airportNew interactive experience adds play, learning and regional storytelling to one of the terminal’s favourite gathering spaces
Fort McMurray, AB – The Fort McMurray Airport Authority (FMAA) is inviting the community and travellers to take a fresh look at one of the airport’s most beloved spaces. A newly refreshed Observation Area on Level 3 at Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) now features a striking new wall wrap celebrating the beauty and diversity of the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region, along with a brand-new interactive gaming experience designed for visitors of all ages.
Overlooking the airfield, the Observation Area has long offered one of the best views in the terminal to watch aircraft arrive and depart. The refreshed space now pairs those views with an engaging, motion-controlled game console that allows children and adults alike to learn, explore and play while spending time at the airport.
The interactive system offers a series of aviation inspired experiences. Visitors can spread their arms and take flight on a virtual journey over the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region, discovering local landmarks from above, explore fun facts about YMM and its campus, and learn more about the community the airport proudly serves. Guests can also step into the role of YMM’s maintenance team, helping keep the campus roads clear during winter operations, offering a playful glimpse into the work that keeps travellers moving safely to and from our region.
The game console can be played by one or two players and is designed to be intuitive, energetic and fun for kids and kids at heart.
“This space has long been a favourite gathering spot for families, aviation enthusiasts and visitors who come to watch the planes, often awaiting loved ones,” said Denean Robinson, President and CEO, FMAA. “With the new regional wall display and interactive gaming experience, we wanted to create something that celebrates where we live while also giving guests a fun and memorable way to connect with the airport. It is one more way we are enhancing the passenger experience and showcasing the pride we have in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo.”
The Observation Area is one of several beautiful spaces available within the terminal for full day or half day rentals. As part of the FMAA’s Community Investment Program, the airport does not charge a fee for non-profit organizations wishing to host meetings, gatherings, or events in the space.
The refreshed Observation Area is now open to the public on Level 3 of the terminal and is accessible to all airport visitors. Whether stopping by to watch aircraft take off and land, challenge a friend to a quick game, or host a community gathering, the Observation Area continues to offer a welcoming place to experience aviation up close at YMM. Those interested in booking the space can contact the airport team at info@flyymm.com.
