The Railway Industry Association (RIA) has announced the panel of experts who will be judging this year’s Railway Industry Supplier Excellence (RISE) Awards.

The awards celebrate the excellence and achievements of the UK rail supply community in a range of categories. The winners will be announced at the RIA Dinner and RISE Awards on 26 June 2025 at The Landmark, London.

Grace Smithen, Marketing and Events Director, said: “The event celebrates the value organisations and individuals bring to the rail supply industry across a range of categories. We’ve already had a great response and look forward to further nominations.
“It is a real honour to celebrate the efforts of individuals and organisations, recognising the important role dynamic rail suppliers play in delivering a better and greener railway.”
More than 350 people attended last year’s event, with guests enjoying live entertainment including LED Acrobats and a charity raffle in support of the Railway Benefit Fund.
The evening was hosted by broadcaster and former Shadow Labour Minister Gloria De Piero, and featured keynote speeches from Steve White, Managing Director of Southeastern, and RIA’s outgoing and incoming Chairmen, David Tonkin and Noel Travers respectively.
Among the winners included Alex Hynes, Director General Rail Services, Department for Transport, who was named the ‘Client of the Year’ Award. The RIA Board chose Alex for his work as Scotland’s Railway Managing Director, being an excellent ambassador for rail and for advancing the way the industry tackles complex issues, all during a period where there has been considerable political change to navigate.

Uk’S Great Western Railway To Introduce New Class 175 TrainsUK-based train operating company Great Western Railway (GWR) has announced the introduction of 26 Class 175 trains to its fleet, aiming to enhance punctuality across its network.
This move is part of GWR’s strategy to modernise its regional and suburban services and align with decarbonisation efforts.
The fleet, comprising ten two-car and 16 three-car trains, is scheduled to commence operations in Devon and Cornwall later this year.
The first stage of this plan will see the replacement of older, less efficient diesel trains with these newer models.
By the end of the following year, all trains are expected to be fully operational.
Peninsula Rail Taskforce chair and councillor Andrea Davis said: “Rail services are a big part of our climate change and economic development offer, and we have been campaigning for extra rolling stock for some time.
“It is also great to hear that the additional trains will mean improvements to services elsewhere across the GWR network, but I am especially delighted with the news for Devon and Cornwall.”
The new trains can be connected to form four, five, or six-car formations, primarily serving the line between Exeter St Davids and Penzance, including routes to Barnstaple and Okehampton.
Before launch, GWR will train staff and prepare Laira depot for train maintenance.
GWR managing director Mark Hopwood said: “The benefits of these trains will be felt by customers across the whole of the GWR network. With more trains we will have more scope to increase resilience where it is needed most, delivering the reliability our communities deserve and need.
“They are a fantastic addition to our fleet and will provide a welcome boost as we seek to rejuvenate our regional and suburban services.”
In February 2024, GWR announced the trialling of UK’s first FastCharge battery technology, using a 2,400kW system to recharge trains in 3.5 minutes, supporting its goal to phase out diesel-only traction by 2040.railway

