The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to acquire and transfer land for the expansion of Shillong Airport within three months. The order, issued on December 16 by Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh, highlights the airport's development as critical for Meghalaya's progress.
The expansion will allow operations of larger, advanced aircraft, boosting passenger and cargo capacity. The directive responds to a PIL concerning runway extension and infrastructure development. While land acquisition has started, delays persist in transferring the property to airport authorities.
The Airports Authority of India and the Director General of Civil Aviation must finalize and implement a comprehensive plan within three months after land transfer. A progress review is scheduled for April 14, 2025. The project aims to enhance Meghalaya's economic and tourism potential.

BER passengers can now use 24 security lanes with modern CT scanners, keeping electronics and liquids in hand luggage for faster, stress-free checks.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) passengers can now use 24 lanes with modern CT scanners for security controls. The final four security lanes in Control Area 1 of Terminal 1 were put into operation on Wednesday, significantly ahead of schedule. With this completion, both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are fully equipped with CT scanners, allowing passengers to keep electronic devices and liquids in their hand luggage in these areas.

“I am very pleased that we were able to complete the entire renovation of the security lines in the northern area of Terminal 1 ahead of schedule. The past few weeks of the holidays have shown that the investment and effort involved in the renovation have been worthwhile. The vast majority of travellers were able to pass through security controls with waiting times of less than ten minutes, and thus enjoy a stress-free start to their holidays. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my FBB colleagues and all involved partners for their commitment.”
Control Area 5 in the South Pavilion of Terminal 1 has been operational since April. All eight security lanes in Terminal 2 have been using the new equipment since early 2024. Work on Control Area 1 in the North Pavilion began in May 2025 and was originally scheduled for completion in autumn. Thanks to excellent cooperation from all partners, the lanes were opened earlier than planned, with the first four lanes in operation since the start of the summer holidays. About three-quarters of BER passengers are already benefiting from the new CT lanes across both terminals.
All converted lanes are equipped with CT scanners from Smiths Detection, capable of screening larger quantities of liquids. Some lanes are still awaiting a software update, so passengers are advised to continue limiting liquids to containers of 100 ml or less and a total of one litre in hand luggage. Conventional X-ray scanners remain in use at 18 security controls in the central area of Terminal 1, and further renovations in the main hall are in preparation.
For faster access, travellers are encouraged to check monitors in the terminals, the BER website and the app for the shortest waiting times, and select the most convenient security control. All BER gates can be accessed from both terminals and every security control. Passengers can continue to use BER Runway or BER Biometrics free of charge to book a fixed time slot. Conventional X-ray scanners remain in use in Control Area 4 for BER Runway, requiring removal of electronics and liquids from hand luggage.

Chicago has launched construction of the new Concourse D at O’Hare (ORD), a $1.3 billion project set to expand capacity, enhance facilities, and strengthen global connectivity.
Mayor Brandon Johnson has joined federal, state, local and airline leaders to mark the start of construction on the new Concourse D at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The $1.3 billion development represents the first major milestone in O’Hare’s historic terminal expansion and is set to transform the passenger experience, strengthen Chicago’s status as a global aviation hub and prepare the airport for decades of future growth.
“To maintain Chicago’s global leadership in the 21st century, we must continue investing in O’Hare, our region’s most powerful economic engine,” said Mayor Johnson. “With construction now underway on The New Concourse D, my administration is committed to building upon the airport’s legacy by delivering modern, world-class facilities that will elevate the passenger experience at America’s best-connected hub.”
Michael McMurray, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), said the project marked the first phase of a new development stage within the O’Hare 21 capital programme, now branded ORDNext. “By breaking ground on Concourse D, we are taking a critical first step toward enhancing how the airport welcomes and serves more than 80 million passengers each year,” McMurray said. “We are also proud to introduce ORDNext, a new stage of development in the O’Hare 21 capital program that will elevate the passenger experience, improve connections between domestic and international flights, and increase the airport’s footprint to accommodate future growth. I’m grateful to our hub carriers for making this investment on behalf of the passengers we are proud to serve every day.”
The two largest hub carriers at ORD are fully behind the project.

