Saudi Arabia’s King Salman officially inaugurated the Riyadh Metro on Wednesday, ending a 12-year megaproject involving dozens of engineering, design and contracting firms from all over the world.
Estimated to have cost in the region of $23bn, the driverless system has six lines totalling 176km, with 85 stations, 34 of them elevated.
Signature architects designed four, iconic interchange stations.
The system is designed to carry up to 3.6 million passengers a day, bringing relief to commuters in a rapidly growing city choked by the cars it was designed for.
Since preparations for the metro began in 2012, Riyadh’s population has grown nearly 40% to 7.8 million.
“Today, Riyadh City is reaping the benefits of this project that will reshape the capital’s image and redefine mobility for its residents and visitors,” said Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Sultan, chief executive of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City.
The system will open for passengers in phases, with lines 1, 4, and 6 (Blue, Yellow, and Purple) opening on Sunday, 1 December.
Lines 2 (Red) and 5 (Green) are scheduled to open 15 December, while Line 3 (Orange) is set to open on 5 January.
In 2013, three international construction and engineering consortia were awarded contracts to design and build the lines and stations.
The “FAST” consortium won the biggest package, delivering lines 4, 5, and 6.
It was led by Spain’s FCC with partners Samsung C&T (South Korea), Alstom (France), Strukton (Netherlands), Freyssinet Saudi Arabia (KSA), Atkins (now AtkinsRéalis, Canada), Typsa (Spain), and Setec (France).
It marshalled 8,000 personnel combining 38 nationalities and 22 languages.
Lines 1 and 2 went to the “BACS” consortium comprising Bechtel (USA), Almabani (KSA), Consolidated Contractors Company (Greece), and Siemens (Germany).
The “ANM” consortium built Line 3. Its members are Webuild (formerly Salini Impregilo, Italy), Hitachi (Japan), Bombardier (now Alstom), Larsen & Toubro (India), Nesma & Partners (KSA), Idom (Spain), and Worley Parsons (Australia).
The “RMTC” consortium of Egis (France), Parsons (USA), and Systra (France) also provided supervisory and project management services for Lines 1, 2, and 3.
Signature architects designed the network’s four, iconic interchange stations after an international competition organised by RCRC.
Zaha Hadid Architects (UK) designed King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) station; Snøhetta (Norway) designed Qasr Al Hokm station; Gerber Architekten (Germany) designed STC station; and Omrania (KSA) designed Western Station.
KAFD and Qasr Al Hokm stations have won gold LEED certifications.
The system’s 183 trains were manufactured by Siemens (Germany) and Alstom (with Bombardier, France) to a unified design by Avant Premiere (France).

Alstom To Modernise Lyon Metro With New Trains Under $345M ContractAlstom has signed a deal exceeding €300m ($345m) with SYTRAL Mobilités to modernise Line D of the Lyon metro.
The deal includes the supply of 26 new-generation automatic metros valued at €145m, plus the €158m Alstom will receive for enhancing the systems and automation on Line D.
The development marks a new phase for Line D, which is the busiest line of the metro network, and is part of a comprehensive plan to modernise the entire system.
The new MPL25 two-car metro trains, designed to carry more than 300 passengers, will be fully automated and interoperable with the MPL16 trains currently in operation on Line B, allowing for extended formations of up to four cars.
These trains are set to offer passengers improved amenities such as large windows, a refrigerated ventilation system, LED lighting, and information screens. Additionally, the trains are 96% recyclable and feature an eco-friendly design.
Emphasising accessibility, the design includes spacious entrance areas accommodating individuals with reduced mobility, wide corridors and doorways, as well as open circulation between cars.

The upgrade of Line D’s automatic control system will employ Alstom’s Urbalis signalling solution, which is already implemented on Lyon’s Line B, to facilitate driverless operation.
The Urbalis solution will provide enhanced transport capacity, addressing the challenge of rising ridership on the Lyon metro lines, while also promoting energy-efficient operations.
The Lyon metro project will engage experts from seven Alstom sites in France, each contributing specialised components and services, from train assembly to cybersecurity.
These sites include Valenciennes, Ornans, Le Creusot, Tarbes, Villeurbanne, Crespin, and Saint-Ouen, the latter being home to Europe’s largest railway engineering centre.
Furthermore, Alstom is set to deliver propulsion components for an additional 435 R211 series subway cars for New York City Transit, following an option exercised with Kawasaki Rail Car.
This will result in over 80% of the NYCT fleet being equipped with Alstom’s propulsion systems.

Railway Multitracking Projects Worth Rs. 11,169 Crore Got Approved Across A 574 Km Rail NetworkThe Cabinet has approved four multitracking projects worth Rs. 11,169 crore across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand. The project covers 13 districts and 574 km of rail network. It will improve freight movement, generate employment, minimise CO₂ emissions and reinforce multi-modal connectivity under the PM Gati Shakti plan.
Introduction:
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has sanctioned four significant railway multitracking projects to accelerate the capacity and efficiency of India’s rail network. These Rs. 11,169 crore projects will extend the network by 574 km and are expected to be completed by 2028-29.
Projects Overview:
The Ministry of Railways will execute the following four multitracking projects–
These projects span 13 districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand, boosting regional connectivity and logistical efficiency.
Economic and Employment Impact:
The projects will generate significant direct and indirect employment and support the government’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” by fostering regional economic growth.