Unlocking Economic Growth: The Railway That Quadrupled Pas...The railway, which links Corby to London using a reopened branch line off the Midland Mainline, strongly illustrates the exciting potential of East West Rail to improve prospects for people and businesses along the route, bringing more jobs, prosperity and opportunity through improved connectivity.
The line reopened to passengers in 2009 and services are operated by East Midlands Railway (EMR). It links Corby to London calling at several towns and cities including Kettering, Wellingborough, Bedford, Luton, and Luton Airport Parkway where passengers can use the DART service taking them direct to the airport terminal.
The railway proved to be so popular that Network Rail electrified the line and carried out capacity improvements, allowing the number of trains to double in 2021. This new connectivity has led to a huge boost for Corby, providing much-needed regeneration and investment opportunities as well as creating new jobs.
Local business and council leaders believe East West Rail – which Chancellor Rachel Reeves has endorsed as part of the Government’s plans for an Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor - can reap similar success.
The railway will enable quicker low-carbon ways of travelling between Oxford and Cambridge, with the increased connectivity creating more job opportunities – particularly in tech and life science industries – and provide easier access to affordable homes.
When the line first opened, services were hourly, but it’s been so popular it was upgraded and electrified a few years later, allowing a half-hourly service to then operate, which now means passenger numbers have more than quadrupled from just under 118,000 in 2009/10 to over 498,000 in 2023/24. And it's this improved connectivity which the local council believes has played a key role in regenerating the town.
Sean Rose, Head of Policy at Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Corby has transformed. We've got new businesses moving into the town, new people investing in Corby and that is what the railway can do. It can unlock levelling up that really makes a difference for businesses and the local economy.”
Jason Smithers, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council, has seen many benefits that the line has brought to Corby. He said: “It was a massive impact. If you look at what that regeneration project has delivered, the railway station, you talk about the station quarter and all the building that's going on there.
“A railway station is crucial to the economy of any town or city. Doctor Beeching, in his wisdom, removed a lot of smaller branch lines, which wasn't really a long-term vision that's held this country where it should be. So having more of these schemes in smaller towns and cities would be great.”
Naomi Green, Managing Director, England’s Economic Heartland, said: “Corby Station demonstrates the significant potential of rail to transform the places it serves – unlocking improvements to quality of life and growing economic prosperity which traditional appraisal methods sometimes fail to adequately capture.
“Likewise, East West Rail will transform our region – boosting our economy, reducing reliance on the car and removing barriers to accessing jobs and services. With the right door-to-door connectivity and seamless integration, these benefits will be felt by a wide catchment of communities and businesses. Indeed, people living in Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough will be just a short journey away from connecting into services to Cambridge, Milton Keynes, Oxford and Bedford.”
The new railway has also allowed more people to come and live and do business in the town. In fact, when the line first opened, a marketing campaign which branded Corby as ‘North Londonshire’ targeted the capital with the aim of attracting Londoners to move to Corby not just to live, but to also work and do business, providing a further boost to the local economy.
Mark Redding, Communications, Communities, Partnerships and Marketing Manager for Urban & Civic, which manages Corby’ Priors Hall Park development, said: “We have examples of people who saw those adverts going up on the tube, come up to ‘North Londonshire’ on the train, saw what we have here, loved it and moved up here. They've moved their businesses up here as well.
“We know that connectivity is a really important thing for local people when they are looking for places to buy a new home or settle down so being able to be so close to that connectivity is a real benefit for people here at Priors Hall Park.”
David Hughes, CEO, EWR Co, said: “The reopened railway line to Corby is a strong case study in the transformational power of investing in rail infrastructure to drive prosperity, more job opportunities and help regenerate towns and cities. Railchap, by Railway Robotics, is a lightweight robot designed to travel on railways, reducing the need for human presence in hazardous areas and cutting the costs of inspection and light maintenance. Worker safety is always a top priority in railway maintenance, and the industry is increasingly investing in solutions that enhance safety. Currently, inspections are often carried out manually or using special-purpose rail-maintenance trains, exposing workers to risks. Railchap keeps “Boots Off Ballast,” ensuring safer operations for all involved.

Metro Accelerating Change For International Women’S DayIn celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, West Midlands Metro has hosted a special event to honour the contributions of female colleagues, acknowledging their crucial role within the business and the wider community.
The event focussed on exploring ways to create more opportunities for women within the organisation and the communities it serves, in line with this year’s IWD theme, #Accelerate Change.
Sophie Allison, Managing Director of Metro and the organisation’s first female leader expressed her pride in the tram network’s commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusivity.
“Transport has traditionally been a male-dominated sector, but this has transformed in recent years with a significant number of women establishing themselves in a variety of roles, as tram drivers and light rail engineers to senior managers, as well as key customer-facing positions,”
“We can’t afford to be complacent. It’s essential that we continuously explore ways to encourage more women to take advantage of the rewarding career opportunities available in Metro and the wider light rail sector.”
The event took place at the Wednesbury depot today (March 10) on the Monday following International Women’s Day which was on Saturday, March 8. It featured motivational presentations from notable guests, including Dal Kalirai, Chief Executive of Women in Transport, and Katie Newell from Black Country Women’s Aid, which was recently selected by the Metro team as its charity of the year.

Metro Signalling Bid Handed Over To The GovernmentA business case to replace the signalling system on the Tyne and Wear Metro has been officially submitted to the Government.
The bid backed by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has been put together by Nexus, the public body which runs Metro, to make the strong case for investment in signalling.
Major investment, estimated at around £400 million, is required to replace Metro’s original signalling system, which dates from the construction of the system in the 1970s and 80s. Signalling is a safety critical asset on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Without it, the Metro cannot run.
The case was submitted to ministers at the end of last year, and it has now been reviewed by the Department for Transport (DfT) transport board and endorsed to move to the next phase of the development process.
Cathy Massarella, Managing Director of Nexus, said: “It’s absolutely vital that we replace the signalling system on Metro.
“We have submitted our Strategic Outline Business Case to demonstrate the need for replacement and that has now been reviewed by the DfT. We will now progress to the next stage of development and will remain in dialogue with the Government about this very important issue.
“Signalling is the safety-critical system which underpins the operation of our Metro system. Without signals we can’t run our trains. We’ve had the same signalling technology since the late 1970s and it needs to be replaced. We are working with analogue technology in a digital era.
“This investment is critical for Metro and critical for the whole region. A new signalling system is what we need to ensure the long-term future and sustainability of the Metro and also to pave the way for any future expansion, which is vital for growth, jobs and improved connectivity.”
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said: “The North East needs funding to update the Metro’s aging signalling system. As we have seen with the issues we have had in recent years with our aging fleet, rail infrastructure – such as trains, tracks and signalling – needs regular funding to safeguard the services in the longer-term and to run a reliable service for passengers.

