The German federal government and the state of Lower Saxony are jointly providing a funding of more than 60 million euros for the construction of a battery recycling plant by H.C. Starck Tungsten in Goslar. According to the subsidiary of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation, the investment required for the planned facility is approximately 340 million euros. Construction of the plant is scheduled to begin in 2027, with an intended processing capacity of 20,000 tons of black mass per year.

The company claims that a newly developed procedure will be used to process the black mass which is created during the mechanical shredding of used batteries after the casing has been removed. The procedure is based on six registered patents and is designed to be more efficient than existing processes. Of the more than 60 million euros in funding, 70 percent will be provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and 30 percent by the State of Lower Saxony. The funding as part of the EU Directive on the Resilience of Battery Cell Production is subject to further project approvals and the successful implementation of the planned process on an industrial scale.
