The transportation ministries of Ireland and Northern Ireland have secured EUR 228 million from the Shared Island Fund for cross-border railway projects through 2030. Of this amount, EUR 100 million will go toward planned track renovations in Northern Ireland on the Derry – Belfast and Belfast – Dublin lines to increase speeds and reliability. An additional EUR 93 million will go toward accelerated infrastructure measures in Ireland as part of the DART+ Coastal North project. These include the modernisation of signalling systems, a turnaround facility in Malahide and passing tracks in Clongriffin. This is intended to reduce scheduling conflicts between the Enterprise and DART on the Northern Line and to support the deployment of the new DART battery-electric multiple units (BEMU) on the Dublin – Drogheda line starting in 2026. An additional EUR 35 million will ensure the continuation of the hourly service on the cross-border Enterprise line introduced in October 2024 through 2030. The Irish Department of Transport supplemented these funds. Since the introduction of the hourly service, demand has risen by about 40%. Both ministries also intend to work with the relevant authorities to enable a 15- to 20-minute connection time between the Dublin – Belfast and Belfast – Derry lines. These measures are based on the All-Island Strategic Rail Review and support the planned introduction of the new Enterprise fleet in 2030.
