As the industry faces growing pressures on operational efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience, both parties have committed to exploring joint initiatives that digitalise, automate, and optimise airport operations. The collaboration aims to enhance operational stability and customer satisfaction through pilot projects with startups, including those supported by LIH Ventures. A key example is the deployment of two autonomous robots by robotics startup Ottonomy at Munich Airport Terminal 2. These robots operate at the gates and baggage claim area, helping passengers with information, promoting Lufthansa’s services, and directing them to digital self-service tools via QR codes. “Our mission is to offer our guests the best travel experience in Europe,” said Marcus Schnabel, Vice President Ground Operations Hub Munich. “Embracing digital solutions is crucial to this endeavour, and we are delighted to be a testing ground for pioneering innovations.” The Ottonomy robots also feature integrated containers for transporting goods, such as bottled water, offering future potential to streamline passenger services. “Our robots, powered by Contextual AI, are enabling enterprise customers to drive innovation, delivering better customer experiences and operational efficiencies in the aviation industry,” said Ritukar Vijay, CEO of Ottonomy. L2 Aviation Now Open At Cvg AirportErlanger, KY (April 16, 2025) – L2 Aviation, a leading provider of global avionics services (think flight control systems and other electronics installed in an aircraft) held a grand opening ceremony at CVG Airport today. The ceremony took place inside the company’s hangar and included remarks from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear as well as L2 Aviation and CVG officials. After remarks, a ribbon cutting ceremony took place outside of L2 Aviation’s accompanying office building near the hangar. Guests were treated with tours of the facilities. Over the last several months, L2 Aviation remodeled an office building and hangar space and expects to be fully operational by the end of this year, adding 250 jobs and investing $12.2 million at CVG. The company is now hiring, and its services include engineering, certification, installation, fleet modernization, and manufacturing, which complement existing and future aircraft maintenance and repair services on CVG’s campus. “Kentucky’s aviation and aerospace industry has seen tremendous growth in the last few years,” said Gov. Carvalho as senior vice president and general counsel, succeeding Johnna Spera, who retires at the end of this week. Carvalho currently serves as senior legal counsel at the Massachusetts Port Authority, or “Massport,” which operates Boston Logan International Airport, Worcester Regional Airport, Laurence G. Hanscom Field, the Conley Container Terminal and Flynn Cruiseport. Ashley K. Carvalho Carvalho has been with Massport since 2017, focusing on regulatory compliance, policy development, contract negotiations, litigation and other legal matters. Her prior work includes serving as an attorney with the City of Boston, the Committee for Public Counsel Services in Boston, the Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney in Florida and private law practice. Mr. Lyttle will oversee Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Orlando Executive Airport (ORL). MCO is one of the nation’s Top 10 airports, welcoming more than 57 million annual passengers in 2024. ORL provides vital general aviation access to the heart of the Central Florida region. In addition to day-to-day operations, Mr. Lyttle will lead a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program to enhance both airports. These improvements include extensive renovations of Terminals A and B, construction of a Consolidated Rental Car (ConRAC) Facility, and installation of a state-of-the-art parking guidance system, among other projects. “Lance Lyttle is a visionary leader with a strong history of driving major airport projects,” said Tim Weisheyer, GOAA Board Chairman. “In just his first week, he’s hit the ground running – bringing energy, insight, and a clear commitment to excellence. Balfour Beatty Construction was selected as the Design-Builder of this important project. The $71.9 million project will improve the passenger journey by renovating all existing restrooms, and adding new restrooms or expanding existing restrooms where space permits. This project includes all four airsides, providing additional capacity to meet anticipated future passenger demands. Additional improvements will include renovations to companion restrooms and service animal relief areas. Funding for the project will come from a combination of Federal Aviation Administration Grants, Capital Expenditure Funds, and a line of credit reimbursed by General Airport Revenue Bonds. Restroom renovations and expansions are part of a broader renovation project in the Terminals. The renovation projects are set for substantial completion between 2027 and 2028, marking a new era of comfort and convenience for passengers at Orlando International Airport.

