Miami International Airport (MIA) has unveiled plans for a major $1 billion expansion of Concourse D, marking a significant milestone within its wider $9 billion airport wide modernisation programme.

Announced by Miami Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, alongside Miami Dade County Commissioners and American Airlines Chief Executive Robert Isom, the Gate D60 expansion will deliver 17 new contact gates, upgraded passenger boarding areas, enhanced baggage handling systems and expanded dining and retail facilities by 2030.

Scheduled to break ground in 2027, the three level extension will transform the existing D60 area, which currently consists of one common boarding space and 17 ground level gates for smaller regional jets. Under the redevelopment, the space will be converted into 17 traditional contact gates capable of accommodating larger regional and narrow body aircraft. Each gate will feature a dedicated, spacious passenger hold room designed to improve comfort and operational efficiency.

All 17 gates will include third level connections to Concourse D’s US Customs and Border Protection facility, strengthening international arrival flows and supporting the airport’s position as a leading global gateway.

Mayor Levine Cava described the project as one of the most significant customer service enhancements within MIA’s broader transformation plan, which aims to improve the passenger journey from curb to cabin over the next five years. She noted that the North Terminal expansion, combined with the future Concourse K development in the South Terminal and the Central Terminal redevelopment, will create a future ready gateway capable of serving millions of passengers for decades.

American Airlines, for which Miami is a key hub and international gateway, highlighted the D60 expansion as a transformational investment that will elevate the customer and employee experience. The airline said the project complements its own investment in new premium lounges and expanded route networks.

Sustainability is also embedded within the design of the new extension. The facility is targeting LEED Silver certification from the US Green Building Council and Envision Verified status from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, reflecting a focus on resilient construction and environmental performance.

The Gate D60 expansion forms part of more than 200 projects under the MIA Plan. Recent and upcoming works include the opening of the Ibis Garage, modernisation of more than 600 elevators and escalators, refurbishment of 196 public restrooms, the new Concourse K expansion scheduled for 2029 and the $745 million Central Terminal redevelopment due for completion by 2031.

As America’s busiest airport for international freight and the second busiest for international passengers, Miami International Airport continues to invest at scale to reinforce its role as Florida’s primary global aviation gateway.
