The New York State Department of Transportation has unveiled a $60.8 million project to replace aging bridges along Interstate 490 in Monroe County, leading to long-term lane closures.

The project will replace the bridges carrying I-490 over the Erie Canal and Kreag Road in Perinton. Originally constructed in the 1950s, the three-span structures will undergo full reconstruction to improve safety and sustainability. The new design eliminates joints, bearings and piers, reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Enhancements include a new concrete median barrier, an upgraded drainage system and culvert repairs. To ease traffic congestion during extended lane closures, the state will implement a zipper merge system, encouraging drivers to use both lanes until the merge point before alternating entry into the open lane.

“Our residents in Monroe County need transportation infrastructure repairs for safer commutes,” said state Sen. Samra Brouk, in a statement. “This project will improve driving conditions and revitalize our upstate community.”

Construction will begin in April 2025, starting with eastbound crossings. The Bushnell’s Basin exit is already closed. During the 2025 season, I-490 will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Westbound bridge replacements are scheduled for 2026, with efforts to maintain two lanes in each direction.

The project is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
