Construction of Bougouni is near completion, and the project achieved first lithium spodumene concentrate product in February 2025. The project is owned and operated by Kodal Mining (UK) Ltd (KMUK) in which Kodal has a 49% interest.

“I am pleased to confirm that the ramp-up and optimisation of the project and DMS processing plant is progressing and, positively, we are seeing ongoing improvements through the modifications and adjustments to the DMS processing plant as advancements continues.
“The team has created a considerable stockpile of spodumene concentrate ready for transport and sale, equivalent to the first month of expected production. We are continuing to increase the stockpile, which provides confidence in the ability of the operation to meet the proposed production schedule of 11 000 t of concentrate per month.
“Additionally, the company continues to assist KMUK in its work with the Mali Government for the transfer of the mining licence to KMUK’s local subsidiary, LMLB. The update of LMLB’s company structure to include the Mali Government’s shareholding has been completed and all necessary compliance has been approved by the Ministers of Mining and Finance. We look forward to receiving sign off from the President of Mali shortly, marking the successful completion of the transfer.”

The Evolving Landscape Of Sustainable MiningIn the pursuit of sustainability, the mining industry is increasingly turning towards innovative solutions to reduce its environmental footprint. One such solution involves in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems, which are widely regarded as more sustainable and efficient alternatives to traditional diesel truck haulage.
However, as the mining sector continues its journey toward decarbonisation, the emergence of battery-electric haul trucks (BEHTs) as a viable alternative to diesel-powered trucks introduces new considerations. BEHTs promise to reduce emissions and align with broader sustainability goals, yet questions persist regarding their scalability, operational efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in large-scale mining operations. This is especially true when compared to IPCC systems, as the industry awaits commercially available BEHTs (greater than 140 t).
There are intricate trade-offs involved; while both offer potential, each presents distinct challenges and benefits, largely influenced by site-specific factors and long-term objectives.
IPCC: A proven solution with room for improvement
IPCC systems have been in operation for years, with several mining companies adopting them to reduce their reliance on trucks and improve efficiency. The central benefit of IPCC is its ability to move material by conveyors, which is more energy efficient. By eliminating the need for trucks, these systems significantly cut down on fuel use and emissions. Additionally, for some sites, IPCC offers improvements in mine closure by creating better landforms for waste material, thus reducing the need for costly dozing activities during mine decommissioning.
A significant advantage of IPCC systems is their ability to provide continuous material transport, unlike the cyclical nature of truck haulage. Trucks, even those powered by batteries, require time to load, haul, and unload, often creating bottlenecks and inefficiencies. Conveyors, on the other hand, ensure steady, uninterrupted material flow from the pit to the processing plant or waste dump. This continuous flow improves material handling operating time, making IPCC a more efficient solution in terms of both time and resources.
However, the technology is not without its challenges. IPCC solutions require considerable capital investment. Given the complexities of the required infrastructure, the upfront costs can make it a challenging decision for many to commit initially. While these systems are capable of delivering long-term operational savings and sustainability benefits, their initial infrastructure demands – including mobile crushers, conveyors, and other equipment – can be prohibitive for some projects.
Moreover, the extent to which IPCC can be fully ‘truckless’ depends on the specific mine site. A fully mobile IPCC system, which would eliminate trucks entirely, may not be feasible for all operations. In many cases, hybrid solutions, which combine IPCC with a smaller truck fleet, may offer the best balance between sustainability and operational flexibility. It really is a case of understanding each site and thinking outside of the typical truck shovel operation.

