steelPosco is rolling out a digital transformation (DX) strategy across the company, from administrative work to manufacturing, to bolster future competitiveness, transforming its workplaces into “smart” factories and offices. The company aims to automate manufacturing in high-risk tasks and reflect worker knowledge through AI. In steelmaking, the company successfully applied an autonomous operation system last year. Robots are used to automatically detect the location of slag to remove it, and AI analyzes variables to determine optimal oxygen levels. These automatic and intelligent models have helped strengthen productivity and safety. Posco has also adopted AI and lidar sensors for use on cranes to load and handle wire rods, an industrial feat that overcomes the awkward shape of the loads. AI is also used to enhance product inspection, as well as in steel manufacturing and logistics. On the business side, Posco has begun implementing its intelligent office strategy, which encompasses purchasing, marketing and business support. In 2023, in cooperation with PoscoDX, the company adopted its own AI platform, Private GPT, for use in the workplace. With continued development in AI, it is also used to assist in employee decision-making, while also taking on repetitive work.
While Posco continues to focus on securing world-class competitiveness in manufacturing and safety through the expansion of intelligent factories and intelligent offices, the company will also continue to develop its AI use to maximize efficiency.
