$964 Million Road Maintenance Blitz Now Complete
Roads & Infrastructure
$964 Million Road Maintenance Blitz Now CompleteWorks have wrapped up on all major rehabilitation road projects backed by last year’s $964 million road maintenance blitz package across Victoria’s west. Some of regional Victoria’s busiest connections have been improved or upgraded, including the Midland, Sunraysia, Wimmera and Western highways as well as Beaufort-Lexton, Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne and Horsham-Kalkee. More than 1.5 kilometres of Midland Highway has been upgraded in Elaine near Woolshed Road as well as 800 metres of the Midland Highway in Blampied, near Blampied-Mollongghip Road. The Midland Highway links Ballarat and Geelong and serves as a key freight route for agricultural industries – while also connecting local commuters to jobs and services.   Related stories:   Various sections of the Western Highway were improved, with rehabilitation works now complete on 2.7 kilometres between Spring Hill Creek and Trawalla Road at Trawalla, one kilometre near Mallee Dam Road at Lawloit and 500 metres near Olinda Street at Beaufort. All up, about 70 per cent of the $964 million funding went to regional roads. Recently, the Victorian Government announced the Better Roads Blitz program that will aim to fix potholes and upgrade road surfaces across Victoria as part of the 2025/26 State Budget. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said the package has delivered smoother and safer journeys for motorists. “We’re delighted to reach this major milestone in the historic 2024/2025 road maintenance program, with roads across Western Victoria being improved to ensure our road freight and farming network can continue to move safely and efficiently,” she said.

Additional Investment Announced For $250M Curtis Road Project
Roads & Infrastructure
Additional Investment Announced For $250M Curtis Road ProjectThe South Australian Government will match the Federal Government’s $125 million investment to remove the Curtis Road level crossing in Munno Para, a key connection in Adelaide’s growing northern suburbs. The funding will be formally announced as part of the 2025/26 South Australian State Budget, which will be released next Thursday (June 5, 2025). The northern suburbs of Adelaide – which includes areas such as Munno Para, Angle Vale, Riverlea, Kudla, Concordia, and Roseworthy – are predicted to see significant population and economic growth over the next 30 years and beyond. It’s the fastest growing region in the state. The State Government recently undertook the Northern Adelaide Transport Study, which identified Curtis Road as an important east west link and access route to the North South Corridor. Currently, the Gawler Railway line crosses Curtis Road, 500 metres west of Main North Road. Approximately 21,000 vehicles pass through this level crossing each day, and during peak periods the boom gates can be down for up to 15 minutes every hour. The removal of the rail level crossing and grade separation will improve safety and travel time reliability by reducing road and rail network conflicts.   Related stories:   A planning study for the works will soon commence, with a concept design to be released in 2026. Major works will commence by 2027, with an expected completion in 2030. The 2025/26 State Budget for South Australia will also include $80 million in joint funding from the State and Federal governments (50:50) over five years for safety improvements on a section of Main South Road between Myponga and Yankalilla. Upgrades will include the construction of two new overtaking lanes, targeted curve easing and road widening, as well as widening narrow bridges and culverts. These improvements will increase overtaking opportunities and create a safer environment for all road users travelling to and from the Fleurieu Peninsula. Together, this now brings a total investment of $111.8 million to deliver five overtaking lanes and other safety upgrades on Main South Road between Myponga and Cape Jervis. Premier Peter Malinauskas said these works would help to increase the safety and efficiency of connections heavily relied upon by motorists. “The northern regions of Adelaide are projected to be our fastest growing in the next 30 years, accounting for 40 per cent of Greater Adelaide’s projected population growth,” he said. “Significant growth like this needs investment in infrastructure, particularly for important links like Curtis Road, which provides a vital connection between east and west and towards the North-South Corridor.”

Contract Awarded, Rollout Continues For $150M Road Safety PackageThe rollout of the Federal and South Australian government’s $150 million Adelaide Hills Productivity and Road Safety Package is continuing, with upgrades to be implemented throughout the Adeliade Hills, and a contract awarded for works on River Road. Works will also start soon to upgrade junctions along River Road as part of the Adelaide Hills Productivity and Road Safety Package, which includes a range of road improvements to support economic growth, improve road safety and increase fire resilience in the Adelaide Hills area, over five years. The package includes pavement works, road widening, easing of tight curves, shoulder sealing, audio tactile line marking, safety barrier installation, junction upgrades, and vegetation management on some of the region’s key strategic arterial roads. BMD has been awarded the construction contract for safety upgrades to junctions along River Road. The River Road Junction Improvements project includes widening the junction of River Road and Mount Barker Road to improve safety and allow trucks to turn left onto Mount Barker Road and right onto River Road, without encroaching on the opposing lanes. The project also includes targeted road resurfacing, upgrades to drainage and lighting and improved signage and line marking.   Related stories:   The intersection of Mawson Road, Battunga Road and Nottage Terrace, Meadows is being upgraded, with a new single-lane roundabout to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. On average, more than 10,000 vehicles and 550 heavy vehicles pass through this intersection each day. Works on the Onkaparinga Valley Road, Nairne Road, and Junction Road intersection upgrade, along with works for the intersection upgrade at Junction and Jones Road, Balhannah, will be underway from mid-2025. Along with the intersection and road upgrades, roadside tree trimming and preparation works are underway on Kangarilla Road at multiple locations between Clarendon and Kangarilla until mid-June 2025, ensuring clearer lines of sight and safer traffic conditions for road users. The upgrade of the junction of Strathalbyn Road with River Road will have a new right turn lane from Strathalbyn Road into River Road, road widening and targeted resurfacing, drainage and lighting upgrades, plus roadside protection and improved signage and line marking, as well as changes for pedestrian access to the Heysen Trail near the Strathalbyn Road and River Road junction. Minor improvements will be delivered at the junctions of River Road with Kangaroo Reef, Sawmill Gully and Fairview Roads including some road widening and improved signage and line marking. The River Road and Fairview Road junction will be realigned to improve sight lines. Main construction works are expected to commence in July and be completed in late 2025. The $150 million Adelaide Hills Productivity and Road Safety Package, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (80:20).

First Major Works Begin On $350M Geraldton Port Transformation
Roads & Infrastructure
First Major Works Begin On $350M Geraldton Port TransformationWorks on a new $52 million materials handling facility at Geraldton Port has signified the commencement of the first major works on the $350 million Geraldton Port Maximisation Project in Western Australia. The new facility will improve safety, increase efficiencies and reduce dust emissions. It will allow vessels to be loaded at increased speeds, delivering significant cost savings to the region’s exporters, as well as improve the port’s overall efficiency. It marks the first major activity on site as part of the State Government’s $350 million Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP), which will significantly expand capacity of Geraldton Port and facilitate the export of new commodities from the region. The next project in the PMaxP pipeline is the proposed Surge Protection Breakwater, which will address wave action restrictions that prevent ships entering and exiting the port which currently cost the port 30 lost productive days per year. The project is currently under assessment by the WA Environmental Protection Authority.   Related stories:   Ports Minister Stephen Dawson said he was thrilled to see the project get underway. “This new facility marks an important milestone in the Geraldton Port Maximisation Project and will improve safety, environmental and efficiency outcomes across the entire port,” he said. “Export tonnage through Geraldton will only continue to grow, with more grain, iron ore and minerals exports handled every year.”