Mining’s future is electric
The shift towards cleaner propulsion is just one part of a larger movement toward digitalisation and automation in the mining industry. The future is poised to accommodate fully electric, autonomous mines where machines, trucks, and humans can communicate seamlessly to optimise operations. This vision of an all-electric mine is achievable with continued innovation and investment in new technologies, but stems from the appropriate utilisation of the technology available today.
Autonomous haul trucks powered by electricity will be able to work around the clock, without fatigue, improving operational efficiency and safety by keeping human intervention to a minimum. The use of data analytics and AI will allow for predictive maintenance, ensuring that equipment operates at peak efficiency, whilst simultaneously reducing unplanned downtime.
Reducing carbon emissions in mining extends far beyond the trucks on the surface; it encompasses the entire operation, from underground equipment to power distribution and energy management systems. Almost half (45%) of mining companies surveyed said they are taking an incremental, step-by-step approach to decarbonisation, focusing on individual assets and processes. Regardless of approach, the industry’s focus on electrification must be holistic, ensuring that the entire mining ecosystem benefits from the transition to electric technologies. Whether optimising energy use or improving the performance of machinery, electrification is the key to driving sustainable mining operations.
Through these technological innovations, mining companies will be able to meet the increasing global demand for minerals while reducing their environmental impact. Queensland Committed To Streamlining Mining ApprovalsThe newly formed Queensland Resources Cabinet Committee has met with key stakeholders to discuss ways to increase efficiency across the state’s resources sector.
One of the Queensland Government’s 100-day plan commitments following the recent state election was to establish the Resources Cabinet Committee (RCC).
The RCC – which is chaired by Queensland Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last – is considering policies and initiatives to maintain and improve the competitiveness of Queensland’s resources sector and the value of its supply chain.
In working towards this objective, the RCC has met with representatives from the Queensland Resources Council, Coal Australia, Australian Energy Producers, and the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies.
Each industry body representative put forward targeted proposals that aim to reduce mining project delays and streamline the approvals process – both of which are key priorities of the RCC.
Reflecting on the discussion meeting, Last said industry leaders want better certainty and decision-making across the Queensland resources sector, as well as greater opportunities for regional growth.
“The (Queensland) Government backs our mining and gas industries and the thousands of families across regional Queensland whose livelihoods depend on a strong resources sector,” Last said.
“We are committed to working in consultation and collaboratively with key industry stakeholders to find improvements to the mining approvals system and ensuring projects aren’t left to languish for years without a decision.
“The Resources Cabinet Committee is getting on with the job, delivering a system that is efficient, transparent and pro-investment. This will ensure resource project proponents can invest with confidence to create jobs and support regional economies.”
Peak industry bodies recently welcomed the Queensland Government’s decision to withdraw the mining lease objections review in favour of moving it under the RCC’s responsibilities, reducing potential regulation duplication and further approval delays.

Epiroc Wins Large Mining Equipment Order In IndiaHindustan Zinc Limited, a Vedanta Group company, is the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and the world’s third largest silver producer. The company has ordered a fleet of mine trucks as well as rigs for face drilling and production drilling. The equipment will be used at Hindustan Zinc’s technologically advanced operations across the state of Rajasthan in northwestern India, namely Rampura Agucha, Sindesar Khurd, Zawar, Kayad, and Rajpura Dariba.
The equipment order is valued at about MSEK280 and was booked in the 1Q25. In addition, the equipment is backed up by a full service and maintenance contract for a period of six to eight years.
Helena Hedblom, Epiroc’s President and CEO, says:
“We are proud to partner with Hindustan Zinc as they have very stringent standards for partners and safety parameters."
Arunkumar Govindarajan, President for Epiroc India, adds:
“Epiroc’s partnership with Hindustan Zinc in India goes a long way and with this new order it deepens the collaboration even further, fuelled by innovation from both sides. We thank Hindustan Zinc for the trust shown in Epiroc. Half of the machines in this order will be delivered from Epiroc’s manufacturing facility in Nashik, supporting the country’s ‘Make in India’ efforts.”
The ordered equipment includes the Minetruck MT42 S and Minetruck MT65 S, Simba E70 S production drilling rig, and the Boomer M2D face drilling rig. Machine features include Epiroc’s Rig Control System, RCS, which makes them ready for automation and remote control. Deliveries will start in 3Q25 and will continue into the end of 2025.