Concourse D will add 19 new gates for narrow-body aircraft, with flexibility for 18 of those gates to be adapted into nine larger stands for wide-body planes. The concourse will feature more than 20,000 square feet of lounge space, 30,000 square feet of retail and food outlets, and a 450-square-foot children’s play area.
At the northern end of the 590,000-square-foot concourse will be a 40-foot-high atrium with an oculus bringing daylight into the three levels below.
Architectural design is being led by Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in partnership with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects and Arup. SOM partner Scott Duncan said: “From the skylit-tunnel connection to the orchard-inspired columns, the new concourse will offer bright, soaring spaces for passengers and enable world-class operations for airlines. We’re proud to be leading this bold new vision for O’Hare and to deliver such a complex project on budget for the City of Chicago.”
Concourse D is the first of two new satellite concourses to be developed as part of the $8.2 billion Terminal Area Plan. A second satellite, Concourse E, will provide 24 additional gates, while Terminal 2 will eventually be replaced by the new O’Hare Global Terminal. A new underground tunnel will also be constructed to link passengers, employees and baggage operations across the expanded facilities.
Work is already advancing across O’Hare. The ElevateT3 project, a $300 million investment, is modernising Terminal 3 for the first time since the 1980s. Terminal 5 has recently been expanded with a new 10-gate extension and a multi-storey parking facility. Dozens of runway and taxiway upgrades have also been completed to improve airfield safety and support future expansion.
The Johnson administration has highlighted that as of May 2025, minority and women-owned business participation across O’Hare 21 projects stands at 37 per cent. The Concourse D development and associated works are expected to generate more than 3,800 construction jobs.
Site preparation for Concourse D began in 2023, with temporary taxiways, a new grade-separated roadway and three temporary gates added to Concourse C to ensure smooth operations during construction. Major work began in mid-2025, including demolition of existing taxiways. Excavation will continue for six months, with vertical construction due to start in spring 2026.
The concourse is scheduled to open in late 2028. AECOM Hunt Clayco Bowa has been appointed as Construction Manager At-Risk for Concourse D and related works. Around $300 million of additional infrastructure projects are bundled into the scheme, including a new central cooling facility and utility upgrades to support Concourse E.
Mayor Johnson said the project will not only enhance facilities but also deliver benefits for Chicagoans. “This transformative investment is about more than modern terminals. It is about jobs, opportunity and ensuring O’Hare remains a driver of growth for our city and our region,” he said.

Gatwick’S Northern Runway Could Support £275M Boost To Sussex TourismPlans to bring London Gatwick’s Northern Runway into routine use could support an estimated 275 million GBP annual uplift for the Sussex visitor economy by 2038, according to new projections.
The increased capacity would help facilitate additional international travel into the region, aligning with ambitions to grow the local tourism sector.
If planning approval is granted later this year, the airport’s proposals would allow for an additional 1.6 million international inbound passengers annually by 2038. This forecasted growth forms part of the wider Sussex Visitor Economy Growth Strategy, which sets out targets to attract 500,000 more international tourists per year by 2034 and expand the value of the sector from 5 billion GBP to 7.5 billion.
Tourism currently accounts for 14% of total employment in Sussex, supporting over 74,000 jobs. While international visitors make up around 2% of overall visitor numbers, they contribute approximately 20% of total tourism-related spending, underlining the economic significance of long-haul travel.
The strategy identifies markets such as China, Southeast Asia and the Gulf as areas of potential growth. London Gatwick already operates 54 long-haul routes and is seeking to expand its offering to destinations including Shanghai, Singapore and Dubai. Improved connectivity to these markets is expected to play a role in attracting higher-spending, longer-staying visitors to Sussex.
If the development proceeds, the airport estimates it could accommodate an additional 60,000 flights annually, with passenger numbers rising to approximately 80.2 million by 2047.
The Northern Runway is about more than just increasing capacity. It’s about connecting the UK to the fastest-growing regions of the world and ensuring Sussex can share in the benefits of that global reach. By unlocking an additional 1.6m international inbound passengers a year by 2038, we’re not just meeting growing demand, we’re bringing new opportunities directly into our region with tourism being a catalyst of economic growth.
The Northern Runway scheme is a privately funded 2.2 billion GBP project. London Gatwick currently contributes 5.5 billion GBP and 76,000 jobs to the UK economy annually. If the plans move ahead, the project is expected to support a further 14,000 jobs and deliver 1 billion GBP in additional economic activity per year for the region.

