway extension to 146 feet instead of the planned 426 feet, the project improved load capacity and safety. The total cost was $6.9 million, with minor outstanding items like grass seeding pending. Additionally, CERIP funds will be redirected to landfill capping and other airport upgrades, including taxiway Bravo and the parking lot.