Evolution Mining Approves $273M Cowal Expansion Project In AustraliaEvolution Mining’s board has approved an A$430m ($273.15m) investment to expand its Cowal Gold Operations in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
The Cowal Open Pit Continuation (OPC) project will add an estimated two million ounces (moz) of gold production and extend the mine’s life by ten years to 2042.
The decision follows approval last year from the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure and the Federal Government earlier this year.
The OPC project includes continued mining at the existing E42 pit and the development of three new satellite pits – E46, GR and E41 – to the north and south of E42.
Evolution Mining managing director and CEO Lawrie Conway said: “Today, the Board has approved the project, which has compelling returns of 71% at current spot gold price and a short payback period. It will contribute to the goal of sustaining Cowal’s current production rate, while at the same time delivering significant economic benefits for all stakeholders.
“The project represents a major milestone for Cowal, unlocking the potential for further sustained growth, enhanced shareholder returns, and the opportunity to leave a lasting positive impact for our stakeholders and the communities in which we operate.”
Evolution Mining said that exploration efforts are ongoing, targeting further mineralisation that could support underground mining.
The expansion of open-pit operations will enable access to high-grade ore underground, supporting plans to increase underground output to 2.4 million tonnes by fiscal year 2026 (FY26).
At that point, underground production is expected to account for around 30% of total mine feed and 50% of gold output.
Since its acquisition by Evolution Mining in 2015, the Cowal operation has generated more than A$1.62bn in net mine cash flow, including A$479m in the first nine months of FY25.

Newmont Deploys Ericsson Private 5G At Australia’S Cadia Mine For Smarter MiningGold miner Newmont has implemented Ericsson Private 5G at its Cadia gold-copper mine in Australia, marking the first use of private 5G technology for teleremote dozing as a part of the mine’s surface operations.
The Cadia mine is said to be Australia’s largest underground mine and a Tier 1 asset.
With the integration of Ericsson Private 5G, Newmont can connect its entire dozer fleet across a 2.5km span from a single 5G radio base, achieving uplink throughput of up to 175 megabits per second.
This has enhanced machine productivity and ensured zero interruptions from communication instability, significantly boosting safe production levels.
Prior to this advancement, Newmont faced challenges with Wi-Fi, limiting connectivity to no more than two machines within a 100m range.
Wi-Fi’s instability often resulted in significant downtime, sometimes halving a 12-hour shift’s productivity due to troubleshooting and attempts to restore connectivity.
Newmont process control, networks and operational cellular director Chris Twaddle said: “Ericsson’s Private 5G network gives us a scalable and high-performing solution that provides the coverage needed and keeps our people safe. It is also enabling our long-term digital transformation vision to use 5G for smart mining at our Tier One surface and underground mines globally.”
Newmont deployed Ericsson’s 5G Antenna Integrated Radio and Massive Multiple Input/Multiple Output (MIMO) technology, which enables the high levels of uplink connectivity required for tele-remote dozing.
The MIMO technology utilises the mid-band spectrum to extend uplink throughput distances beyond traditional radio technologies, effectively increasing network capacity.
Additionally, the Ericsson Uplink Booster, a feature of Ericsson Silicon microprocessors in the radios, amplifies the uplink signal strength tenfold, further enhancing performance capabilities.
Ericsson Enterprise Wireless Solutions Enterprise 5G head Manish Tiwari said: “The deployment with Newmont at Cadia demonstrates the power of 5G for industry, where Ericsson’s industry-leading radio portfolio can reduce the amount of infrastructure that needs to be deployed and operated to cover an industrial site or area.
“This also allows enterprises to use private 5G networks they own to achieve high levels of performance for advanced video-based control and computer vision initiatives without large amounts of spectrum. This is especially valuable to organisations that are operating in spectrum-constrained markets.”

