railwayWabtec Corporation has won key contracts to supply more than 680 advanced pantograph systems for major rail and metro projects across India. The systems will support Chennai Metro Phase-2, Mumbai Metro Lines-4, 5, and 6, along with MEMU and Vande Bharat Sleeper programs, strengthening efficiency and reliability in electrified rail operations.
Introduction:
Wabtec Corporation has secured multiple contracts to supply more than 680 pantographs for several major commuter rail and metro projects across India. The advanced systems will enhance fleet availability and support reliable, efficient, and sustainable rail operations across the country’s rapidly expanding electrified transport network.
The contracts cover key urban and national rail programs including Chennai Metro Phase-2, Mumbai Metro Lines-4, 5, and 6, as well as Indian Railways’ MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) and Vande Bharat Sleeper train programs. These projects represent significant investments in modern rail mobility and highlight the growing demand for high-performance power collection technologies.
Under the agreement, Wabtec will manufacture the pantograph systems at its state-of-the-art Transit facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in late 2026, supporting upcoming fleet expansions and rolling stock deployments across the projects.
Projects Covered Under the Contracts:
The pantograph systems will be deployed across several key rail and metro programs, including:
These deployments will contribute to improving operational reliability and efficiency across both urban metro networks and mainline rail services.
Advanced Pantograph Technology:
Wabtec’s pantograph systems incorporate several engineering features designed to ensure reliable current collection and efficient performance in demanding operational environments.
Key technological highlights include:
The pantographs comply with EN and IEC international rail standards, making them suitable for modern electrified rail networks with demanding operational conditions.
Strengthening India’s Electrified Rail Network:
India has significantly expanded electrification across both metro systems and the national railway network in recent years. Advanced power collection systems such as pantographs play a critical role in maintaining reliable train operations and reducing maintenance costs.
With improved efficiency, reduced wear on overhead equipment, and enhanced durability, Wabtec’s systems are expected to support higher fleet availability and improved service reliability across multiple rail corridors.
The contracts also reinforce Wabtec’s strong presence in India’s rail sector and its collaboration with rolling stock manufacturers, system integrators, and railway authorities involved in major infrastructure programs.
Insight:
Ajay Mani, Managing Director of Wabtec Transit India (FTRTIPL) said, “India continues to make substantial investments in modernizing and expanding its commuter rail infrastructure. These orders underscore the trust our customers place in Wabtec and our longstanding commitment to the country’s rail ecosystem. Our proven pantograph technology is designed for modern mobility needs and capable of operating in even the most demanding service conditions.”
Conclusion:
The new contracts mark a significant milestone for Wabtec’s operations in India, strengthening its role in supporting the country’s expanding electrified rail infrastructure.