With this new system — expected to make a significant contribution to the Turkish economy — iGA Istanbul Airport now has the capacity for simultaneous take-off and landing operations on three independent runways. As a result, the airport’s hourly air traffic capacity has increased from 120 to 148 aircraft movements. This operational transformation not only optimises traffic management in Istanbul but also across European airspace, making it faster, safer, and more efficient. The additional 28 aircraft movements per hour mean shorter waiting times for airlines, fewer delays for passengers, and reduced carbon emissions for the environment. This system plays a crucial role in supporting iGA Istanbul Airport’s vision of accommodating 200 million passengers per annum. A key component is the airport collaborative decision making (A-CDM) system, which will enhance the predictability of air traffic movements, improve slot allocation, and ensure more efficient runway usage. The transformation process at İGA Istanbul Airport began in 2022. A comprehensive safety analysis and airspace design process was carried out in close cooperation with the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM), Turkish Airlines (THY), EUROCONTROL, and other international authorities. During this period, 500 air traffic controllers undertook 4,500 hours of training based on specially developed operational scenarios for the new system. Norfolk International Airport Earns 4-Star Rating At 2025 Passenger Terminal ExpoNorfolk, VA (April 16, 2025) – Norfolk International Airport (ORF) has been awarded a 4-Star Regional Airport Rating after a recent rigorous onsite audit by London-based Skytrax. Skytrax aviation research ratings are known as a global benchmark of airport standards, developed through many years of professional experience and qualitative knowledge of the airport industry. Additionally, at the World Airport Awards, Skytrax revealed the results of their annual airport customer satisfaction survey at the Passenger Terminal Expo 2025 on April 9 in Madrid, Spain. ORF was one of more than 575 airports rated in the survey and was recognized as the #4 airport in the world among the World’s Best Domestic Airports and the top-ranked U.S. airport in this category surpassing Dallas Love Field, Chicago Midway, and Kansas City. ORF was also acknowledged as the only U.S. airport among the global top ten best airports handling less than 5 million passengers. Norfolk Airport Authority President and CEO Mark Perryman states “We engaged Skytrax for an intensive two-day airport audit in February. The report concluded that ORF is continuing to deliver a 4-Star Airport experience across various frontline product and service categories, demonstrating ongoing progress. Customer satisfaction levels in most touchpoints are generally above the 4-Star Rating level. Improvement opportunities are being addressed, and when completed Norfolk International Airport is well-positioned to achieve the highest 5-Star Airport Rating.

Kansai International Airport’S New-Look T1 Ready For World ExpoKansai International Airport’s fully refurbished Terminal 1 has opened to accommodate the millions of passengers expected to pass through the iconic building to attend World Expo in Osaka. The new Terminal 1 includes a 60% increase in the size of the international departure lounge and retail offerings, the introduction of innovative retail layouts based on passenger experiences, and the creation of a seamless processing experience. Kansai Airports and global design firm Populous have been working for more than seven years to completely reimagine the airport’s floor plan, bringing a new level of efficiency and experience for travellers to western Japan. Populous led the architecture and interior design of the redevelopment, as well overseeing the project throughout construction. The project was completed in four phases to allow for continued operations of the airport, which is expected to accommodate more than 40 million passengers a year from 2025 and almost double international capacity. In October 2022, KIX opened the new Phase 1 domestic area followed by the new international area. Phase 2 of the project was completed in December 2023, and included 6,650 square metres of additional airside retail outlets, 1,130 square metres of food and beverage space and a new centralised immigration area. Phase 3 was completed on March 27, 2025, allowing the consolidation and extension of the security screening area to be ready before World Expo 2025 begins in April in Osaka. Phase 3 includes faster, more comfortable and smoother security inspection with additional smart lanes capable of processing between 4,500 and 6,000 passengers an hour. The new queuing management system is the first of its kind in Japan, automatically controlling flapper gates to switch waiting lines by utilising real-time passenger flow data. The system enables passengers to be automatically guided to the security inspection lanes based on the number of passengers and their flow. A new commercial area includes 13 stores across international departures, international arrivals and a street food court. The project has already been recognised for its architectural vision as a finalist in the 2023 World Architecture Festival Awards for Future Projects – Infrastructure. Regarded as part of the high-tech architecture movement of the 1990s, KIX’s industrial design is famous for its asymmetrical clear-span sweeping aerofoil roofline. At 1.7km long, it is one of the longest airport passenger terminal buildings in the world.