Bhp To Spend Billions On Copper Expansion In ChileBHP has revealed plans to invest $US13 billion ($20.5 billion) over the next decade to grow its copper operations in Chile.
The Big Australian currently operates three copper mines in Chile: Spence, Cerro Colorado and Escondida, the latter of which is known as the largest copper producer globally.
BHP’s copper operations in Chile represents 27 per cent of the country’s copper production, injecting $US9.4 billion ($14.8 billion) into Chile’s gross domestic product via royalties and taxes in 2024.
Speaking at the 2025 CRU World Copper Conference, BHP Escondida president Alejandro Tapia said Chile must act with urgency if it wants to execute growth copper projects to meet growing copper demand, which BHP expects to increase by 70 per cent by 2050.
“The competition will be tough abroad, and Chile cannot miss the opportunity or its leadership position,” Tapia said.
“If companies meet the necessary requirements and high environmental standards, an investment project should not take an excessive amount of time to conduct.”
Key growth copper projects for BHP includes:

Auric Mining Starts Site Preparation For Munda Gold Mine’S Starter PitAuric Mining has initiated the development of the Munda gold mine, located 5km from Widgiemooltha in Western Australia (WA), with the mobilisation of plant and equipment for the mine’s starter pit.
Mining at the starter pit is set to commence this week, with completion expected to take around six months.

The WA Government’s Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has approved the Munda starter pit mining proposal and mine closure plan.
Site preparation activities are currently under way, including the survey mark-out of the pit crest, haul roads, waste dump, run-of-mine pads and site office.
Auric has also secured a contract with MHM Contracting for the dry hire of the mining fleet, which will be operated by Auric’s own personnel.
The starter pit represents the initial phase of Auric’s strategy to exploit the larger Munda Resources.
Following the completion of the starter pit and a thorough analysis of the results, Auric plans to undertake pit optimisation and mine planning for an expanded pit at Munda.
Based on the outcomes from the starter pit and subsequent planning, the company intends to mine a larger pit by mid to late 2026.
Auric Mining managing director Mark English said: “We are right on schedule and have mobilised all the necessary machinery and infrastructure. Earth works have commenced; we will begin mining in a few days.
“The project is another significant step, both in our ambition to become a substantial gold producer in the district, and to develop Munda to its full potential.”
A comprehensive grade control programme has been completed over the starter pit area by Kalgoorlie-based Total Drilling Services.
The programme involved 428 holes drilled for a total of 14,670m. The results have enabled mine geologists to delineate near-surface ore blocks ahead of the mining operations.
As mining progresses and exposes new benches, further grade control drilling will be conducted on a 5m x 5m pattern.
Auric Mining plans to extract 125,000 tonnes (t) of ore at a projected grade of 1.8 grams per tonne of gold and an all-in sustaining cost of A$2,635 ($1,656) per ounce.

Sun Africa Seeks Energy, Mining Cooperation With EgyptAs part of efforts to enhance cooperation between Egypt and the US in the Energy Sector, Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, met with Adam Cortese, CEO of Sun Africa, and his accompanying delegation. The meeting discussed the potential collaboration in the domains of oil and natural gas, renewable energy, carbon reduction, and mining activities.
During the meeting, both sides explored opportunities for joint projects in renewable energy and smart energy solutions based on smart infrastructure, with a particular focus on solar power, green energy, and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
The two sides asserted on the importance of technology exchange and building long-term strategic partnerships that ensure knowledge transfer and support sustainable investment.
Cortese appreciated the Egyptian market as a strategic energy hub in Africa. He highlighted the strong support Sun Africa receives from the US government for global infrastructure and investment initiatives.