Appleton International Airport Reports $2 Billion Of Economic ImpactAirport marks 60 years of service to Wisconsin
(Appleton, Wis.) Aug. 5, 2025— County leaders announced today the results of a study showing the Appleton International Airport has a total economic impact of nearly $2 billion on the region. The last economic impact study was conducted in 2015 when Appleton International Airport generated 676 million in total economic impact. Other comparative measures are:
“It is clear the airport is our most valuable economic engine,” said Outagamie County Executive Thomas Nelson. “Our growth has a multiplier effect on the region and supports our continued investment in the expansion of services and facilities. The airport provides nationwide access to businesses and consumers and that makes the Fox Cities a great place to live and do business.”
The report includes direct impacts from airport operations and visitor spending, indirect impacts as airport businesses make purchases to support their operations, and induced impacts as airport and tourism sector employees spend their wages in the local economy. The economic impact includes Outagamie, Brown, Winnebago, and Calumet counties. Since the 2015 study was conducted, the airport has reached significant milestones:
“Our continued success is due to innovative leadership on the governmental level and the dedication of our team members to service,” said Airport Director Abe Weber. “Our promise to our customers is to make air travel faster, easier, and more convenient and our promise to the community is to continue to provide economic opportunities and continued growth.”
When the airport opened in 1965, Air Wisconsin Airlines was offering flights between Appleton and Chicago. Now the airport offers service from Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, Sun Country Airlines, and United Airlines to 21 non-stop destinations
“Thanks to the continued investment of our airline partners, we have been able to expand our flights, destinations, and routes we offer consumers,” Weber said. “And to accommodate the growth in routes, we have expanded our facilities to host larger planes and increased passenger traffic.”
The airport recently opened a $66 million concourse expansion and is renovating the existing concourse and front drive lanes.
The economic impact study was released to mark the 60th anniversary of the airport opening in 1965. To celebrate the anniversary, the airport will be holding several promotions during August including a month-long giveaway. Travelers through the airport can scan a QR code to enter to win a variety of prizes which will be given away to six lucky people. The final grand prize is a $600 airfare voucher awarded to one winner at the end of August.

ACI EUROPE welcomes airport liquids rule change but calls for faster, unified EU certification of advanced security equipment.
ACI EUROPE has welcomed the European Union’s decision to lift the 100ml restriction on the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in cabin bags for flights departing from EU airports equipped with advanced screening technology. The move permits passengers to carry up to 2 litres of LAGs and comes after the technology was successfully recertified by the EU, having previously faced performance concerns.
This lifting of restrictions is expected to improve both passenger convenience and airport operational efficiency. Airports using the new technology can now process passengers more quickly at security checkpoints. The equipment also delivers enhanced automated detection capabilities, allowing security staff to focus on more complex tasks.
However, ACI EUROPE has strongly criticised the EU’s testing and certification process for aviation security equipment, highlighting structural flaws and calling for an urgent reform. The organisation stressed that while the recertification of new equipment is a welcome development, it was long overdue. The UK completed its recertification back in April, three months ahead of the EU.
ACI EUROPE noted that other manufacturers have also developed advanced screening technology, yet there is no clear timeline for their certification by the EU. As a result, airports that have invested in this newer equipment are still required to enforce the outdated 100ml rule, limiting their ability to enhance passenger experience and security performance.
Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, warned, “We now live in a very different world in which the convergence of geopolitics, cyber and physical security threats is plain to see. In that context, it is very clear that our decades old testing and certification regime for aviation security equipment is no longer fit for purpose. We just can’t keep relying on a system essentially based on a good will cooperation between EU states, where even aligned testing methodologies are not guaranteed, and validating test results takes forever. We absolutely need to be able to benefit from innovation in security technologies much faster. Beyond operational efficiencies, this is primarily and crucially about better protecting European citizens — and ultimately about the EU’s own strategic autonomy agenda.”
For the past two years, ACI EUROPE has called for a fully integrated EU testing and certification system aligned with the UK and US. The group’s proposals, submitted to the EU Aviation Security Committee last December and reiterated in spring, emphasise that only the European Commission can drive this change by assuming direct responsibility for the system.
Jankovec concluded, “This is both frustrating and worrying, as we are getting nowhere for now with our proposals. What we are asking for is nothing else than EU leadership and action on a highly sensitive issue, which should be a clear priority for the European Commission and Member States. Once again, it is about better securing our skies and protecting our societies.”

Edinburgh Airport Lifts 100Ml Liquids RuleEdinburgh Airport (EDI) has lifted its 100ml liquids rule following the installation of new security x-ray technology.
Passengers will now be permitted to leave liquids in their bags when passing through security, with new limits allowing up to two litres of liquid per person.
EDI is the first airport in Scotland to lift the rule, with the move coming after eight new Smiths Detection X-rays were installed as part of a 24 million GBP investment to transform security at the airport.
The new allowances also permit the carrying of large electrical items, such as laptops and tablets.
This is a big day for our passengers and the airport team – we are delighted to be able to lift this rule and really transform the whole security process, making it easier for everyone.
A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule to be the case, so it really is a momentous day as we become the first airport in Scotland to lift the rule since it was introduced in 2006.
The change allows more flexibility for passengers to take liquids through security, all while maintaining and improving our high safety levels through the use of 3D technology. But it is important that passengers continue to check with the situation at their return airport as not all airports will be moving away from 100ml just yet.

