The New South Wales Government has approved the Constellation critical minerals and high-tech metals project, helping secure the state as a “leading destination” for future investment.
The Constellation project, owned by Aeris Resources, is also set to boost copper supply to support NSW’s renewable energy transition.
Located near existing operations at the Tritton copper mine in the state’s west, the mine will provide a new source of high-quality ore and will support the long-term sustainability of Tritton’s operations.
Development includes an open-cut pit and underground mine with expected average production of 500,000 tonnes of copper every year – with production in NSW “surging” thanks to a near-30 per cent increase over the past three years.
Last year about 190,000 tonnes of copper was produced, with production needing to double to help fulfil global demand. This, the Minns government said, is why they are supporting over 20 projects state-wide.
“Copper will play a critical role in the global renewable energy transition. In 2024, around 30 per cent of copper demand was for new energy technologies and electrification, and by 2030 this could be around 35 per cent,” NSW Natural Resources Minister Courtney Houssos said.
“With world-class geology, innovative technology, and a clear regulatory system, NSW is well positioned to attract continued investment in critical minerals exploration and production,” Houssos said.
Construction of the mine is expected to begin soon, with operations scheduled to begin before the end of the year. It is understood 125 jobs will be created during construction and 255 jobs during peak operations.
Mine life is anticipated at 16 years and will contribute around $40 million in royalties to local communities during that time.
