The International Code Council (ICC) is pleased to announce the acquisition of the assets of Code Concepts Group LLC (Code Concepts), a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in fire and building code advisory services, training and technical consulting for emerging technologies, and plan review services. As part of the acquisition, industry veteran Michael O’Brian has joined ICC as Senior Vice President, where he will oversee and help expand the organization’s advisory services.

“Code Concepts has spent years solving some of the toughest fire and life safety questions in emerging areas such as energy storage and battery manufacturing,” said John Belcik, Chief Executive Officer, ICC. “This is exactly the kind of specialized expertise our members will benefit from as these technologies continue to scale quickly. Michael’s leadership makes that knowledge immediately useful to the people who need it.”

Code Concept’s work has been particularly notable in the emerging technologies sector, including energy storage, where growing deployment of battery energy storage systems has increased demand for specialized expertise in fire and life safety.

O’Brian brings more than 30 years of experience in the fire service, emergency management, code enforcement, and technical consulting fields. He previously served for more than eight years as Chair of ICC’s Fire Code Action Committee and helped guide the code development work that informed ICC’s Ad-Hoc Battery and Energy Storage Systems (AH-BES) Committee Report and related updates to the International Codes® (I-Codes®).
