Dallas Fort Worth International Airport reaches a key milestone in its $3 billion Terminal C overhaul, successfully moving six massive modules into place.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has reached a significant milestone in its $3 billion overhaul of Terminal C. Six massive modules, including one weighing 1,200 tons and measuring 204 feet by 68 feet, were successfully moved across two closed runways overnight using self-propelled modular transporters. This engineering achievement is part of the ongoing project to expand Terminal C, which will add nine new gates by 2026.

“At the core of our airport’s DNA is innovation, and the techniques being used to reimagine Terminal C are an example of that in action,” said Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW. “I’m proud of the DFW team for continuously pushing boundaries when it comes to proving forward-thinking construction processes. This is just one of many milestones as we undergo this historic period of growth and expansion.”

DFW’s use of modular construction has proven highly successful, having been pioneered in 2022. The airport again demonstrated its leadership by pre-installing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems in the six modules before transport. This reduces on-site disruptions, keeping gate closures and airside complexities to a minimum.

“The use of modular construction reduces the impact on-site by enabling dual-site activity,” said Mohamed Charkas, Executive Vice President of Infrastructure and Development at DFW. “This minimises disruptions in terminal areas while modules are built offsite.”

This milestone is part of a larger $3 billion expansion plan, which includes the complete reconstruction of the adjacent parking garage. In partnership with American Airlines, the project is being managed by HNTB, KAI, and ADPI, with a contractor joint venture comprising Austin Commercial, Azteca Enterprises, and Alpha & Omega. HOK and Muller & Muller, Ltd. are serving as design team members.

DFW’s construction updates and traveller information can be accessed via their mobile app or on their website, ensuring that passengers stay informed about the ongoing developments.