Their functions include assisting passengers with information and promoting Lufthansa Airlines’ services. Passengers can interact with the robots by scanning a QR code, which directs them to Lufthansa’s chat assistant for self-service options, including flight information and rebooking processes. The robots will also provide information such as tax refunds and lost and found services. In addition to passenger assistance, the robots are equipped with integrated containers for transporting goods, with plans to distribute bottled water to passengers in the future. This pilot project is part of Startup Gate, Lufthansa Group’s venture clienting initiative, which connects the airline with startups to facilitate the swift adoption of new technologies. Airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East are set for a combined investment of US$240 billion between 2025 and 2035, targeting both the upgrade of existing facilities and construction of new airports. This was revealed by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), representing over 600 airports across 46 countries and territories. A recent ACI APAC & MID survey of more than 30 key airports outlined two strategic focuses: brownfield (modernising existing infrastructure) and greenfield (new airport development). Brownfield projects will account for US$136 billion, creating capacity for 680 million additional passengers and 14 million tonnes of cargo. Greenfield projects will see US$104 billion invested to add capacity for 562 million passengers and 57 million tonnes of cargo. The total increase—1.24 billion passengers and 71 million tonnes of cargo—is equivalent to 13 Dubai International Airports in passenger volume and 14 times Hong Kong International Airport’s cargo throughput. This growth will help meet anticipated demand in the region. The Southern California gateway’s passenger count totaled 559,619 last month, up 0.5% from March 2024. This capital expenditure, revealed today by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), the trade association representing over 600 airports from 46 countries/territories, highlights the regions’ commitment to meeting the increasing demand for air travel and cargo. ACI APAC & MID conducted a comprehensive survey, comprising over 30 key airports from the region to assess airport development needs. The findings indicate a strategic focus on both modernisation of the existing airports and development of new airport infrastructure. – Brownfield Development (Modernisation of existing airports): More than $136 billion would be invested to upgrade existing airports, creating an additional 680 million passenger capacity and 14 million tonnes of cargo capacity. – Greenfield Development (Development of new airports): In excess of $104 billion will be allocated to build new airports, adding 562 million passenger capacity and 57 million tonnes of cargo capacity. This combined investment will create additional capacity for 1.24 billion passengers – the equivalent of more than 13 airports the size of Dubai (DXB) the world’s busiest airport for international passengers—and 71 million tonnes of cargo capacity, which equals nearly 14 times the cargo throughput of Hong Kong (HKG), the top ranked airport for Cargo in the world. This significant increase will ensure airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East are well-equipped to handle anticipated future growth. Rather than overextending, airports in these regions continue to align investment closely with market conditions and passenger demand forecasts, ensuring capital is deployed efficiently and sustainably. Aci Reveals World'S Busiest Airports In 2024Airports Council International (ACI) World has released preliminary data on the world’s busiest airports for 2024, highlighting a resilient recovery in global air travel despite ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainty. The early rankings provide an overview of global airport performance across passenger traffic, cargo volumes, and aircraft movements. According to ACI World’s early estimates, nearly 9.5 billion passengers travelled through airports worldwide in 2024, representing a 9% increase compared to 2023 and a 3.8% rise over pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The ten busiest airports accounted for 9% of global traffic, serving a total of 855 million passengers—an 8.8% increase from 2023. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its position as the world’s busiest airport, followed by Dubai International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Notably, Shanghai Pudong International Airport rose from 21st to 10th place in the global rankings. The airport’s ascent was supported by policy changes easing visa access, growth in international flight services, and a broader recovery in the Asia-Pacific aviation sector. Istanbul Airport and New Delhi International Airport also maintained strong positions in the rankings, reflecting sustained growth driven by their infrastructure developments and airline expansions. Airports continued to face a complex operating environment in 2024. Factors such as supply chain disruptions, aircraft production delays, and geopolitical tensions contributed to rising operational costs and uncertainty around flight planning. In some regions, proposed trade tariffs and global construction inflation presented additional risks to passenger and cargo growth. Despite these pressures, ACI World projects that global passenger traffic will reach approximately 9.9 billion in 2025, with an annual growth rate of 4.8%. However, growth is expected to transition from post-pandemic recovery to more gradual, long-term expansion. In advanced economies, capacity constraints and slower economic growth may influence this trend, while emerging markets are anticipated to drive further expansion due to increased infrastructure investment and rising travel demand among middle-income populations. Global air cargo volumes reached over 124 million metric tonnes in 2024, marking an 8.4% year-on-year increase and a 3.9% gain compared to 2019. The top ten cargo airports handled approximately 32.3 million metric tonnes—around 26% of total global cargo—representing a 9.3% year-on-year increase. The growth in air cargo was largely attributed to continued e-commerce demand, disruptions in maritime shipping, and reduced jet fuel costs. Hong Kong International Airport remained the world’s busiest cargo hub, followed by Shanghai Pudong and Memphis International Airports. An estimated 100 million aircraft movements occurred globally in 2024, reflecting a 4.3% increase from 2023. This figure is approximately 97.4% of the movement levels recorded in 2019. The ten busiest airports accounted for more than 6% of global movements, with a total of 6.4 million flights. