The US power utility Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has announced an agreement with nuclear energy company ENTRA1 Energy to develop up to 6 GW of new nuclear capacity, marking the largest small modular reactor (SMR) deployment program in the United States to date.
Under the agreement, ENTRA1 will develop and own six energy plants across TVA’s seven-state service area. ENTRA1 will sell the electricity generated to TVA under future power purchase agreements, which could potentially supply power to approximately 4.5 million homes or 60 new data centers.
The project will use SMRs developed by NuScale Power. ENTRA1 and NuScale Power already operate a joint venture, ENTRA1 NuScale, with ENTRA1 holding the rights to commercialize, distribute, and deploy NuScale’s technology. TVA’s announcement did not specify a project timeline or disclose financial details.
In May 2025, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved NuScale’s 77-MW power module and the design for a 462-MW small modular reactor power plant.

Italy Launches Solar Auction Offering Up To 1.6 Gw Of CapacityItaly's energy agency, Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE), has launched the second solar auction under the country’s new incentive mechanism for renewable energy, the transitional FER X program. This procurement round is expected to allocate between 200 MW and 1.6 GW of solar PV capacity. It is open to commercial and industrial solar projects, as well as large-scale PV installations.
For PV projects with a capacity not exceeding 1 MW, the Italian government has excluded the use of solar modules, cells, and inverters manufactured in China. The stated objective of this restriction is to support European manufacturing of these components. This is based on the "EU resilience" criterion, which has been recognized and approved by the European Commission as a valid non-price criterion in public procurement.
In the most recent tender under the earlier phase of the FER X scheme, held in July 2025, the government awarded 278.5 MW of solar capacity across 53 sites and approved two wind projects totalling 88.4 MW. The auction attracted 1,387 project proposals, representing a combined capacity of around 17.5 GW, competing for a total available capacity of 8 GW.
As of the end of 2024, Italy’s installed solar capacity stood at 36 GW.

Taiwan Awards 2.8 Gw Ccgt Power Project To Mitsubishi Power And CtciMitsubishi Power, the power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has secured a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract worth JPY760bn (US$5.2bn) for a 2.8 GW CCGT power plant project at the Tung Hsiao power plant, operated by Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), the country’s state-owned power utility. The power plant is located in Tung Hsiao, Miaoli County, southwest of Taipei.
The project will be delivered as a full turnkey solution led by Mitsubishi Power in collaboration with CTCI Corporation, a major Taiwanese engineering and construction firm. It will involve the installation of five units, with gas turbines as the core technology; three M501J gas turbines supplied by Mitsubishi Power will be delivered for the first phase of the project. The five new units are expected to be commissioned sequentially between 2030 and 2031.
In 2024, natural gas accounted for 43% of Taiwan’s power generation.

Syrian Ministry Of Energy And Acwa Power Sign Agreement To Develop 2.5 Gw Of Renewables And StorageThe Ministry of Energy of the Syrian Arab Republic and ACWA Power, the world’s largest private water desalination company and a global leader in energy transition and green hydrogen, have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to explore the development of approximately 2.5 GW of solar and wind projects, alongside energy storage solutions and a proposed national technical training centre.
The agreement provides a framework for conducting detailed technical and commercial studies on existing power plants and the national grid, as well as evaluating and implementing a pipeline of renewable energy and storage projects.
The signing ceremony was held at the Syrian Ministry of Energy headquarters in the presence of H.E. Eng. Mohammad Al-Bashir, Minister of Energy of the Syrian Arab Republic; Mohammad Abunayyan, Founder and Chairman of ACWA Power; and representatives from the Saudi Ministry of Energy.
Under the JDA, ACWA Power and the Ministry of Energy will identify sites for around 1.0 GW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity and 1.5 GW of wind capacity, supported by potential grid-scale storage solutions to improve system reliability and flexibility. In addition, ACWA Power will study the establishment of a national technical training centre to prepare skilled technicians for construction and operations across approved projects. Dr. Moayad Samman, Country General Manager in Syria, ACWA Power, said: “Today’s agreement in Syria sets a clear pathway to bring best-in-class solutions to the Syrian power sector — solutions that combine reliable generation, cost competitiveness, and accelerated renewable energy integration. Our approach is holistic: we will study and prioritise rehabilitation where it makes sense, deploy new solar and wind capacity where it delivers the most value, and invest in people through a dedicated training centre so that local talent powers every stage of delivery. We look forward to working in Syria to transform studies into projects that add real capacity, strengthen the grid, and create skilled jobs.”

