USA, New York: ANDRITZ has been awarded a contract by the New York Power Authority to supply five new generator stators for the Robert Moses Power Plant.

ANDRITZ will design, manufacture, and deliver five 215 MVA stators to replace some of the existing 13 units at Robert Moses. This major NGN upgrade will extend the plant’s service life, improve operational reliability, and strengthen New York’s clean energy supply. NYPA is also working with ANDRITZ on upgrades at the Lewiston plant, with a stator replacement contract currently in progress.

“Hydropower plays an important role in New York’s growing renewable electricity generation,” said Hany Aoude, Regional Executive VP, North America, AN-DRITZ. “The new stators will upgrade one of the most significant hydropower resources in North America and help ensure reliable, carbon-free electricity for New Yorkers for decades to come.”

Each stator, more than 10 m in diameter, will be manufactured locally on site. The project is expected to take around 10 years, combining global expertise with local production to accelerate New York’s green energy transition.

This upgrade is part of the Next Generation Niagara (NGN) modernisation programme, aimed at digitalising and enhancing the plant’s operation to secure a reliable supply of renewable electricity across New York State while supporting the state’s decarbonisation targets.

The Robert Moses Power Plant, together with the Lewiston Pump Generating Plant, forms the Niagara power project, the largest hydropower complex in New York State and the third largest in the United States, with a combined capacity of 2,675 MW. Commissioned in the early 1960s, the facilities supply renewable electricity to businesses, municipal utilities, and rural co-operative systems. Located next to Niagara Falls, the plants are now undergoing major modernisation to ensure reliable, affordable electricity for decades.
