Chinese automaker BYD has announced plans to deploy solid-state batteries in electric vehicles in a pilot phase starting in 2027. Primarily for cost and process stability reasons, the company will use sulfide-based electrolytes. The batteries will initially be limited to mid- to high-priced electric vehicles, before expansion to the mass market is planned from 2030.

BYD claims that the cost of sulfide-based solid-state batteries will be comparable to that of ternary liquid batteries when sufficient production volumes are achieved. Currently, costs are still high due to low production volumes. In the long term, however, BYD does not see a fundamental cost disadvantage for solid-state batteries.

BYD began researching solid-state batteries in 2013 and validated the technical feasibility in 2016 with small prototypes of less than one ampere-hour in capacity. By 2023, the company had developed industrial manufacturing processes and materials. Since 2024, BYD has been producing test cells with capacities of 20 and 60 ampere-hours. Despite this progress, BYD expects significant challenges in the first three years after commercialization, but believes widespread use is realistic after five years. In addition to solid-state batteries, the company claims that lithium iron phosphate batteries will continue to play an important role due to their cost efficiency.
