factoryGeneral Motors Canada will invest $691 million in its St. Catharines propulsion plant to support the production of the sixth generation of its V‑8 engine, which will be used in full‑size trucks and SUVs sold in North America. The investment aims to enhance performance through updates in combustion and thermal management.
The St. Catharines facility will continue producing the current fifth-generation V‑8 engine while preparing for the next generation. This plant will join GM's Tonawanda, New York, and Flint, Michigan facilities in producing the new engines. The funding will cover new machinery, equipment, tooling, and renovations at the site.
This investment underscores GM's commitment to Canadian manufacturing and its strategic focus on enhancing engine technology for its popular vehicle lineup.
General Motors Canada will invest $691 million in its St. Catharines propulsion plant to support production of the sixth generation of GM’s V‑8 engine, the company announced. The engines will be used in full‑size GM trucks and SUVs sold in North America.
GM said equipment for the project has begun arriving at the Ontario facility. The plant will continue producing the current fifth‑generation V‑8 engine while preparing for next‑generation production.
With the investment, St. Catharines will become the third GM propulsion facility producing the new generation of V‑8 engines, alongside plants in Tonawanda, New York and Flint, Michigan.
According to GM Canada, the next‑generation V‑8 engine is expected to deliver improved performance, with updates related to combustion and thermal management. The investment will fund new machinery, equipment, tooling and facility renovations at the St. Catharines site.
In a statement included in the release, GM Canada president and managing director Jack Uppal said the announcement confirms St. Catharines’ role in one of GM’s core vehicle programs.
The St. Catharines investment follows other recent GM manufacturing commitments in Canada. GM has previously announced a $343 million investment at its Oshawa Assembly plant to support production of the next generation of gas‑powered full‑size pickup trucks and says it has invested approximately $3.3 billion in Canadian manufacturing and operations since 2020.
GM Canada also said the St. Catharines plant has received $828 million in investments since 2020, while Oshawa Assembly has received approximately $1.5 billion over the same period. The company said it continues to assess future options for its CAMI Assembly facility in Ontario.
