oil-gasIraq has officially commenced construction on a major domestic oil pipeline linking the southern hub of Basra to the western district of Haditha, the oil ministry announced Friday, May 1.
The project serves as a strategic cornerstone in Baghdad’s efforts to diversify its export routes amid heightened regional instability.
Designed to carry 2.5 million barrels per day of oil, the 700-kilometer (435-mile) pipeline project has been allocated an initial $1.5 billion, though the completion timeline remains contingent on the approval of future budget cycles, according to a ministry spokesperson.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who chaired a follow-up meeting on the project Sunday, described the pipeline as a "proactive step" intended to safeguard Iraq’s economy.
The Prime Minister noted that the project, first approved in 2024, is specifically designed to guard against potential disruptions to existing export corridors.
The strategic importance of the Basra-Haditha line lies in its versatility. Once operational, it will allow Iraqi crude to be diverted toward several international outlets, including:
The push for new infrastructure comes as regional conflict continues to threaten traditional shipping lanes, with the recent closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing war involving Iran, has severely curtailing exports from major producers, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, sending global oil prices higher.
While Iraq recently resumed flows through the Kirkuk–Ceyhan pipeline following an agreement with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Baghdad is simultaneously working to revamp a separate, unused pipeline.
That project would allow Iraq to pump crude directly to Türkiye’s Ceyhan port, bypassing the KRG region entirely.
By linking the southern oil fields to the western Haditha pumping station, Iraq aims to ensure that its primary revenue source remains insulated from the volatile geopolitical landscape of the Persian Gulf.