Creating A ‘Generational’ Gold-Copper Mining ComplexGreatland Gold is set to expand its investor reach and capital markets with its move to cross-list on the ASX.
The cross-listing follows Greatland’s acquisition of Newmont’s Telfer mine and a 70 per cent stake in the Havieron project late last year.
“We are delighted to have formally begun the process today for our listing on the ASX,” Greatland Gold managing director, Shaun Day said.
“The acquisition of Telfer and Havieron, completed in December 2024, immediately transformed Greatland Gold into a leading Australian gold and copper producer. Greatland has also announced its plans for a corporate reorganisation to be implemented through a UK scheme of arrangement. This would see Greatland Gold sit under new Australian parent company, Greatland Resources.
The move, subject to the approval from the UK Court and company investors, is projected to decrease costs and complexity and allow the company to pursue new investment and acquisition opportunities to support longer-term growth.
The Australian gold-copper producer continues to focus on renewing and developing an integrated Telfer–Havieron mining and processing operation, with the hope of developing a “generational” gold-copper mining complex.
Following approvals, Greatland Resources is hoping to list on the ASX on June 23.

Piedmont Lithium, Sayona Mining To Name Merged Lithium Business Elevra LithiumNorth American lithium products supplier Piedmont Lithium and Sayona Mining, an Australian mining company, have provided an update on their proposed merger.
The merger will combine the two companies to establish a lithium business named Elevra Lithium.

Sayona will become the parent entity of the combined lithium business, under the terms of the merger deal announced in November 2024.
The merger is on track to be finalised by mid-2025, pending shareholder and regulatory approvals.
The boards of both Piedmont and Sayona have selected their nominees for the Board of Directors of the new entity.
The board will comprise an equal number of nominees from each company, including Piedmont’s chair designate and Sayona’s current managing director and CEO.
Paul Crawford and Philip Lucas of Sayona, alongside Michael Bless and Claude Demby of Piedmont, will retire from their director roles upon the transaction’s closure. They will not be part of Elevra Lithium’s Board of Directors.
Keith Phillips, the current CEO and director of Piedmont, will transition to a strategic advisor role at Elevra Lithium following the merger.

Zimbabwe Mining Development Seeks To Protect Assets From International Debt DisputeZimbabwe’s state-owned Zimbabwe Mining Development (ZMDC) is seeking a resolution to protect its assets, which are at risk of being seized over a debt incurred from an international arbitration case with Amaplat Mauritius, reported Bloomberg.
ZMDC chairman Paul Chimboza has confirmed the authenticity of a letter addressed to Mines Minister Winston Chitando, requesting government intervention in the dispute linked to cancelled nickel and platinum projects.
The letter, verified by Bloomberg, highlights the corporation’s repeated requests for the state to assume the $93m debt owed to Amaplat’s unit.
The arbitration case was ruled in favour of Amaplat by the International Chamber of Commerce in 2014, with Zambia’s High Court allowing the enforcement of the ruling in 2019.
A settlement proposal was accepted by Zimbabwe’s Finance Ministry in 2021, with ZMDC agreeing to make the payments, which had escalated to $65.9m.
As part of the settlement, Bravura, owned by Nigerian businessman Benedict Peters, was to pay $15m to Amaplat.
However, according to Chimboza, Bravura has only paid $3m, and the remaining terms, including the transfer of mining assets, have not been fulfilled. Bravura officials have not commented on the matter.
ZMDC’s financial woes are compounded by the fact that most of its assets have been transferred to Defold Mine, a new state company, leaving it with limited internal resources to address the debt.
The financial strain on ZMDC is exacerbated by legal costs, which have exceeded $500,000.
Amaplat insists that the responsibility for the debt lies with the Zimbabwean Government.
Amaplat in a response to queries said: “As the ICC award is against a Zimbabwe government parastatal and the commissioner of a government ministry, the ZMDC and the Chief Mining Commissioner of the Ministry Mines, the public debt remains the responsibility of the government of Zimbabwe for the full amount.”
Further legal complications loom for Zimbabwe, with Amaplat planning to register its award in Canada following a similar action in the US. A related hearing is scheduled for 30 June.
Zimbabwe is facing significant financial challenges, with state entities owing more than $21bn and being excluded from international capital markets due to defaults on loans from institutions such as the World Bank and European Investment Bank.
Last year, Zimbabwe announced plans to secure a 26% free-carry stake in all new mining projects in the country.mining

Reko Diq ‘Breaking Down Barriers’ In Pakistan’S Mining Industry, Says Project ManagerThe Reko Diq gold and copper mine in Pakistan has reached levels of progress as yet unseen in the project’s decades long history.

