RAK Ports in Ras al Khaimah has in recent weeks launched its new Saqr 2.0 deep water port development project, which will focus on the liquid bulk, project cargo and break bulk segments, while also developing facilities for shiprepair and recycling.
The aim is to have the first phase of the new port operational by 2027, providing direct access not only to waterside berths but to around 5million m2 of free zone space.
Currently RAK Ports operates around 60 berths, but this will increase to 72 berths in the first phase, with more development stages to follow. The water depth alongside these new berths will be 17-18m, allowing RAK Ports to cater for larger vessel types than it can currently. There are also plans to increase the size of the free zone from 5million m2 at present, to 14 million m2 in future.
