steelTata Steel Nederland has joined the European Circular Steel for Mass Market Applications (CiSMA) research project to develop high-grade steel made fully from recycled scrap using electric arc furnace technology. The project aims to support low-carbon steel production for key sectors such as automotive, home appliances and industrial equipment.
CiSMA targets a 70% reduction in carbon emissions in sheet steel production by using 100% recycled scrap and circular manufacturing methods. While large-scale fully scrap-based steelmaking is still challenging, the project is expected to help produce premium-quality steel with 30–40% scrap content. The consortium includes major European partners such as Volvo Cars, Electrolux Professional and voestalpine, with funding under the EU’s Horizon Europe program.