Edinburgh Airport Lifts 100Ml Liquids Rule After Major Security Upgrade With New Scanning TechnologyPosted: 23 July 2025 | Gabriel Higgins | No comments yet
Passengers at Edinburgh Airport can now carry liquids up to two litres without removing them at security checkpoints.
The 100ml liquids rule, in place since 2006, has officially been lifted at Edinburgh Airport (EDI) after the introduction of advanced x-ray security technology. Passengers can now leave liquids in their bags at security, with individual containers of up to two litres permitted.
This milestone makes Edinburgh Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, the first in Scotland to remove the restriction. The change follows the installation of eight new security X-rays as part of a £24 million investment to improve and streamline the passenger experience at Scotland’s busiest airport.
Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said:
“This is a big day for our passengers and the airport team – we are delighted to be able to lift this rule and really transform the whole security process, making it easier for everyone.
A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule to be the case, so it really is a momentous day as we become the first airport in Scotland to lift the rule since it was introduced in 2006.
The change allows more flexibility for passengers to take liquids through security, all while maintaining and improving our high safety levels through the use of 3D technology. But it is important that passengers continue to check with the situation at their return airport as not all airports will be moving away from 100ml just yet.”
As part of the upgrade, the airport has expanded to eight security lanes, using cutting-edge equipment. The new system allows both liquids and large electronics such as tablets and laptops to remain inside hand luggage during screening.
There is no longer a limit on the total volume of liquids a passenger may carry, provided each item does not exceed two litres.
However, the airport reminds travellers that this relaxation may not be reflected at their return airports, as rules vary across the UK and internationally. Passengers should always check requirements before flying.

MIA’s record-breaking growth in passengers, cargo, and construction cements its role as Florida’s top economic powerhouse.

Miami International Airport’s (MIA) economic impact has reached a record $181.4 billion in statewide business revenue and supports 842,703 jobs, reinforcing its role as one of Florida’s most powerful economic drivers. The figures, presented in MIA’s 2024 economic impact study by consulting firm Martin Associates, were unveiled at the World Trade Centre Miami’s annual State of the Ports luncheon.
Together, MIA and PortMiami now generate more than $242.8 billion in economic impact and support nearly 1.2 million jobs across Florida. These milestones were announced by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, MIA Director and CEO Ralph Cutié, and PortMiami Director and CEO Hydi Webb before an audience of over 500 local business and community leaders.
“That Miami-Dade County’s two economic engines together fuel nearly a quarter-trillion dollars in business revenue and sustain more than a million jobs across Florida is a testament to the extraordinary opportunities they create for our community, our region, and our nation,” said Mayor Levine Cava. “Congratulations to the MIA team for achieving yet another record-breaking milestone — and to both ports for continuing to power our local economy, support great jobs, and drive prosperity for all.”
In 2024, MIA generated $41.2 billion in business revenue and supported 311,291 jobs in Miami-Dade County alone, equivalent to one in four local jobs. Passenger traffic grew by 7% to nearly 56 million travellers, while cargo volumes rose by 9% to three million tons – both record highs.
Statewide, MIA maintained its status as the busiest US airport for international freight and ranked 5th globally. In 2023, MIA handled 90% of Florida’s air trade by value and 40% of the state’s combined air and sea trade. Florida-based air freight at MIA was worth $134.3 billion, supporting 531,412 jobs across the state.
MIA’s $9 billion Future-Ready Modernisation in Action Plan is reshaping the airport with projects like the Ibis Garage, opening December 2025, and the 300,000-square-foot Concourse K, due in 2029. The plan generated $252 million in business revenue and 2,865 local construction jobs in the past year.
The study also showed MIA’s key role in the cruise sector, with 766,662 passengers using the airport en route to cruises, mostly through PortMiami, which hosted a record 8.2 million passengers in 2024.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport To Reopen After £160M Funding Package AgreedDoncaster Sheffield Airport is set to welcome passengers again, after a £160m (US$216m) funding package was approved by South Yorkshire’s mayor, Oliver Coppard, and council leaders.
All five board members of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) voted unanimously in favor of the funding, paving the way for the airport’s reopening.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed in November 2022, leaving South Yorkshire one of the UK’s largest city regions without an international aviation presence.
Since its closure, the mayors of South Yorkshire and Doncaster, local authorities and central government have worked to return aviation to the region through a reopened airport with a viable future.
Coppard said, “We’re reopening DSA. Today, we’ve made a historic decision: to invest in the plans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and to create a sustainable aviation and advanced manufacturing hub at Gateway East.
“The plan we have backed today is about more than holiday flights or passenger numbers. It’s a long-term commitment to drive jobs, growth and opportunities in sustainable aviation, advanced manufacturing, freight and even the defense sector, here in South Yorkshire.”
Mayor of City of Doncaster Council, Ros Jones, added, “This project is not simply to reopen our airport for passenger flights; it’s about the wider economic impacts, creating a hub for aviation-related industry, delivering jobs and opportunities for our residents and putting Doncaster back on the map.”
According to SYMCA, significant passenger operations are not likely to commence until summer 2028, although there is potential for limited passenger activity and cargo from winter 2027.