It has become increasingly difficult to maintain. The Nexus team has managed to extend the designed life of the signalling system through regular maintenance and repairs. However, parts and skills to keep this aging system operational are increasingly hard to come by and it is now having a significant impact on service provision. Currently, up to 62% of all infrastructure related delays are due to signalling asset failures and this will only increase.
Since 2010, Nexus has managed to secure the future of the Metro through the investment of £1 billion in a fleet of new trains, major renewals to the track, bridges, overhead line and other supporting systems. The renewal of the signalling system will ensure the full benefits of this 14-year programme of investment is realised and secure the future of Metro for the next generation.railway

Metro'S Lifeline: The £400 Million Upgrade That Can'T WaitThe bid backed by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has been put together by Nexus, the public body which runs Metro, to make the strong case for investment in signalling.
Major investment, estimated at around £400 million, is required to replace Metro’s original signalling system, which dates from the construction of the system in the 1970s and 80s. Signalling is a safety critical asset on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Without it, the Metro cannot run.
The case was submitted to ministers at the end of last year, and it has now been reviewed by the Department for Transport (DfT) transport board and endorsed to move to the next phase of the development process.
Cathy Massarella, Managing Director of Nexus, said:
“It’s absolutely vital that we replace the signalling system on Metro.”
“We have submitted our Strategic Outline Business Case to demonstrate the need for replacement and that has now been reviewed by the DfT. We will now progress to the next stage of development and will remain in dialogue with the Government about this very important issue.
“Signalling is the safety-critical system which underpins the operation of our Metro system. Without signals we can’t run our trains. We’ve had the same signalling technology since the late 1970s and it needs to be replaced. We are working with analogue technology in a digital era.
“This investment is critical for Metro and critical for the whole region. A new signalling system is what we need to ensure the long-term future and sustainability of the Metro and also to pave the way for any future expansion, which is vital for growth, jobs and improved connectivity.”
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said: “The North East needs funding to update the Metro’s aging signalling system. As we have seen with the issues we have had in recent years with our aging fleet, rail infrastructure – such as trains, tracks and signalling – needs regular funding to safeguard the services in the longer-term and to run a reliable service for passengers.

Class 175 Trains To Help Great Western Railway Improve Reliability Across The NetworkGreat Western Railway (GWR) will welcome 26 Class 175 trains to its fleet to help improve punctuality and reliability for customers, replacing older diesel trains that are more expensive and less environmentally friendly to run.
The move marks the first stage of the train operator’s plans to rejuvenate its regional and suburban services while preparing the way for decarbonisation.
The 10 two-car trains and 16 three-car trains are expected to start to enter service in Devon and Cornwall later this year, with the entire fleet expected to be operational from the end of next year.
Able to be connected in four, five and six-car formations, the trains will operate predominantly on the line between Exeter St Davids and Penzance, as well as to Barnstaple and Okehampton.
The Class 175s will release trains to improve performance in other areas of the network.
This boost to the fleet will lead to the removal of some of its oldest and least efficient diesel trains, which have become more expensive to maintain as spare parts become more difficult to find on the open market.
GWR Managing Director, Mark Hopwood, said: “The benefits of these trains will be felt by customers across the whole of the GWR network. With more trains we will have more scope to increase resilience where it is needed most, delivering the reliability our communities deserve and need.
“They are a fantastic addition to our fleet and will provide a welcome boost as we seek to rejuvenate our regional and suburban services.
“We’d like to thank our industry partners, and the Department for Transport, for helping us get to this point and we look forward to welcoming the trains into service later this year.”
Chair of the Peninsula Rail Taskforce, Councillor Andrea Davis, said: “Rail services are a big part of our climate change and economic development offer, and we have been campaigning for extra rolling stock for some time.
“It is also great to hear that the additional trains will mean improvements to services elsewhere across the GWR network, but I am especially delighted with the news for Devon and Cornwall.”

