U.S. Department of Transportation
has announced a $465.8 million grant for improvements at Washington Union Station. Funding for the project comes from the $4.75 billion
Northeast Corridor Partnership Program
.
Partnering with the Union Station Redevelopment Corp. (USRC),
Amtrak
and the Federal Railroad Administration, USDOT will use the grant funds to fast-track critical structural repairs and enhance the passenger concourse, the Amtrak lounge and ticketing operations. The funding will also support upgrades to security and family-friendly infrastructure, USDOT officials said in a press release.
Funding will go toward projects that improve overall passenger experience while supporting both existing and future rail services without sacrificing the historic nature of the station. State-of-good-repair work includes replacement of the aging roof and repairs to the parking garage and station interior.
"USDOT will now leverage the valuable commercial aspects of Union Station, under the direct management of USRC, to reinvest in Union Station. USDOT is actively boosting revenue streams through optimized retail leases, parking, digital signage, office spaces and special events," USDOT officials said.