MAG served 65 million passengers, expanded routes, and unveiled major investment plans to boost regional economies and sustainability across its airports.
MAG has reported a record year, serving 65 million passengers for the first time in its history for the year ending 31 March. The Group, which owns and operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands Airports, as well as travel services business CAVU, posted revenues of £1.3 billion, up 8.4% on the previous year. Adjusted EBITDA rose 12.5% to £570.4 million, while operating profit increased 9.8% to £263.2 million.
Growth was driven by new routes and increased frequencies from major airlines including easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2.com and TUI. Notably, India’s largest airline, IndiGo, began its first European service from Manchester to Mumbai during the period. CAVU, MAG’s digital travel services business, grew revenues nearly 14%, now operating at 308 airports in 48 countries.
MAG continued its major infrastructure investment, nearing completion of the 10-year Manchester Airport Transformation Programme later this year. The Group plans to invest a further £2.5 billion across its airports over the next five years, including £1.1 billion at London Stansted announced at the Government’s International Investment Summit in October.
MAG CEO Ken O’Toole said, “This year’s record performance is a testament to the strength of our business and the dedication of our people. With more passengers choosing our airports than ever before, MAG continues to play a vital role in connecting the UK to the world.” He added, “Our airports are engines of growth for the regions they serve. Through continued investment, we’re creating jobs, supporting local economies, and enabling trade and tourism across the North, South and Midlands.”
O’Toole also highlighted MAG’s commitment to sustainability: “Our new five-year Sustainability Strategy builds on two decades of progress and reinforces our commitment to reducing emissions, creating opportunities, and supporting the communities we serve.”
Customer experience remained strong with 98.9% of passengers passing through security in 15 minutes or less across all three airports.

Working together for a brighter future
As the Group continued to work towards its target of net zero carbon operations by 2038, its commitment to sustainability was once again independently recognised. In 2025, MAG was names a Financial Times European Climate Leader for the fifth time, as well as retaining its five-star GRESB rating. It also received a ‘gold standard’ award by EcoVadis, placing MAG in the top 5% of rated businesses.
Across the reporting period, MAG welcomed updates from UK Government about the use and domestic production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), including that the UK’s SAF Mandate, and the creation of a Revenue Certainty Mechanism (RCM) for domestic SAF. The creation of an RCM, which has now been passed into law, will assist the UK in realising the potential of a domestic SAF industry, which will ensure that the cost of flying remains accessible for passengers, while creating tens of thousands of green jobs in the UK.
In May, MAG launched its new five-year Sustainability Strategy ‘Creating a sustainable future for all’. The new Strategy builds on the more than two decades progress and focus that has placed sustainability at the core of how MAG operates. The Strategy has two main focus areas: Protecting our Environment and Community at our Core, with a number of targets in place, including reducing scope 1&2 market-based emissions by 48%, supporting 70,000 young people through education programmes, and donating £1.5m to local communities, all by 2030. Aena Commits To €351M Airport Investment. The funding is in addition to Aena’s current five-year investment plan (known as DORA II, Airport Regulation Document 2022–2026).
Key projects at airports such as Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Valencia, Bilbao, César Manrique-Lanzarote, Ibiza, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Menorca, Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna and Tenerife Sur will benefit from the additional cash injection.
One of the main allocations (€84m) will go towards the ongoing remodelling of the terminal area at Palma de Mallorca Airport, in order to shorten the timeline for work to complete.
Improvements to passenger service quality and security processes through the automation of screening using EDSCB (Explosive Detection System for Cabin Baggage) equipment, which allows liquids and electronic devices to remain inside hand luggage, and ATRS (Automatic Tray Return System), will require an additional €86m beyond what was planned under DORA II.
Cybersecurity investments will total €62m and €65 will go to digitalisation and automation of processes, with a further €7m for the implementation of remote-controlled boarding bridges.
AENA said that for the next investment period, DORA III (2027–2031), it is finalising its investment proposal for all Spanish airports, which it will put to consultation with the airlines, and which will represent “the largest wave of airport investment in recent decades”.