Syria And Acwa Power Sign Deal To Develop 2.5 Gw Of Renewable EnergyThe Syrian government and the Saudi energy group ACWA Power have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to explore the development of approximately 2.5 GW of solar and wind capacity in Syria. Under the agreement, ACWA Power will collaborate with Syria's government to identify suitable locations for the planned projects, which aim to deliver around 1 GW of solar PV capacity and approximately 1.5 GW of wind power. Grid-scale energy storage solutions are also being considered to improve system reliability and flexibility.
In June 2025, Syria signed a US$7bn agreement with a consortium from Qatar, Turkey, and the United States to rebuild its power sector, including four gas-fired power plants and a 1 GW solar park. The project is expected to add 5 GW of capacity, covering nearly half of current electricity demand and marking a key step in post-conflict recovery.
Syria’s power system has faced extensive damage since the outbreak of the war in 2011, with ongoing fuel shortages further limiting generation. As of the end of 2023, available capacity was estimated at just 1.6 GW, despite a nominal installed capacity of 9.6 GW.

The Us Moves To Revoke Approval Of 2.6 Gw New England Offshore Wind ProjectAccording to a court filing, the US administration plans to revoke federal approval for the New England Wind park off the coast of Massachusetts, developed by Avangrid, a subsidiary of Spain’s Iberdrola. The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is reconsidering its approval of the New England Wind construction and operations plan (COP), which may be vacated by 10 October 2025. This filing follows a lawsuit filed earlier in 2025 in the US District Court for the District of Columbia by local groups and individuals opposing offshore wind development. The lawsuit alleges that the government violated federal environmental laws in approving the project.
New England Wind was initially approved by the Biden administration in 2024. The project area, located south of Barnstable, Massachusetts, was divided into two leases—New England Wind 1 and New England Wind 2—with a combined capacity of 2.6 GW. New England Wind 1 was expected to begin construction in 2025 and enter service in 2029.
The US administration has recently targeted several wind parks, including moves to revoke permits for a 2 GW project in Maryland and issuing a stop-work order for Revolution Wind (700 MW), which is already 80% complete.

Uk Approves 1.5 Gw Offshore Windfarm In Irish SeaUK: The UK Government has approved development consent for a 1.5 GW offshore wind project in the Irish Sea. The Morgan Offshore Wind Project Generation Assets is a joint venture between JERA Nex, bp, and Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW).
The Development Consent Order was submitted in April 2024 and approved this week by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The site will be located 37 km off the north-west coast of England. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026/27, with the windfarm expected to enter operation by 2030.
Plans include up to 96 turbines and four offshore substation platforms. Local communities have been invited to review the project and assess potential impacts as it moves towards construction.
In parallel, the UK Government has announced new minimum requirements for offshore wind developers to invest in skills training and local communities. These measures form part of a broader Fair Work Charter, introduced in August, developed with input from trade unions, education providers, and businesses. The offshore wind sector is projected to employ up to 100,000 people by 2030, with 45,000 in direct roles and the remainder in supply chains.
Separately, industry movements continue in Europe and the US. Equinor has confirmed a $1 B investment in Ørsted, maintaining its 10 % stake and position as the company’s second-largest shareholder. Ørsted is preparing a rights issue to stabilise its balance sheet following new fiscal amendments in the US, which have increased tax burdens on large-scale wind and solar projects sourcing components from China.

Kuwait Launches Tender For 1.8 Gw Al-Khairan Phase 1 Thermal Power ProjectKuwait has launched the bidding process for the first phase of the Al-Khairan Independent Water and Power Producer (IWPP) project. The 1.8 GW project, to be fuelled by a combination of LNG and high-pressure natural gas, with gas oil as back up fuel, is being developed under a public-private partnership model by the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP), in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy. Located approximately 100 kilometres south of Kuwait City, the project will also desalinate water.
The scope of the tender includes the design, financing, construction, operation, maintenance, and eventual transfer of the facility. The selected developer will establish a project company to enter into a 25-year agreement to supply electricity and water to the government. Three consortia have been invited to submit proposals, led respectively by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, and China Power International Holding. Additionally, Nebras Power and Sumitomo Corporation are among the other qualified bidders.
At the end of 2024, Kuwait’s total installed capacity reached 20.3 GW, predominantly thermal power, with 12 GW generated from gas and 8.5 GW from oil.

