Rvnl Completes First 100 Metres Of Tunnel-2 On Indore-Budni Rail Line

RVNL has marked an early breakthrough on the Indore-Budni New Line Project by completing the first 100 metres of Tunnel-2 in Madhya Pradesh. The milestone was accomplished within just two months in highly challenging Rock Class-V geology. The 8.6-km Tunnel-2 will significantly enhance rail connectivity, capacity and operational efficiency along the corridor.

Introduction:

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna Central Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, has marked an important milestone in India’s rail infrastructure development with the successful completion of the first 100 metres of Tunnel-2 on the Indore–Budni New Railway Line Project in Madhya Pradesh. This achievement represents a strong and confident start to one of the most technically demanding components of the project.

The Indore–Budni New Line is a strategically significant rail corridor aimed at improving connectivity and capacity in central Madhya Pradesh. A key element of this corridor is Tunnel-2, an 8.6-kilometre-long tunnel that will play a crucial role in enabling smoother rail operations through difficult terrain. The excavation milestone has been achieved from Portal-1 by RVNL’s Project Implementation Unit (PIU), Bhopal.

Overcoming Challenging Geological Conditions:

What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is the geological complexity of the terrain. The tunnel passes through Rock Class-V strata, which is considered one of the weakest and most challenging geological formations for tunnelling. Such rock conditions are highly fractured, unstable and prone to deformation, demanding meticulous planning, precision engineering and robust safety measures.

Adding to the complexity, the tunnel alignment passes beneath two active nalas located above the tunnel crown. This introduces risks related to groundwater ingress and surface instability, further increasing the technical challenges associated with excavation. Despite these constraints, RVNL successfully completed the first 100 metres of tunnelling in approximately two months, demonstrating strong project management and execution capabilities.

Strategic Importance of Tunnel-2:

Tunnel-2 forms a vital component of the Indore–Budni rail corridor, passing through the villages of Kamlapur, Thalghewaria and Hatnora in the Bagli and Kannod tehsils of Dewas district. Once completed, the tunnel will significantly enhance rail connectivity in the region by providing a direct and efficient route through difficult terrain.

The new rail line is expected to contribute to capacity augmentation and operational efficiency on this strategically important route. Improved connectivity will not only benefit passenger movement but also support freight operations, thereby contributing to regional economic development and facilitating future traffic growth in Madhya Pradesh.

Engineering Excellence and Safety Focus:

To successfully execute tunnelling in such weak and complex geological conditions, RVNL deployed advanced excavation methodologies and ensured immediate installation of primary support systems. Continuous geotechnical monitoring was carried out to control ground deformation and maintain structural stability throughout the excavation process.

Safety remained a top priority during execution. Real-time monitoring and disciplined engineering practices ensured worker safety while maintaining progress targets. This milestone underscores RVNL’s emphasis on precision engineering, proactive risk management and timely decision-making in difficult terrain.

Insight:

Shri Saleem Ahmad, Chairman and Managing Director, RVNL, said,  “Achieving the first 100 metres of Tunnel-2 excavation in such weak and complex geological conditions is a commendable accomplishment by the RVNL team. This milestone reflects our strong focus on safety, engineering excellence and disciplined execution. RVNL will continue to adopt the best technologies and practices to ensure timely completion of the Indore–Budni New Line Project while maintaining the highest quality standards.”

Key Highlights of the Milestone:

RVNL’s Growing Infrastructure Legacy:

RVNL has built an illustrious legacy over more than two decades, originally established to bridge infrastructure gaps in Indian Railways by fast-tracking project execution. Since its inception in 2003, RVNL has successfully completed over 157 railway projects covering more than 16,500 kilometres.

Over time, the organisation has expanded beyond its original rail infrastructure mandate into the broader domain of “All Infra.” RVNL has executed projects through innovative Public-Private Partnership models and diversified into metro rail projects across nearly 10 cities. Its consistent performance has earned it excellent ratings from the Department of Public Enterprises for fourteen consecutive years.

Conclusion:

The successful completion of the first 100 metres of Tunnel-2 marks a strong beginning for the Indore–Budni New Line Project. By overcoming complex geological challenges with precision and safety, RVNL has reaffirmed its reputation for engineering excellence, timely execution and its commitment to strengthening India’s rail infrastructure.
