India is on the brink of a sustainable industrial revolution — and green steel is at its core. As one of the world’s largest steel producers, India’s transition to low-carbon steelmaking could significantly reduce national emissions while positioning the country as a global green manufacturing hub.
Green steel refers to steel produced without fossil fuels, using alternatives like green hydrogen and renewable-powered electric arc furnaces. With the steel sector currently contributing nearly 12% of India’s industrial emissions, decarbonizing this industry is critical for meeting the country’s net-zero target by 2070.The shift toward green steel will require a phased strategy: developing green hydrogen infrastructure, repurposing existing facilities, and introducing supportive policy mechanisms. Importantly, it also opens the door to innovation, job creation, and climate-resilient growth.
Major players in the Indian steel industry are already exploring clean technologies, while government policies like the National Green Hydrogen Mission support this transition. But scaling up remains a challenge, especially in aligning costs, energy availability, and industrial competitiveness.India's ability to lead in green steel will depend on strong public-private collaboration, global partnerships, and investment in research and innovation. Done right, green steel could become India’s climate gamechanger — reducing emissions while fuelling economic strength.