Malaysia Approves 2 Gw Of Large-Scale SolarThe government of Malaysia has given the green light to 13 large-scale solar projects with a cumulative capacity of 1,975 MW.
The approvals conclude the fifth bidding round of the country’s large-scale solar programme, which opened for applications in January.
Aiming to procure 2 GW, the bidding round received 37 applications across two bid packages for a total capacity in excess of 4 GW, according to a statement published by Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra).
Petra says the 13 selected bidders complied with all the requirements set out in the request for proposals. The approved capacity during the scheme's fifth round is the largest agreed on since the LSS program was implemented in 2016. The scheme has now approved 4,263 MW of large-scale solar projects in total.
The ministry added that the newly-approved projects will begin generating electricity in 2027 and 2028.
Among the projects is a 200 MW floating solar array, one of Malaysia’s largest to date, PETRA says. Further individual project details are yet to be disclosed.
Malaysia’s cumulative solar capacity reached 2,306 MW by the end of 2024, up from 2,146 MW at the end of 2023, according to statistics published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The country has set a target of achieving a 40% renewable energy share in its national energy mix by 2040.
Last month, subsidiaries belonging to Malaysian companies Gentari and Gamuda revealed plans to develop 1.5 GW of solar tied to battery energy storage to supply hyperscale data centers located in Malaysia.

Bangladesh Scraps 5.68 Gw Of SolarThe Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has scrapped approvals for 34 solar power plants for which letters of intent (LoIs) were issued under the Special Provisions Act.
The LoIs are being canceled because no implementation agreements, power purchase agreements (PPA), or land lease agreements have been signed, said the BPDB. The canceled projects, supported by local and foreign investors, were expected to have a combined capacity of 5,681 MW.
The LoIs were issued under the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act without competitive bidding during the previous government.
After taking office, the current government in August 2024 suspended all negotiations, project selection, and procurement processes under the Special Provisions Act, citing widespread irregularities in awarding plant approvals, including tariff fixation.
This July, the government published an ordinance repealing the Special Provisions Act and decided not to authorize any more power plants under it. Future procedures for the canceled plants must follow an open tender process.
The renewable energy sector said the government’s cancellation of so many solar approvals sends “wrong signals” to foreign investors in particular.
“Foreign investors will now rethink while making any investment plan in Bangladesh due to uncertainty of policy sustainability in the country,” said Mostafa Al Mahmud, president of the Bangladesh Sustainable and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA).
He said entrepreneurs have already invested about $300 million in these projects. “We had requested several times to reconsider the decision, but the government did not respond,” he told pv magazine.

World’S Largest Solar Park Adds 1 GwA further 1 GW of solar is operational at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world’s largest single-site solar park, located in the United Arab Emirates.
Work is currently underway on the sixth phase of the project that will add a total of 1.8 GW of solar to the site, which is being implemented by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) under an independent power producer (IPP) model.
An update published by the government of Dubai confirms the sixth phase is approximately 68.59% complete, having reached the 1 GW threshold, with the remaining 800 MW under construction.
Over 2.2 million solar panels have been installed to date, with the number on track to reach over 3.9 million by the time the current phase of work is completed next year.
To date, the solar park’s cumulative production capacity stands at over 3.8 GW, according to figures published by DEWA. By the end of the decade, its capacity is expected to reach over 7.2 GW, exceeding the original 5 GW target, and will contribute to around 34% of Dubai’s total electricity capacity.
In February, DEWA issued a call for developers to assist with the seventh phase of the project on an IPP basis. The tendered solar facility will have a capacity ranging between 1.6 GW and 2 GW and will be connected to 1 GW of battery capacity, making it one of the largest solar-plus-storage projects in the world.
In April, DEWA Managing Director and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer announced that 47 global companies had expressed interest in developing the next phase.

Coal India Seeks Epc Bids For 3 Gw Of Grid-Connected SolarFrom pv magazine India
Coal India has started accepting expressions of interest from EPC companies for the development of 3 GW of grid-connected solar projects across India. Tentative sites include the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
The scope of work covers turnkey execution of the solar plants, including supply of PV modules, land procurement and the balance of system.
Based on the responses, CIL will launch a tender process to select EPC and operations and maintenance (O&M) contractors. The plants must be designed to connect with the nearby Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) network.
Applicants can propose capacities from 200 MW to 3,000 MW, depending on their capabilities. Projects must achieve a minimum capacity utilization factor (CUF) of 25%.
