Roofings Rolling Mills Ltd (RRM), one of the largest and most modern steel producers in East and Central Africa, has successfully started up its new cold-mill complex in Uganda, achieving stable operation and consistent product quality.
In 2022, Roofings selected Danieli as the single-source technology partner to design and supply the advanced cold-mill complex, supporting its expansion into the flat products market. The project included a Cold Reversing Mill (CRM), a Hot-Dip Galvanizing Line (HDGL), a Color Coating Line (CCL), and a Coil-to-Coil Trimming Line (CTC).
Danieli supplied the complete mechanical, electrical, and automation systems, applying proprietary process know-how developed through continuous R&D and operational feedback. With the completion of the CTC line in March 2025, both hot commissioning of the HDGL and CCL have been finalized, marking major milestones in the project. The first galvanized coil was produced in October 2025 while the first color coated coil on 28 November, 2025
Cold reversing mill
The single-stand, four-high Cold Reversing Mill has a nominal capacity of around 150,000 tpy and feeds the galvanizing line. It features high-response Hydraulic Automatic Gauge Control (HAGC) and a closed-loop roll-coolant system, enabling stable rolling of ultra-thin strip down to 0.15 mm. Danieli Automation Level 2 systems were integrated from the early design stages, supporting rapid ramp-up; during the first three weeks of commissioning, the mill reached the contractual rolling speed of 1,100 m/min.
Galvanizing line
The galvanizing line is designed to produce commercial quality and full-hard (FH) grades at speeds up to 160 m/min, processing strip thicknesses from 0.15 to 0.8 mm and widths from 600 to 1,250 mm.
The Danieli Centro Combustion horizontal annealing furnace integrates recuperative heating, a direct-fired cleaning zone, low-inertia radiant tubes for temperature uniformity, and a high-efficiency jet cooler. Accurate coating control down to 40 g/m² per side is ensured by the Danieli Kohler X-Jet wiping system. The finishing section processes coils down to five tons for service-center applications.
Color Coating Line
The Color Coating line is designed to produce construction sheets and coil, processing strip thicknesses from 0.2 to 0.8 mm and widths from 600 to 1,250 mm. The coating line will process incoming coils weighing up to 15 tons and can produce coils down to a minimum size of 5 tons, to comply with the actual prepainted material market.
The high‑capacity Color Coating Line features horizontal catenary‑type ovens, enabling the production of a wide range of final products while ensuring consistently superior quality standards. The line is complemented by the DAN‑COATER system with single slide design, which guarantees precise and uniform chemical treatment and paint application, delivering excellent coating performance across all product categories. Notably, the line achieved prime‑quality product right from the very first centimeter of production, demonstrating its outstanding process stability and technological robustness.
The project is contributing to the development of Uganda’s steel industry by strengthening the local value chain and enhancing its competitiveness in regional and international markets.

The South East Asia Iron and Steel Institute (SEAISI) was incorporated in 1971 under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE). It is registered as a limited company in the Republic of Singapore. Previously in Singapore and the Manila, the Secretariat is now permanently based in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
SEAISI is a technical institute and its main objective is to promote the iron and steel industry in the South East Asia region. It achieves its objectives by facilitating technology transfer from around the world, especially from Japan, Korea and Taiwan. SEAISI organizes a major international conference and exhibition every year and amongst its publications are the Statistical Year Book and the Monthly ASEAN Iron & Steel Journal.
SEAISI enjoys a large membership base with members coming from all parts of the world, including leading steel companies and material suppliers and equipment suppliers.
