Aachen-based battery recycling company cylib has acquired a facility for the discharge, disassembly, and mechanical processing of end-of-life electric vehicle batteries in Wernberg-Köblitz, Bavaria. According to the company, the site will be capable of processing up to 10,000 metric tons of end-of-life batteries annually. The acquisition was completed through insolvency proceedings and includes the processing line, buildings, and property. Operations are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to approval under Germany’s Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG).

According to the company, the acquisition expands cylib’s battery recycling value chain. The black mass produced at the Bavarian facility is intended to be supplied to the company’s hydrometallurgical plant currently under construction in Dormagen. There, materials including lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, and manganese are expected to be recovered.

According to the company, the Wernberg-Köblitz facility represents the first element of a network for the collection and mechanical pre-processing of end-of-life EV batteries. The site is located close to major automotive and battery manufacturing hubs in southern Germany and Central Europe. The company says this will help secure access to larger volumes of end-of-life batteries. According to the company, the facility is expected to reach full capacity by the end of 2027.
