The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has approved a major refurbishment plan for road signages across its jurisdiction and decided to partner with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) for technical guidance on road maintenance.Â
NDMC Vice-Chairman Satish Upadhyay announced that the council had green-lighted various infrastructure proposals, including the road signage project.Â
The existing road signages, installed between 2009 and 2010, are outdated compared to the latest IRC norms issued in 2022.Â
Upadhyay explained that the new IRC 67:2022 standards now differentiate between urban and highway signages in terms of color, font, size, and reflective materials based on traffic speed and visibility needs.Â
There are currently 6,439 signages in the NDMC area, with an additional 80 needed. Replacing and updating all signages will cost approximately âč18.07 crore. A third party will be hired to oversee this project.
Additionally, the NDMC approved a Memorandum of Agreement with CRRI for road maintenance and rehabilitation, including visual condition surveys and road roughness measurements.Â
The road in North West Moti Bagh, last resurfaced in 2013, is in particularly poor condition. CRRI will provide recommendations for necessary treatments before estimates are prepared.
NDMC Member Kuljeet Singh Chahal highlighted that 39 roads, including Sudhir Tyagi Marg and Guru Gobind Singh Marg, will be reconstructed at a cost of about Rs 4.96 crore. NDMC staff will receive training in advanced road design and technology through an MoU with CRRI.
âThis work will be done at a cost of about Rs 4.96 crore. The roads which will be reconstructed include Sudhir Tyagi Marg, Road A block Palika Bhawan to Ringh Road, DCAC Road (Leela to DCAC) Sudhir Sabharwal Marg, Guru Gobind Singh Marg, Rajmata Singhia Marg, etc,â Chahal said.
The council also approved a project to enhance street lighting, which includes the supply, installation, and commissioning of 8,000 energy-efficient LED street lights integrated with a Command and Control Centre.Â
Additionally, discussions were held about redeveloping Shivaji Stadium in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, with the project outline presented to the council.
