HD Hyundai has secured an order for ultra-large container ships worth around 1.46 billion USD, recording the largest container ship order volume in 18 years since the shipbuilding supercycle in 2007.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), the intermediate holding company for HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding business, announced on Sunday, November 23, that it has signed a shipbuilding contract with HMM for eight 13,400-TEU dual-fuel container ships. The total contract value amounts to 1.456 billion USD. The vessels ordered are 337 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and 27.9 meters in height. They are equipped with LNG dual-fuel engines and a significantly enlarged fuel tank—expanded by approximately 50%—to enhance operational efficiency. Of the eight vessels, two will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and six by HD Hyundai Samho, with deliveries scheduled consecutively through the first half of 2029.

Through this contract, HD Hyundai has achieved its largest container-ship order volume since 2007, when global cargo demand peaked during the economic boom (793,473 TEU). HD KSOE has secured orders for a total of 720,000 TEU (69 vessels) in container ships this year, marking the highest order volume among domestic shipbuilders.

Container ships built by HD Hyundai are regarded as highly cost-competitive when considering operating expenses over the vessel’s entire lifecycle, despite their relatively higher prices compared to competitors.

Since 2023, HD Hyundai has applied “HiNAS Control”—an autonomous navigation assistance system developed by Avikus, a subsidiary specializing in autonomous navigation—to newly built vessels. Actual operational data has confirmed that the system’s autonomous navigation support features and RPM optimization deliver a 15% reduction in carbon emissions and a 15% improvement in fuel efficiency.

An HD Hyundai representative stated, “We are further solidifying our position in the global market based on advanced technological capabilities and customer trust,” adding, “Going forward, we will continue to lead the decarbonization of the shipbuilding and shipping industries through technological competitiveness focused on eco-friendly and high-efficiency vessels.”

Greece’S Thessaloniki Port Launches Largest €195.6M Expansion In Its HistoryThe Thessaloniki Port Authority in Greece has embarked on its largest expansion project ever with the signing of a major construction contract, initiating one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades in its history. Port of Thessaloniki (ThPA S.A.) and the joint venture “METKA S.A.-TEKAL S.A. (PIER 6) J/V” on Wednesday signed the construction works contract for the expansion of the port infrastructure of Pier 6 of the port, marking a major milestone in the port’s long-term development strategy. The contract concerns Mandatory Enhancements No. 1 (Pier 6, Port Infrastructure Expansion) of the Concession Agreement between the Hellenic Republic and ThPA S.A. The project includes the expansion of Pier 6, with an additional length of 513 meters, a width of 306.5 meters, and the significant deepening (dredging) of the navigation channel and the vessels’ maneuvering area, for the safe mooring of even the ULCV type vessels (ultra large container vessels). The signing of the contract signals the start of the main construction phase, with an implementation period of 40 months and a total budget of 195.6 million euro. Once completed, the expansion will increase the total capacity of the Container Terminal from 650,000 TEU to 1,500,000 TEU, enabling Thessaloniki to serve simultaneously a higher number of container vessels and accommodate ultra large container vessels of up to 24,000 TEU – unique capabilities for Northern Greece. According to ThPA S.A., the financing of the project will be covered from the own existing capital of ThPA S.A. as well as from banking loans. Dr Ioannis Tsaras, the chief executive officer of ThPA S.A., noted: “With the signing of the contract, the Port of Thessaloniki is entering a new era of development. The expansion of Pier 6, the largest upgrade project in the history of the port, creates the conditions for Thessaloniki to strengthen its role in the Mediterranean as a strategic trade hub for Southeast Europe. “This is not just an important piece of infrastructure, but a project that increases the operational capacity of the port, empowers the regional logistics ecosystem, and generates varied and multiplier benefits at both the local and national level.”

A concession agreement for the development of the Laldia Container Terminal in Chattogram, Bangladesh, has been signed between the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and APM Terminals, part of Danish shipping conglomerate A.P. Moller-Maersk, together with local partner QNS Container Services Ltd. APM Terminals states that the concession agreement will allow the company to operate the terminal for a period of 30 years, which can be extended based on KPIs (key performance indicators). The Laldia Container Terminal will be fully designed, financed, built and operated by the investors as a first-of-its-kind model for Bangladesh’s port infrastructure, and the project represents an investment exceeding $550m, making it one of the largest Public Private Partnership (PPP) investments in the country’s history. The project is part of the Sustainable Green Framework Engagement between Denmark and Bangladesh, a bilateral initiative aimed at fostering green investment, job creation and sustainable economic relations. Once operational in 2030, the terminal will expand Bangladesh’s annual port handling capacity by over 800,000 TEUs (twenty-feet equivalent units), improving the country’s global trade efficiency and connectivity, thereby helping the key engines of Bangladesh’s export economy such as textiles, apparel and manufacturing reach their import markets around the world. The new deep-water facility will, over time, allow the Port of Chattogram to handle vessels potentially up to 6,000 TEU, compared to the current limit of 2,800 TEU, and the terminal is expected to generate over 1,000 jobs during construction and more than 500 when in operation. “It is with great honour that we enter this agreement with Bangladesh, which underscores the great potential that this important market has. This greenfield project enables us to play an active role in supporting the growth of the local manufacturers, exporters, importers and the broader Bangladeshi economy. We are strengthening our commitment to the country with an aim of creating a safe and efficient terminal as well as creating skilled jobs for the future prosperity of the region,” says Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals.

