TotalEnergies has begun construction of a 1 GW solar project in southern Iraq, located in the Basra region. The solar park will be developed in four phases and according to the Iraqi government, the first phase is scheduled to come online by the end of 2025, delivering 250 MW of clean energy to the national grid. The project is expected to be fully commissioned by 2028.
The project forms part of a broader US$27bn agreement between the Iraqi government and TotalEnergies, which also includes initiatives in gas flaring reduction, seawater treatment, and enhanced oil recovery. TotalEnergies holds a 45% stake in the project, with Basrah Oil Company owning 30% and QatarEnergy the remaining 25%.
This project supports Iraq’s national goal of installing 12 GW of solar capacity by 2030.