Following this breakthrough, Reko Diq project manager Tim Cribb spoke to Mining Technology from the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum (PMIF) about the next steps for the mine.
“The good thing about the project is that we have buy-in at the federal as well as the provincial level. Now that the feasibility study is complete, we have a pathway forward and can focus on the delivery of the construction and mobilising people,” he said.
Currently, the mine is jointly owned by Canadian miner Barrick Gold (50%), the Pakistan Government (25%) and the Government of Balochistan (25%).
Saudi Arabian mining fund Manara Minerals is also set to purchase a 10–20% stake valued at between $500m (SR1.88bn) and $1bn from the Pakistan Government.
The phase one approval for Reko Diq is contingent on limited recourse project financing of $3bn (C$4.26bn). If this is secured, works can commence in 2025 in line with the target for first production by the end of 2028.
In addition, the World Bank’s private investment arm, the International Finance Corporation, is providing $300m in debt financing for the mine.
According to the latest feasibility study, Reko Diq is estimated to contain 15 million tonnes of proven and probable copper reserves, as well as 26 million ounces of gold. The project will comprise two open-pit mines and a processing plant, operating over an estimated 37-year life of mine.
The mill is expected to process 45 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of ore from 2028, expanding to 90mtpa in phase two, planned from 2034.
Cribb confirmed that recent progress has been exciting, but there is still much work to be done before Reko Diq can deliver on its full potential.
A range of mining services and equipment providers have secured contracts for work on Reko Diq. On 3 April, a deal was announced with mining services company Capital for early civil works and the construction and maintenance of a tailings storage facility.
Following this, during the PMIF, Fluor Corporation was announced as the lead engineering, procurement and construction management partner.
“A lot of construction work occurs internationally, off site, as the equipment is manufactured,” explained Cribb. “In 2026, much of that equipment will start arriving at site – so preparations for large transport and logistics work is ongoing,” he added.
Other processing and mining equipment providers to the project include industry heavyweights such as Metso, Weir, Komatsu and Caterpillar.
“You always need to bring in international expertise when you start off in new regions,” said Cribb. “Large-scale mining equipment is not available in the local market, so part of the challenge has been bringing key suppliers into Pakistan.”
As for the integration of technological advancement such as automation and AI into the mine once it is operational, Cribb has a balanced outlook as project manager.
“There is obviously risk in big projects,” Cribb said. “We want to minimise that by ensuring that everything we do is tried and tested before building them into Reko Diq, but we also want to leave opportunities open for automation or battery technology and the like.
“We have kept that as the thesis for the work to realise efficiency and cost-benefits,” he added.
As demand for critical minerals skyrockets, global attention is increasingly turning towards Pakistan’s relatively untapped reserves of 92 total discovered minerals.
Critical minerals were reportedly a key topic of discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in a meeting on 7 April.
The Reko Diq project has a significant role to play in this upward trajectory, being situated in the world-renowned Tethyan copper belt near Pakistan’s borders with Iran and Afghanistan.
Cribb confirmed that despite the instabilities of the region, the site itself is “relatively peaceful”.
Barrick Gold has established social development and training programmes for the local community and employees, with the aim of building a domestic workforce of 4,000 long-term workers that are skilled in operating mining equipment. The project workforce could peak at 7,500 during construction.
The project is also expected to produce $74bn in free cash flow over the next 37 years, according to Barrick Gold CEO Mark Bristow.
Barrick Gold’s commitment to Reko Diq’s potential is such that chairman John Thornton cited the project in a proposal to rebrand the company to Barrick Mining to reflect its push into copper operations.
Cribb told Mining Technology that the scale of Reko Diq will “break down barriers in Pakistan’s mining supply chain, especially for future exploration and deposits”.