2020 Bulkers Offloads Newcastlemax Bulkers In $145.5M DealLars-Christian Svensen-led 2020 Bulkers has inked an agreement to sell each of its 2020-built newcastlemax vessels, Bulk Sydney and Bulk Santos,to an unaffiliated third party. The Oslo Børs-listed newcastlemax shipowner said it had agreed to offload the vessels for a total consideration of $145.5m. The shipowner didn’t disclose the name of the buyers. The company will retain the vessels’ respective operating cashflows until closing of each vessel transaction, 2020 Bulkers said in a filing, each of which is agreed to take place during the first quarter of 2026. Meanwhile, the shipowner expects to recognize a net book gain of approximately $61m upon completion of the transactions. The company’s board of directors will, subject to completion of the sales, determine the allocation of the net proceeds from the transactions. As it is reported, each sale is subject to certain closing conditions, in line with industry standards. Magnus Halvorsen, chairman of 2020 Bulkers, commented: “The sales of Bulk Sydney and Bulk Santos for an average price of US$72.75 million per vessel conclude the monetization of the company’s newbuilding program, which was initiated in September 2017. “Between August 2019 and June 2020, we took delivery of eight scrubber-fitted Newcastlemax vessels at an average all-in delivered cost of US$47.6 million per ship. Driven by a prudent capital structure and active commercial risk management, the company has been profitable every quarter since the first vessel was delivered. “The newbuilding program was financed with US$142 million in equity in addition to the required debt financing. Since inception, the company has returned US$238 million to shareholders through capital distributions and dividends and expects to realize US$312 million in net proceeds from the sale of the six remaining vessels, following repayment of outstanding debt. “In addition, the company holds US$17 million in cash as of today and will retain the cash flow from the vessels until they are delivered to their respective buyers.” Currently, 2020 Bulkers has six newcastlemax dry bulk vessels in operation. All vessels are fitted with exhaust scrubber systems.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi attended the inauguration ceremony for the $500 million upgrade, which includes 955 meters of new quay, 510,000 square meters of yard space, 12 quay cranes, 30 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes, and more than 90 trucks. The expansion represents a significant infrastructure investment in one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors. SCCT is one of eight hub terminals selected by APM Terminals to form the backbone of the East-West network operated by A.P. Moller – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. “It is with great pleasure that we celebrate our commitment to Egypt, our partnerships and the dedicated people delivering excellence every day at this terminal,” said Lars Mikael Jensen, Head of Hubs and Ocean Collaboration at APM Terminals. “SCCT provides world-class operations and is a central part of our global network”. He forecast benchmark palm oil futures on Bursa Malaysia could reach 5,500 ringgit per ton in the January-to-March quarter, maintaining his September outlook, if Indonesia continued to seize plantations and pushed on with plans for a higher mandatory biodiesel blend. Indonesia plans to implement a 50% biodiesel blend, known as B50, in the second half of 2026. The government expects to start road tests for the fuel next month. “If Indonesia goes to B50, there will be shortages of palm oil and prices will rocket,” Mistry, a director of Indian consumer goods firm Godrej International, told an industry conference in Bali. Each vessel will feature advanced energy-efficient technologies, and will operate under a 10-year time charter, with extension options, for a global liner company. The vessel design and commercial structure were optimized collaboratively with the charterer to ensure an optimal fit for their network, operational profile, and long-term sustainability objectives. The initial charter period is expected to generate approximately $375m in revenue and around $242m in EBITDA. According to MPCC, the project will be financed through a balanced mix of equity and debt. This investment comes as part of MPCC’s ongoing strategy for a younger, more efficient, and environmentally compliant fleet, with reduced exposure to regulatory and environmental risks. “Our fleet renewal strategy continues to gain momentum with this latest initiative,” said Constantin Baack, chief executive officer of MPCC. “I would like to thank the teams on both sides for the constructive dialogue and the trustful cooperation over the past months, which has been essential in bringing this project to fruition.
