Smiths Detection Expands Partnership With Fukuoka International Airport

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies and a business of Smiths Group, today announces it has expanded its partnership with Fukuoka International Airport Co., Ltd. Smiths Detection will supply seven HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model S X-ray scanners complete with seven automatic tray return systems, the iLane A20. The technology will be in use in the newly renovated international terminal.

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model S is a smaller footprint version of Smiths Detection’s industry-leading, Computed Tomography (CT) passenger checkpoint scanner. The Model S is 20cm narrower and 350kg lighter than the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX which means it can be easily integrated into new airport or critical infrastructure checkpoints. Both models produce high-resolution, rotatable 3D images that provide a more comprehensive assessment of baggage contents, resulting in lower false-alarm rates.

The iLane A20, a next-generation fully automated tray return system, delivers high throughput and efficiency, streamlining the screening process and eliminating passenger bottlenecks. Empty tray verification (ETV) will also be included to ensure all trays are devoid of any personal belongings, unauthorised objects, or restricted items before being returned to the tray return unit.

Smiths Detection’s technology will be installed by the end of March 2025. 77 units of Smiths Detection’s 3D X-ray scanners are already in use in Japan, as well as 156 iLane tray return systems. With the ability to scan over 300 passengers per hour, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX and iLane A20 will reduce security bottlenecks, streamline checkpoints, and minimise waiting times, ultimately improving throughput and overall satisfaction for both passengers and Fukuoka International Airport.
