US-based energy storage integrator Powin has partnered with Circulor, a supply chain traceability solutions provider, to introduce battery passports for energy storage systems in grid applications.
Their collaboration focuses on material traceability from source to lithium iron phosphate battery, setting a new standard for responsible sourcing in the battery energy storage system (BESS) market.

The partnership employs Circulor’s traceability technology to monitor the origins and carbon emissions of key materials such as graphite, lithium, aluminium, steel and copper.
The initiative provides proof of material provenance and ensures compliance with Europe’s Batteries Regulation and US import and trade restrictions.
Powin senior vice-president of regulatory affairs Mike Wietecki stated: “The energy transition requires not only advanced technologies but also a firm commitment to responsible sourcing.
“Partnering with Circulor enables us to deliver traceable, transparent energy storage solutions that align with global trade and sustainability standards. This is a pivotal step in building a more ethical and resilient supply chain for the clean energy future.”
Powin’s battery packs for the European market will now include a digital battery passport, accessible via a QR code, exceeding the requirements of Europe’s February 2027 battery passport deadline.
This feature offers Powin’s customers enhanced transparency, allowing for more precise servicing and maintenance of energy storage systems through detailed production information and in-life performance monitoring.
Circulor CEO and founder Douglas Johnson-Poensgen stated: “The BESS market is growing rapidly and it’s clear why — our power systems need the clean, firm power that batteries can deliver.

The Greenville PV module factory, part of Phase I, began production in April 2025 and manufactures Gamma Series™ Monofacial and Vega Series™ Bifacial PV modules. With the addition of the new cell plant, Boviet Solar will create a fully integrated U.S. manufacturing hub, capable of producing both PV cells and modules domestically. This development is expected to strengthen the U.S. solar supply chain while delivering high-performance, Made-in-USA products to customers.
The PV cell facility is scheduled for completion and mass production in the second half of 2026. Middle East And Sub-Saharan Africa Target 62 Gw Solar Manufacturing By 2030 – ReportThe solar industry in the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa is showing strong potential to emerge as a global supply chain hub, and recent developments suggest that the region could become a key replacement for Southeast Asia in solar manufacturing. According to Sinovoltaics’ latest report, the focus is on building full vertical integration by setting up manufacturing capacities across modules, cells, wafers, ingots, and polysilicon. This is being driven by both government support and local content requirements, as countries in the region seek to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers while creating jobs and strengthening their clean energy transition. The region’s geographic proximity to Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa provides it with an additional advantage by making it possible to serve both local and neighboring markets.
The report points out that many economies, including those in the Middle East and Africa, have learned lessons from challenges faced in Europe, India, and North America, which do not yet have sufficient polysilicon, wafer, or cell manufacturing capacity. By building capabilities now, these regions are setting themselves up as potential exporters of solar modules and related materials. For example, depending on tariff structures in the United States, the Middle East and Africa could even become a viable export partner if U.S. tariffs remain favorable. However, challenges remain, particularly in the form of grid infrastructure limitations and possible supply chain disruptions. Despite this, the overall ambition is significant, with projections indicating that by 2030 the region could achieve 62.12 GW of solar module manufacturing, 52.55 GW of cell production, 45 GW of polysilicon capacity, and 290,000 tons of metallurgical-grade silicon.
The growth of solar manufacturing capacity in the region is largely backed by Chinese investments and technology, which continues to play a central role in global solar supply chains. While much of the ownership and financing may be international, the benefits for local economies are clear. The creation of large-scale manufacturing hubs will generate employment opportunities and stimulate related industries. In addition, the long-term environmental benefit of reducing reliance on fossil fuels aligns with both global sustainability goals and the urgent need for cleaner energy transitions across these regions.
The report also highlights that the solar supply chain maps produced by Sinovoltaics are updated regularly to capture new factories, expansions, and investments across the regions. These maps provide stakeholders with an updated view of the manufacturing ecosystem and help track the rapid progress being made. The insights are aimed at helping procurement teams, investors, and project developers understand where future supplies will come from and how to structure their strategies in line with emerging trends.
In conclusion, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa are positioning themselves as serious contenders in the solar manufacturing sector. Mitsubishi Withdraws From 1.8 Gw Of Japanese Offshore Wind ProjectsJapan's Mitsubishi Corporation has announced its withdrawal from three Japanese offshore wind power projects, citing significant changes in the global business environment, including tighter supply chains, rising inflation, and volatile interest rates. A Mitsubishi-led consortium won the first state auctions for these three wind parks, located in Chiba and Akita prefectures, in 2021. The projects had a combined projected capacity of 1.8 GW and were expected to start operations between 2028 and 2030.
The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has not yet responded to requests for comment on whether the vacated sites will be re-auctioned. Meanwhile, Japan’s Industry and Land ministries have proposed extending offshore wind project leases from 30 to 40 years to help developers better manage rising construction costs and complete their projects. This proposal was submitted to a joint expert panel of METI and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).
Denmark’s Ørsted exited the Japanese market in 2024 as part of a global restructuring, while the UK’s Shell has recently reduced its offshore wind team in Japan amid a broader scale-back of its low-carbon operations.
Japan aims to expand its offshore wind capacity to 10 GW by 2030 and 45 GW by 2040, up from just 0.3 GW at the end of 2024.

