The United Arab Emirates is planning to construct its first multi-fuel pipeline to safeguard exports of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel as severe transit restrictions continue to choke the Strait of Hormuz.

State-run Abu Dhabi National Oil Company is evaluating the refined oil products pipeline to completely bypass the crucial trade route, Adnoc Executive Vice President for Trading Philippe Khoury announced.

Shipping through the Strait has ground to a near halt since the Iran war began three months ago on Feb. 28.

The crisis has forced Middle East oil producers to develop new infrastructure to circumvent Tehran’s control over global exports, which typically account for about a fifth of the world's oil supply.

"We spend a lot of time seeing how we can reinforce our channels of supply and our systems," Khoury said, noting the company is preparing for a prolonged crisis.

The planned multi-fuel link will operate similarly to the U.S. Colonial Pipeline, switching between different refined products.

It marks a critical shift for the UAE, which currently relies on a single 1.5 million-barrel-per-day crude oil pipeline running from Habshan to Fujairah on its east coast.

While that line has pumped at maximum capacity since the conflict erupted, its output remains capped, and the Fujairah port has faced frequent attacks.

To ease the bottleneck, Adnoc is already building a second crude pipeline to double its Fujairah-bound capacity by early next year. According to a person with knowledge of the plans, the refined products pipeline will be the next priority on Adnoc’s agenda.

Only Saudi Arabia and the UAE possess pipelines capable of moving oil to ports outside the Persian Gulf without crossing other nations.

Saudi Aramco has successfully diverted most of its exports to the Red Sea port of Yanbu via its East-West pipeline.

Khoury added that the UAE is also reconsidering a separate, previously discussed west-east pipeline. That project would allow neighboring Gulf producers to bypass the Strait of Hormuz entirely by routing their exports across UAE territory.