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, and Dallas Fort Worth ranked as the top three airports for aircraft movements. The rankings are based on preliminary data collected from over 2,700 airports worldwide. Final figures will be published by ACI World in July 2025. Transforming JFK Into a World-Class Global Gateway In January 2017, the JFK Vision Plan was announced to transform JFK into the world-class airport that New Yorkers deserve. Long Beach Airport Celebrates Completion Of Terminal Roadway ImprovementsLong Beach, CA – Long Beach Airport (LGB) officials today marked the completion of the Airport’s Terminal Roadway Improvements Project, which has resulted in improved vehicular and passenger flow and additional enhancements for those with mobility challenges. “Our award-winning Long Beach Airport is making it even easier for travelers to get on their way with these roadway upgrades,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “For more than a century, LGB has been committed to smooth travels, and the completion of this critical road work ensures an even more seamless and convenient experience.” Underway since January 2024, the Terminal Roadway Improvements Project provides Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) enhancements, including more curb space, crosswalks, ramps, signage, handrails and lighting in front of the main drop-off and pick-up area. These enhancements will improve traffic flow and make the area safer and more easily navigable for pedestrians. Some underground work was also done to upgrade several utilities, including sewer lines connected to the Historic Terminal. “The Airport’s continued investment in modern infrastructure is delivering real benefits,” said Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr. “With these terminal roadway upgrades, we are excited to see travelers experience better traffic flow and improved pedestrian access.” The total cost of the project was $16.6 million, with $10.6 million funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and the remainder funded by Airport revenue. “At Long Beach Airport, we like to say ‘the going is easy’—and now, it’s even easier,” said Airport Director Cynthia Guidry. “With these roadway improvements complete, travelers can enjoy even more convenience from curb to gate.” Officially trademarked as america’s coolest airport™, LGB provides a distinctively stress-free journey and a first-class customer experience conveniently located at a central position between Los Angeles and Orange counties. Airports Council International (ACI) World has revealed its 2024 preliminary rankings of the world’s busiest airports, highlighting their resilience amid global uncertainty. Despite ongoing geopolitical and economic challenges, these key international hubs have retained their top positions and are poised for continued growth. Justin Erbacci, Director General of ACI World, said: “Amid global challenges, the resilience of the world’s busiest airports shines. These hubs are vital arteries of trade, commerce, and connectivity. As air travel grows, ACI World stands ready to support its members, ensuring the smooth flow of people and goods that drive global economic, social, and cultural progress.” ACI’s data estimates global passenger traffic in 2024 to reach nearly 9.5 billion, a 9% increase from 2023 and a 3.8% rise from pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The top 10 busiest airports, handling 855 million passengers in total, represent 9% of global traffic. They recorded an 8.8% increase on 2023 figures and an 8.4% increase compared to 2019. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport maintained its position as the world’s busiest, followed by Dubai International and Dallas Fort Worth International. Shanghai Pudong International Airport made the biggest leap in the rankings, climbing from 21st in 2023 to 10th in 2024. This rise is attributed to China’s relaxed visa rules, expanded international flight schedules, and the region’s broader recovery, alongside operational improvements. Istanbul and New Delhi International Airports also showed continued momentum, driven by airline growth, infrastructure expansion, and increased global connectivity. Both airports have significantly outperformed their 2019 performance, demonstrating the sustained strength of emerging aviation markets. Naples Airport Authority Survey To Measure Community SentimentNAPLES, Fla. (April 14, 2025) – The Naples Airport Authority has commissioned a scientific survey of area residents to collect detailed community feedback on airport operations, location and other key issues to help better chart the historic site’s future course. The survey measured opinions among more than 1,400 Collier County voters selected by random sampling who were interviewed by telephone and text from mid-March to early April. The survey was conducted by American Pulse, an independent research and polling firm. “Measuring community sentiment towards the Naples Airport is an important step in planning for the future,” said Chris Rozansky, Naples Airport Authority executive director. “The results of this survey will equip our governing board with valuable information to better serve our community.” The survey includes questions about respondents’ attitudes towards the airport’s effect on quality of life, the economy, a possible relocation, and public services among other topics. Copies of the survey questionnaire can be found here. Survey results are expected to be presented at the April 17 meeting of the Naples Airport Authority Board of Commissioners.