Planning Application Filed For 1 Gw Ayre Offshore Wind Project (Scotland)Thistle Wind Partners (TWP) has submitted a planning application to Scotland’s Highland Council for the onshore infrastructure required for its 1 GW Ayre floating wind park, located off the coasts of Caithness and Orkney (Scotland). TWP — a consortium comprising France’s Qair and Belgium-based DEME and Aspiravi — had already submitted the offshore scoping report to Scotland’s Marine Directorate in July 2024. In addition to Ayre, the consortium is also developing the 1 GW Bowdun fixed-bottom wind park, located off the coast of Aberdeenshire (Scotland).
The onshore planning submission follows an extensive site selection process that took into account environmental constraints, public consultations, and engagement with local communities and stakeholders in Caithness (Scotland). The Ayre project secured a seabed lease through the ScotWind leasing round in 2022. The Highland Council’s public consultation on the onshore plans will run from 29 August to 28 September. The Ayre project is expected to be operational by 2033, following an estimated three-year construction phase.
In parallel, in June 2025, the Scottish Government launched a public consultation to raise the country’s offshore wind target to 40 GW by 2040, up from the current target of 8–11 GW by 2030. It projects a potential capacity of 40 GW by 2035, reaffirming its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.

3.5 Gw Of Offshore Wind In New England Could Offset Natural Gas Price Spikes: ReportThe report examines the “potential regional market and Massachusetts ratepayer impacts” if 3.5 GW of offshore wind had been generating power between Dec. 2024 and Feb. 2025.
“Even using the most conservative assumptions about cleared offers in Forward Capacity Auction 15 … clearing additional qualified capacity from OSW would have reduced FCA15 costs by at least $128 million, with 83% ($106 million) allocable to Massachusetts load zones,” the report said.
Daymark Energy Advisors found that “injecting near-zero marginal cost offshore wind into the energy market would have reduced ISO-NE Locational Marginal Prices by 11% ($12.60/MWh), reducing wholesale load costs across New England by roughly $400 million. Roughly $129 million of the regional savings would have been allocable to [Massachusetts electric distribution companies].”
Last winter was the “first since 2014 to see below-normal temperatures over the course of an entire season,” ISO-NE said in an April release, and natural gas prices rose in accordance with demand.
President Donald Trump and New England leaders like Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, D, and New Hampshire Gov. Kelly Ayotte, R, have suggested the region build a new natural gas pipeline to curb the high cost of energy.
“They have no way of getting [the natural gas] there because it’s been held up by New York,” Trump said in March.
Ayotte has shown reticence about offshore wind development, and signed a bill earlier this month that eliminated language requiring the state’s Office of Energy Innovation to support offshore wind development. Lamont has also shown hesitance about offshore wind, with Connecticut opting not to procure any new offshore wind projects during a 2024 joint solicitation between Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
However, Lamont told CNBC on Tuesday that the Trump administration’s decision to halt work on the 700-MW Revolution Wind project under construction offshore Rhode Island and Connecticut was “sudden, erratic and insane” and said he will try to strike a deal with the administration to keep the project going.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said in May that New York Governor Kathy Hochul had indicated “her willingness to move forward on critical pipeline capacity” for natural gas, after Hochul negotiated with the Trump administration to lift a stop work order on the 810-MW Empire Wind 1 project offshore New York.
Daymark’s report noted that the deployment of emission-free offshore wind “would have offset natural gas, oil and coal-fired generation, reducing fossil fuel burned by 34 million MMBtu over the 3-month period.”
This would result in greenhouse gas emissions savings of 1.8 million tons, “equivalent to removing almost 400,000 passenger cars from the road for a year,” the report said.