ORR has authorised Newsham Station, enhancing rail connectivity in Northumberland, with support from Northumberland County Council and Network Rail.

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has authorised the new Newsham railway station, set to open on 17 March, as part of the Northumberland Line project. This station is a key element of the wider Northumberland Line programme, which aims to improve regional rail services.
ORR’s authorisation includes the construction of two platforms, a footbridge with stairs and lifts, waiting shelters, customer information screens, lighting, and other upgrades. This milestone confirms that the station meets health and safety, accessibility, environmental, and reliability standards.
Steve Fletcher, Deputy Director, Engineering and Asset Management at ORR, said: “This is an important step for improving rail connectivity in Northumberland, and we look forward to seeing the station open to passengers soon. Our team worked closely with Northumberland County Council and Network Rail to support them through the authorisation process.”

Ethiopian Railways And Korail Sign MouThe Ethiopian Railway Corporation and the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which aims at improving the overall efficiency and reliability of Ethiopian rail services.
“Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding represents an important milestone in strengthening the cooperation and laying the groundwork for potential future agreements. This partnership will bring tremendous benefits not only to the Ethiopian Railway Corporation, but also to the Ethiopian economy as a whole,” the CEO of Ethiopian Railways, Helina Belachew, said at signing ceremony.
By improving the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of the rail infrastructure, Ethiopian Railway expects that this collaboration will stimulate economic growth and development in the region as well improving Ethiopian rail services.
Ethiopian Railways “is committed to facilitating this collaboration by working with the relevant authorities and providing the necessary support,” Helina Belachew underlined.
“KORAIL is committed to supporting the advancement of Ethiopia’s railway infrastructure,” the Chief Executive Officer of Korea Railroad Corporation, Moon hee-Han, said. He added that there is a need for collaborative exploration of railway projects to enhance pan-African railway cooperation through overseas development assistance.
A Korea-Ethiopia rail working group has been stablished to facilitate the sharing of railway information and knowledge and business updates between the two countries. This group will serve as a forum for discussions and project status sharing between the railway systems of Korea and Ethiopia.
Currently, Ethiopia is constructing the 392 km Awash – Woldia/Hara Gebeya standard gauge line. A USD 1.7 billion engineering, procurement, and construction turnkey contract has been awarded to the Turkish company Yapi Merkezi and Systra, working as a consultant. The project also includes the construction of 10 substations, 52 different-size bridges, 8 power control stations and a maintenance centre.
The Awash – Gebeya rail line will connect the north of Ethiopia with Addis Ababa – Djibouti rail at Awash rail node providing Ethiopia with access to maritime transport through the Port of Djibouti.
USD 1.6 billion is the value of another project consisting of the construction of a 216 km standard gauge electrified line between Weldiya Hara Gebeya and Mekele. The project also involves the construction of 76 bridges, 370 culverts and 8 tunnels totalling 10 km, of which the largest tunnel is 3.7 km long.
The railway line starts from Weldiya towards Hara Gebeya and crosses the cities in the northern part of our country and reaches Mekelle City, which has a dry port. As the project will pass through different cities, it will have a great role in strengthening the social interaction of the society as well as for the development and economic benefit of the cities. China Communications Construction Corporation (CCCC) is responsible for the construction of the line while China International Engineering Consulting Corporation (CIECC) is working as a consultant.
The 752 km Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway with 19 stations is a landmark rail project for Ethiopia and its cross-border rail connection, which has been into operation since 2018. The electrified line allows trains to run at a speed of 120 km/h. USD 4 billion was the total value of the investment which was supported by a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China.
It should be noted that the Ethiopian Railways has been responsible for the Addis Ababa light rail line which was inaugurated in November 2015. The 17 km line, which is the first LRT in the eastern and sub-saharan Africa, connects the city centre with the industrial areas located in the south part of the city. Chinese China Railway Group Limited company (CREC) has built the line which is operated by 41 light rail vehicles.
USD 475 million was the total value of the project which has been 85% co-financed by a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China and 15% of its costs were covered by the state budget.railway

