Road & BridgeWorks are underway on the $50 million restoration of the San Remo Bridge, with the project set to improve the long-term durability of the key link between mainland Victoria and Phillip Island.
Also known as the Phillip Island Bridge, the crossing connects San Remo and Newhaven and carries approximately 3.5 million visitors and up to 15,000 vehicles each day, making it one of regional Victoria’s busiest transport links.
The restoration works are expected to be completed by mid-2028 and will be delivered while maintaining access for motorists and pedestrians throughout construction.
Lane and shared path closures will be kept to a minimum, while marine vessel access beneath the bridge will remain available during the works.
From 3 August 2026 until late 2026, a temporary 62.5-tonne mass limit will apply to heavy vehicles using the bridge. Passenger vehicles, grocery deliveries and essential services will not be affected.
Heavy vehicle operators are encouraged to check the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s National Network Map before travelling to confirm current access arrangements.
The restoration program involves highly technical works that will be undertaken with measures in place to minimise impacts on the surrounding marine environment.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Ros Spence, said the project would help ensure the bridge remains a reliable transport connection for decades to come.
“We’re getting on with the job of restoring the San Remo Bridge, keeping it safe and reliable for the millions of motorists who rely on it every year,” Spence said.
“The bridge will remain open throughout works, with lane closures kept to a minimum.”
Member for Bass, Jordan Crugnale, said the investment reflected the importance of the bridge to the local community.
“This $50 million investment recognises how important the San Remo Bridge is to Bass Coast families and ensures it serves the community for generations to come,” Crugnale said.