Gentari And Gamuda To Develop 1.5 Gw Renewable Projects For Data CentresGentari Renewables and Gamuda Energy have entered into an agreement to jointly develop about 1,500 MW of solar projects with battery energy storage systems in Malaysia. The projects will be implemented under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS). The projects will supply electricity to hyperscale data centres in the country.
Additionally, the collaboration combines Gentari’s experience in large-scale renewable energy operations with Gamuda’s background in the engineering, construction and delivery of infrastructure projects. Demand from hyperscale data centres, driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services, is projected to exceed 5,000 MW by 2035. This project is being undertaken to address the growing requirement for reliable renewable energy supply to support such facilities.
Earlier this month, Gentari signed a power purchase agreement with Amazon Web Services for an 80 MW wind project in Tamil Nadu, expected to begin operations in mid-2027 and generate around 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually.

Mseb Agro Power Floats Tender For 1.6 Gw Solar ProjectsMSEB Agro Power Limited, a subsidiary of the MSEB Holding Company Limited, has floated a tender for the procurement of 1.6 GW of decentralised ground-mounted solar projects under the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0.
The scope of work under the project includes financing, ownership, design, construction, and operation of the solar projects at the feeder level across the state. Furthermore, the scope also includes providing operations and maintenance services for a period of 25 years.
According to the tender guidelines, the bidders must submit an earnest money deposit of Rs 100,000. Additionally, the successful bidders need to furnish a performance bank guarantee of Rs 500,000. The last date for bid submission is August 28, 2025. The projects are expected to begin commercial operations within 12 months from the date of issuance of letter of award.

Guthrie And Gamuda To Develop 1.2 Gw Solar Projects In MalaysiaSD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie) and Gamuda Energy have signed an agreement to jointly develop, own, and operate solar power projects with energy storage systems, in Malaysia. These projects will have a combined capacity of 1,200 MW. The partnership will utilise Guthrie’s land resources across Malaysia along with Gamuda’s experience in renewable energy development in the Asia Pacific region.
As a part of the agreement, in the first phase, both companies will identify Guthrie’s under-utilised land across the country to evaluate their suitability for solar project development. Further details on the implementation of the partnership will reportedly be announced at a later stage.
In July 2025, Gamuda Energy signed an agreement with the Downie family to co-develop over 600 MW of wind and solar projects along with 600 MW of battery storage projects in Central Tasmania, Australia. The company will take an equity stake in the portfolio, secure development rights, and deliver the projects under engineering, procurement, and construction contracts..