Alstom to increase safety and control Urbalis driverless signaling solution will put it into practice. This CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) system, increases frequency and reliability even in infrastructures without a platform gate and is compatible with European cybersecurity standards.
The Urbalis system, currently implemented on more than 32 lines in 190 countries, is also being used successfully on Lyon's Metro Line B. The system is expected to reduce service intervals and energy consumption while accommodating increasing passenger numbers.
This comprehensive project involves seven different Alstom sites across France. Train assembly takes place in Valenciennes, while Le Creusot will supply the bogies and Villeurbanne will oversee on-board electronics and cybersecurity. Other sites will provide critical components such as motors, traction systems, maintenance systems, and signaling technology.
Alstom, which employs more than 2.000 experts in digital mobility, is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable transportation with this project. This modernization of Lyon Metro line D underscores France's commitment to innovation and green infrastructure.

Noida Metro Aqua Line To Extend By 2.60 Km Under Rs. 416 Crore ProjectThe Government of India has approved the extension of Noida Metro’s Aqua Line from Depot Station to the Multimodal Transport Hub (MMTH) at Boraki. The corridor spans across 2.6 km and will play an instrumental role in improving urban connectivity in Greater Noida. The project worth nearly Rs. 416.34 crore is a strategic step to accelerate infrastructure development and support multimodal networks. This work is scheduled to be completed within 3 years.

The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) has announced that the Government of India has officially sanctioned the extension of the Aqua Line Metro Corridor. This 2.60 kilometers long extension in Greater Noida will connect the current Depot Station to the upcoming Multimodal Transport Hub (MMTH) at Boraki.
Before this approval the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has sanctioned the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the same project. This significant step towards urban connectivity and sustainable development shows the efforts of both the Central and State governments.

The Tender Process For The 21-Kilometer Southern Metro Line Begins In Kocaeli!The tender process is beginning for a massive project that will revolutionize Kocaeli's transportation system. It will connect the districts of İzmit and Gölcük. The project tender for the 21-kilometer-long "Southern Light Rail System Line" will be held on Wednesday, July 30. This project aims to greatly ease urban transportation by further expanding Kocaeli's rail system network.
The Metropolitan Municipality is taking another important step toward its goal of building a railway network throughout Kocaeli. The Metropolitan Municipality is implementing projects to ease traffic congestion, and is also expanding its rail network. In this context, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the Metropolitan Municipality launched a joint project. Körfezray Metro Project Field work at 5 stations in the Izmit district continues as planned. Prepared by the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality and implemented within the framework of the Kocaeli Transportation Master Plan (KUAP 2053), the Southern Light Rail System Line is poised to meet a significant transportation need in the southern corridor of the city. The line, which will start from Gölcük and extend to İzmit via Başiskele, will serve with 17 stations. The line is projected to carry 202 passengers daily. This number will reach 2053 by the target year of 335. By the time it opens, the annual passenger count is expected to be approximately 71 million.
Within the scope of the tender to be held on July 30, 2025, the contractor company will carry out the feasibility and cost studies of the line, determine route alternatives, and prepare preliminary projects for the station and depot area within 120 days. Additionally, a promotional album and an animated film featuring three-dimensional visuals of station locations, storage areas and transfer centers will be included in the project package.
With the implementation of the rail system The travel time from Gölcük to Izmit center will be reduced to just 28 minutes. This will greatly relieve heavy traffic, especially in the morning and evening hours.
By integrating the Southern Line with the Northern Metro Line, which is currently under construction by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, uninterrupted metro transportation will be provided on long lines such as Gölcük-Körfez and Gölcük-Kartepe.

The project will facilitate access to city centers and, by integrating with other planned rail lines, will make Kocaeli a model city in rail transportation infrastructure.

The 13-year agreement, which includes the option for a two-year extension, aligns with India’s Digital India initiative and the drive towards smart mobility by integrating digital capabilities into the urban public transport system.
BMRCL managing director Maheshwar Rao M said: “This partnership is another step towards delivering future-ready mobility solutions while ensuring sustainability and operational efficiency.
“The new infrastructure will support multiple operators, reduce duplication, and enable faster roll-out of 4G/5G services. Commuters across these corridors can expect uninterrupted connectivity during their metro journeys.”
Alongside Namma Metro, ACES India is actively engaged in telecommunications infrastructure projects at Bangalore International Airport, Mumbai Metro Line 3, Noida International Airport, Surat Diamond Bourse, Kanpur Metro, and Agra Metro.
In November 2022, the 44.65km phase three of Namma Metro was approved by the state government.

Ec Allocates €2.2 Billion From Cef For Railway ProjectsAs part of the latest edition of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, the European Commission (EC) has allocated €2.2 billion in funding for projects on the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) corridors. This represents 77% of the total €2.8 billion CEF co-financing package. The funds are earmarked for the construction of Rail Baltica, infrastructure improvements in Greece and Slovakia, and high-speed rail (HSR) projects in the Czech Republic and Poland. In addition, 46 projects in 11 countries, including Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Sweden, will receive support for the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). A total of 94 transport projects were selected from 258 applications.
