Türkiye has submitted a proposal to NATO for a new military fuel pipeline project designed to strengthen energy security on the alliance’s eastern flank, National Defense Ministry officials announced Wednesday.

Speaking during a weekly press briefing, ministry officials stated the NATO Fuel Pipeline Project would be financed through the alliance’s common funds, with the approval process for the package currently underway within NATO.

Defense officials highlighted the project's strategic importance given recent geopolitical volatility in the Strait of Hormuz.

By establishing a dedicated overland route, the pipeline aims to reduce NATO’s reliance on maritime fuel transport, while simultaneously improving fuel sustainment and interoperability among allied forces.

"Our project is five times more cost-effective than its alternatives and, if approved, will become operational in a much shorter period," the ministry said in a statement, while also addressing regional air defense coordination.

Beyond the Spanish Patriot missile system already stationed in Türkiye, NATO has assigned two additional Patriot systems to the country following recent regional conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Meanwhile, Germany is scheduled to rotate one of these systems into place by June.

Ministry officials emphasized Türkiye’s critical position within the alliance, pointing to its experienced armed forces, a rapidly expanding domestic defense industry, and its geographical location bridging Europe, the Black Sea, the Caucasus, and the Middle East.

According to the ministry, European nations are increasingly recognizing Ankara's role in shaping the future of European security architecture amid shifting global threats.

The issue of building a fuel pipeline to serve NATO’s Eastern flank has been lingering for a while. In March, Eastern European allies pushed the pipeline project ahead of the alliance’s summit in Ankara.