Miso’S Fast-Track Interconnection Review Draws 26.6 Gw In Proposals, Dominated By GasGas-fired generating capacity accounted for about three-quarters of the 26,575 MW that has applied to take part in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s fast-track interconnection review process, the grid operator said Tuesday.
MISO received 47 applications for its Expedited Resource Addition Study, which aims to bring power supplies online quickly to meet near-term grid needs. The process allows planned resources that meet eligibility criteria to sidestep MISO’s standard interconnection queue reviews.
ERAS projects must meet a clear resource adequacy or reliability need, be able to come online in three to six years and have support from a “relevant electric retail regulatory authority,” such as a state utility commission.
Most applications were gas-fired projects, while storage projects accounted for about 15% of the proposed capacity and wind, solar and a nuclear project in Iowa made up about 4.5%, 4% and 2.5% of the capacity, respectively, according to MISO’s list of projects.
“This broad mix underscores MISO’s evolving energy landscape and the urgent need to bring new resources online to address growing reliability challenges,” Aubrey Johnson, MISO’s vice president of system planning, said in a press release. “These projects are designed to meet localized and accelerating demand growth.”
MISO will study ERAS projects on a first-come, first-served basis, with the first quarterly study beginning on Sept. 2. Under the ERAS process, MISO will study up to 10 projects per quarter, up to a maximum of 68 projects before the program ends on Aug. 31, 2027.
Proposals from Louisiana include five gas-fired power plants totaling 6,170 MW and a 208-MW storage project, according to MISO. Potential projects in Indiana include three gas-fired projects totaling 4,100 MW and three storage projects totaling 1,470 MW. Proposals from Minnesota include five storage projects totaling 1,250 MW, two gas-fired power plants totaling 824 MW, two solar projects totaling 193 MW and a 162-MW wind project.
Applications for the next quarterly review cycle are due Nov. 9.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved similar fast-track interconnection reviews for the PJM Interconnection and the Southwest Power Pool earlier this year.

Renewables Make Up 91% Of The 15 Gw Of Generation The Us Added In First 5 Months Of 2025: FercThe latest infrastructure report, which covers January through May, predates the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Republican domestic policy megabill that stripped away tax credits for renewable energy. It also predates several stop-work orders the administration issued to wind projects and new guidance from the Treasury Department that could further restrict the growth of renewables.
Still, the report highlights the scale of the solar and wind project pipeline at a time when the country’s hunger for energy is growing. It also suggests the trend will continue.
Out of 133 GW of “high probability” additions expected to come online by 2028, FERC projects that 84% will be from solar (90 GW) and wind (23 GW). Gas is projected to make up about 20 GW — just 15%.
“This reaffirms what we’re seeing in the market, which is solar continues to deliver new power to the grid faster and cheaper than any other source of electricity,” said Stephanie Bosh, senior vice president of communications for the Solar Energy Industries Association. “Despite the Trump administration putting its thumb on the scale to slow solar down, the American people are demanding low-cost, reliable power, and solar is stepping up to meet that demand every day."
According to the nonprofit Sun Day campaign, solar has been the largest source of new generating capacity added each month for 21 consecutive months, since September 2023.
The organization also said in a statement that at least 25%-30% of U.S. solar capacity comes from small-scale systems, such as rooftop arrays, that are not included in FERC’s data.
“Including that additional solar capacity would bring the share provided by solar + wind to more than a quarter of the nation’s total,” it said. Including hydropower (7.7%), biomass (1%) and geothermal (0.3%), “renewables currently claim a 32% share of total U.S. utility-scale generating capacity.”
The FERC report does not track battery storage or small-scale solar.
In addition to new generation, the grid saw 244 miles of new transmission lines reach completion, including 160 miles of 345 kV transmission built in Colorado by the Public Service Co. of Colorado.

New Jersey, Keyport: A Massachusetts company has unveiled plans for a high-voltage transmission line to deliver offshore wind power from the New Jersey coast to the state’s grid.
Anbaric, based in Wakefield, calls the project the Boardwalk Power Link. It would be a 1,200 MW line, landing in Keyport, Monmouth County, and running nearly 33 km (21 mi) underground to South Brunswick in Middlesex County. There, it would connect to a new substation next to an existing power plant.
The line would not serve New Jersey’s first offshore wind farm, Ocean Wind, off Atlantic City, but would be available for other future projects. With the state aiming for 7,500 MW of wind power by 2035, Anbaric sees its project as a key piece of infrastructure.
“It became extremely clear that there were going to be opportunities to bring all this energy onshore,” said Janice Fuller, Anbaric’s mid-Atlantic president.
Environmental permits have already been secured from the state, with more applications in progress. Construction and connection could take up to five years.
Supporters say the project places transmission closer to New Jersey’s biggest demand centres. Critics stress the importance of ensuring transmission is ready before new wind farms are built, the “chicken-and-egg” of offshore power.
