Temporary Closure of Runway 10-28 Scheduled to Begin July 22, 2026

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is moving forward with the full rehabilitation of its longest commercial runway this summer. Construction for this key infrastructure upgrade is set to begin on July 22 and will continue until October 8. To safely complete the rehabilitation project, Runway 10-28 will be temporarily closed during the work.

“With this major project, we are enhancing Maryland’s gateway and improving the heart of BWI Marshall Airport,” said Shannetta Griffin, Executive Director/CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA). “This runway rehabilitation project will help ensure the long-term safety, reliability and operational efficiency of the airport.”

MAA will work to minimize disruptions to airport operations or the customer experience during the closure of Runway 10-28. The construction will include milling and paving the runway, along with an upgrade of its electrical system to install modern LED runway lighting. Runway 10-28 is one of two commercial runways and the longest at the airport at 10,500 feet long. During the temporary closure of Runway 10-28, local residents may notice a change in airline flight patterns near BWI Marshall Airport.

Scheduled overnight closures of a second runway, Runway 15R-33L, will also occur during a portion of the construction project. These temporary overnight closures are necessary to accommodate paving work at the intersection of the airport’s two primary runways. Overnight closures of Runway 15R-33L are scheduled between August 4 and October 7. The planned closures were carefully coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration, commercial airlines, cargo carriers and other airport stakeholders. Outside of the scheduled overnight construction periods, Runway 15R-33L will remain fully operational.

The Maryland Board of Public Works approved a $83.8 million contract on March 18 for the runway rehabilitation project. Funding for the construction is provided by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant program and the Maryland Transportation Trust Fund. The runway project will be conducted by a joint venture of two contractors with extensive paving experience at BWI Marshall Airport, Allan Myers and P. Flanigan and Sons.