Eur 4 Billion Funding For Rome Metro ExpansionRome metro Line C extension is continuing as the Capital City Council has approved a draft agreement with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for a EUR 4 billion financing.
The extension project includes the section from San Giovanni to Venezia with three stations which is currently under construction, and from Venezia station, the line will be extended to Clodio/Mazzini delivering passengers four new stations. The authorities also plan the construction of a 2.9 km section from Clodio/Mazzini to Farnesina which will be served by two stations.
“We want this strategic infrastructure to reach Farnesina passing through San Pietro [St. Peter] to give the city a much more efficient and sustainable public transport system. The extraordinary Jubilee of 2033 [to commemorate the 2,000-year anniversary of Christ’s death] can be an extraordinary opportunity to accelerate this path that Rome deserves. I hope we can reach this goal by renewing the institutional collaboration with the government and the region that has helped us achieve great results for the works of this year’s Jubilee: it is a virtuous way that can guarantee the conditions to give Rome in a certain time frame a new metro line that is essential to be on par with other major European capitals,” the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, said.
Rome City Council says that the same resolution has been approved for the contractual adjustment for higher costs of the extension from Colosseum/Fori Imperiali station to San Giovanni station (excluding the station).
The overall value of the financing for the new sections and for the cost adjustment for the section currently under construction is almost EUR 4 billion.
This is extraordinary news for our city because the construction of the entire Metro C Line is of fundamental importance for Rome’s mobility as it connects the most important traffic attractors from both a residential and tertiary perspective. And it is also a strategic line for the rail interchange network that it will create, at Ottaviano and San Giovanni with Line A, with Line B at the Colosseum and at Piazza Venezia with the future Line D. An authentic revolution in mobility that will affect numerous quadrants and hundreds of thousands of residents and workers,” the Councilor for Mobility of Rome Capital, Eugenio Patanè, said.
Webuild is involved in the construction of line’s extension. In June 2023 the Metro C consortium led by Webuild and Vianni Lavori launched the construction of Venezia station, and this year is expected that the Porta Metronia – Colosseo/Fori Imperiali extension will enter operation.
In 2022, the Italian government allocated EUR 1.6 billion for the completion of Line C, with EUR 610 million designated for the Venezia station and EUR 990 million for the subsequent extension to Clodio/Mazzini.
The new stations three stations of the extension under construction – Porta Metronia, Colosseo-Fori Imperiali and Venezia – afre situated in the historic centre. The remaining stops of Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano and Clodio/Mazzini are in the design phase. The project also includes 4 interchange stations in San Giovanni and Ottaviano (with line A), Colosseo (with line B) and Pigneto which ensures connection to the commuter rail network through theFL1 line (Fiumicino Aeroporto – Fara Sabina line) and FL3 (Rome–Capranica–Viterbo rail line).
A distinctive feature of the Rome Metro Line C project is the inclusion of archaeostations, which serve as expansive, integrated museums that seamlessly blend modern transportation with the city’s rich historical heritage. These archaeostations will not only facilitate efficient travel but also connect some of the most significant cultural landmarks in Rome, offering a unique opportunity for passengers to experience the city’s ancient history firsthand. The route will be enriched by numerous archaeological discoveries unearthed during the excavation process, turning each station into a site of historical and educational value.
In addition to the already operational San Giovanni station, upcoming archaeostations will be strategically located at Porta Metronia, Colosseo/Fori Imperiali, and Venezia, allowing for a deeper connection between the city’s past and present.railway

The RIA Board chose Alex for his work as Scotland’s Railway Managing Director, being an excellent ambassador for rail and for advancing the way the industry tackles complex issues, all during a period where there has been considerable political change to navigate.

Scotland’S Railway Leading Feasibility Study For Redevelopment Of Blair Atholl StationScotland’s Railway has announced it is leading a feasibility study to explore the redevelopment of Blair Atholl station building.
The initiative, which is being led by ScotRail in partnership with Network Rail, Perth & Kinross Council, Friends of Blair Atholl Station, and the Highland Mainline Community Rail Partnership, aims to repurpose the historic station building into socially-rented residential housing.
The feasibility study will cover Stage 2 Feasibility and Design Costs, supporting the proposed conversion of the building into three much-needed affordable residential units.
ScotRail said that the successful redevelopment of Blair Atholl station would:
Blair Atholl station, which first opened in 1863, sits on the Highland Mainline. The station is well served with up to ten ScotRail services each day connecting the village with Inverness, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. The Caledonian Sleeper service also calls at Blair Atholl.
The ground floor of the station building previously housed a ticket office and customer facilities, however, these closed in the 1980s. The upper floor, originally the stationmaster’s residence, remained in use by a third-party tenant until 2022, but today, the building stands vacant.
While capital funding for any redevelopment works is yet to be secured, the launch of the feasibility study represents a major step forward in realising the project’s vision.
David Lister, ScotRail Safety, Sustainability & Asset Director, said: “The redevelopment of Blair Atholl station is a fantastic opportunity to bring a historic railway building back into meaningful use.
“This project would not only preserve a key piece of railway heritage but would also support the local community with the proposal to provide much-needed affordable housing.