Saudi Mining Giant Ma’Aden Eyes Rare Earths PartnershipSaudi Arabian mining company Ma’aden is in the process of selecting an international company to establish a rare earths processing partnership, aiming to position the kingdom as a critical minerals hub, reported Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the matter.
The company is evaluating potential collaborations with MP Materials from the US, China’s Shenghe Resources, Australia’s Lynas Rare Earths or Canada’s Neo Performance Materials.
Ma’aden plans to finalise its decision by the end of June. The companies will develop plans for both a rare earths processing facility and a subsequent magnet production facility within Saudi Arabia.
The chosen partner will collaborate with Ma’aden to study the most effective methods for mining and processing the kingdom’s abundant mineral reserves. The study is expected to be completed by December.
Saudi officials nearly doubled the estimated value of the kingdom’s mineral reserves to $2.5trn (SR9.38trn) last year, mainly due to the inclusion of rare earth elements.
While Ma’aden and MP Materials have refrained from commenting, Lynas has acknowledged its ongoing discussions with emerging rare earths companies globally.
Among the contenders, Shenghe and Neo have experience in rare earths processing and magnet production.
The refinement of rare earths, a group of 17 chemically similar metals, is a complex and environmentally challenging process. The search for more efficient methods is ongoing, given the intricate separation required for these metals.
China’s dominance in the rare earths refining industry, controlling nearly 90% of the global capacity, underscores the strategic importance of Saudi Arabia’s move.
Saudi Arabia’s focus on mining aligns with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy beyond its traditional reliance on oil.
The country is ramping up its presence in the global minerals supply chain through major investments and strategic partnerships.
Under its National Investment Strategy, it plans to invest $9.32bn in smelting projects with India’s Vedanta and China’s Zijin.
The kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund backs US-based electric vehicle maker Lucid, which opened a Saudi plant in 2023.
The country has also signed memorandums of understanding with Hastings Technology Metals and Critical Metals for rare earth and lithium projects.

Frost & Sullivan has estimated that process industries utilise less than 5% of the data that is collected, which means that 95% of the data is either siloed (used selectively), dark (unused), or lacking consistency in use. Problems in terms of assigning context to data and poor quality have also been identified. To be ready for digital transformation, the impediments to data utilisation must be addressed.

Digital transformation empowers mining operators to integrate data, processes, and systems into a unified framework, delivering actionable insights for decision-making. Tools such as real-time data analytics and process simulation enable operators to optimise workflows, reduce downtime, and adapt quickly to changing market demands.
Digitally transforming operations typically deploy centralised platforms, which enable integration across multiple facilities by unifying data with disparate formats and protocols into valuable, actionable information (see Figure 2). These highly scalable platforms feature open architecture and can operate on-premise or in the cloud. They enable high availability of information to users across the enterprise.mining

Kodal Minerals Provides Mining Licence Transfer And Project UpdateConstruction of Bougouni is near completion, and the project achieved first lithium spodumene concentrate product in February 2025. The project is owned and operated by Kodal Mining (UK) Ltd (KMUK) in which Kodal has a 49% interest.

Bauma: Sumitomo And Abb Ink Mou On Mining Equipment DecarbonisationABB has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the construction and mining systems business unit of Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation to collaborate on net-zero emissions solutions for mining equipment.

As part of the collaboration, teams from ABB and Sumitomo will work together to bring a vision of their complementary systems for decarbonising mining to the concept stage. The aim is to support energy delivery to mobile electric assets, as well as the required infrastructure of dynamic and static energy transfer.
The next steps involve completing a feasibility assessment and review. ABB and Sumitomo will also collaborate to develop business models and methods of working to suit mining customers.
