Oil & GasWestern LNG has awarded offshore contractor Allseas the installation contract for the critical subsea section of the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline, marking a major step forward for energy export infrastructure in northwest Canada.
The contract covers the final segment of a 700-kilometer (435-mile) pipeline system built to transport Canadian natural gas from interior production fields to the planned Ksi Lisims floating liquefied natural gas export facility on Pearse Island.
Located in remote waters near the Alaska border, Allseas’ scope involves laying approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) of concrete-weight-coated pipeline ranging between 36 and 48 inches in diameter.
The subsea line will serve as the vital link connecting the main onshore transmission network directly to the offshore export terminal, with the offshore installation scheduled to begin in 2029.
Allseas plans to deploy its specialized pipelay vessels, Solitaire and Sandpiper, to execute the installation across varied bathymetry.
Operations will extend from shoreline entry points down to water depths of nearly 450 meters (1,475 feet).
Project engineers face a demanding marine environment, combining nearshore engineering hurdles with a highly isolated geographical region.
Work parameters include managing multiple shore pull-ins, above-water tie-ins, pre- and post-lay span rectification, trenching, and seafloor route stabilization to secure the pipeline against strong coastal currents.
Western LNG selected Allseas due to the company's track record in managing complex subsea installations under harsh offshore conditions.
Allseas handles project execution using proprietary design, construction, and operational technology developed in-house.
Once operational, the completed pipeline system will unlock a major direct route to international Pacific markets for Canadian natural gas suppliers.
Project developers expect the line to expand foreign trade opportunities, strengthen long-term regional energy security, and spur economic development across British Columbia.
