German Railway Engineers Float In 1,800T Rotating Part
The last section of Friesenbrücke, Europe’s largest rotating rail bridge was recently floated into place, bringing to a key milestone the Wunderline project, which will improve rail links between Germany and the Netherlands. It is a moveable bridge that will rotate to allow the passage of sea-going vessels. The new bridge replaces a bascule span that was hit by a ship in 2015. As well as providing a crossing for trains, it provides passage for cyclists and pedestrians. It will be completed and commissioned in the spring. Work on Friesenbrücke has been ongoing since summer 2021 (link opens in new tab). sbp had responsibility for the 1,800t moveable bridge section. It was assembled and balanced in Papenberg and then stored on two pontoons. Engineers dammed the river with a barrage to achieve a constant water level. They then used steel cable winches and self-propelled modular vehicles to move the 145m rotating part into position before lowering it on to the substructure by ballasting the pontoons. Operators will be able to rotate the moveable section 90 degrees in minutes. The movement is controlled from the listed bridge keeper’s house, which has been adapted and modernised. The Friesenbrücke consortium includes Adam Hörnig, MCE and Depenbrock. MKP collaborated with DR. SCHIPPKE+Partner on the design of Friesenbrücke. The Wunderline Route upgrade is a project by DB InfraGO and the national railway company of Germany Deutsche Bahn to improve infrastructure between the German city of Bremen with Groningen in the Netherlands.

China: 7.6Km Sea Bridge Open To Traffic

Longmen Bridge will reduce the travel time between Qinzhou Port and Fangchenggang Port from 90 minutes to 25 minutes.

Perth, Australia, Celebrates Opening Of Pylon Pair
A pair of cable-stayed pedestrian and cycle bridges either side of Heirisson Island in the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia, were officially opened on 22 December. Three of the bridge’s pylons are inspired by wannas, or digging sticks. They commemorate a woman named Balbuk who maintained her rights to Country by using her digging stick to protest development. The fourth pylon represents a boomerang, to recall Yagan, a warrior who resisted colonisation. The design was by ipv Delft, with local engineers WSP (link opens in new tab). The two bridges were intended to completely separate path users from traffic and lie 90m downsteam from a major road bridge known as the Causeway. The area around the bridges has seen major landscaping to incorporate artworks and new seating and rest areas. Main Roads Western Australia marked the opening with a free family-friendly event, including a light show, food trucks and a free sausage sizzle, as well as a visit from Santa.

Philippines: Wavering Bridge Closed To All But Light Vehicles
An island province in the Philippines has been placed under a state of calamity as the Department for Public Works and Highways has recommended a major repair to a steel bridge that is its only access to the rest of the nation. Biliran Bridge, built in 1975, crosses a narrow stretch of sea between Samran Island and Biliran Island, 950 miles south of Manila in Region VIII. Viral video footage from 25 December shows the deck oscillating, amid concerns about its structural integrity and safety. An inspection by the Regional Office VIII Bridge Expert on 24 December found damage under the deck to stringers, and steel cross bracing. The built-up sections of spans 3 and 4 were also damaged. The inspection also found loose nuts and bolts at span one. The survey concluded that the bearing plates and deck slab were in fair condition. The damage was attributed to saltwater and movement of vehicles. The inspector has recommended repair or replacement of the damaged components. Light vehicles can use the crossing one at a time; but heavier cargo will be carried by barge. The provincial and local governments are working together to ensure public safety and reduce disruption to the passage of essential goods and to stabilise costs.

Us Rail Body Awards Contracts For Sawtooth Bridges
Amtrak has awarded the contract for the replacement of a pair of bridges in a complex location on the USA’s North East Corridor (NEC) railway. A JV consisting of Skanska, Walsh & Herzog has been selected to replace two bridges in New Jersey, north east USA. And Amtrak has awarded a second contract for pre-construction support services to a JV of AECOM and STV. It will be delivered under a construction manager at-risk (CMAR) approach. Amtrak owns and operates the 1907-built Sawtooth Bridges, which carry more than 400 trains each day. But access to the two-mile work corridor has to be coordinated with several different rights of way owners, including NJ Transit, Amtrak, PATH, Conrail and others. The replacement project will double capacity, and allow the lifting of a speed restriction. It will see the construction of three new bridges.

Uk Bridge’S Weight Capacity Doubled Using Steel Plate System
VolkerLaser has announced the completion of a project to strengthen and widen a 1960s bridge in the north west of England to meet the needs of their client Enfinium’s waste-to-energy plant. Skelton Grange Bridge near Leeds, West Yorkshire, crosses both the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. During the planning process for a new waste-to-energy facility, it was found that the bridge would need strengthening for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). The structure is also valued by pedestrians and cyclists as it carries Sustrans cycle Route 67 and the Trans-Pennine Trail walking route. So the refurb included provisions for these users. The work involved strengthening the half joints to increase the weight capacity from 18t to 40t. VolkerLaser installed an advanced system not used before in the UK. It employs steel plates clamped to the top and bottom of the half joints. The contractor then passed vertical Macalloy bars through the plates and stressed them on completion. It says that these make the bridge inaccessible to some users, including those using cargo bikes and mobility aids.

15 Missing As Brazilian Concrete Bridge Fails

Fifteen people are missing. The river at the crossing is 50m deep. Some media outlets have published a video in which a local politician points out cracks and ground deformation on the approach roads moments before the accident.

Rail Line Lifting Bridge To Improve Surge Resilience
NJ Transit has awarded a contract for the lifting portion of the structure that will replace Raritan River Bridge on the North Jersey Coast Line in the north east of the USA. It will build a replacement vertical lift bridge with two tracks. The alignment is slightly offset from the current structure, but it will link back to the existing tracks. The Raritan River Bridge presently includes a moveable span that swings open to allow passage of ships. It was completed in 1908 but does not have capacity to withstand lateral forces exerted by ocean surges during storm events. NJ Transit considers the structure safe for train travel, but acknowledges that it was damaged during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The surges and debris strikes left the deck out of alignment. Work continues on the approaches to the new bridge under a separate contract.

Heart Or Swan? China Railway Group Joins Art Bridge

Usa Transport Agency Gets Fund For Drone Bridge Surveys
Massachusetts Department of Transportation has received US$1 million funding from the USA Government to accelerate its use of drones. Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) – otherwise known as drones – can be used to collect data about bridges and other highway structures. Applications for drones technology include advanced bridge inspection, asset mapping and construction monitoring. The funding will allow MassDOT’s Aeronautics Division to create a digital software systems infrastructure so that it can collect, store, process and disseminate drone data throughout the organisation. The technology will reduce costs, enhance inspection opportunities and allow MassDOT to monitor multiple construction projects at the same time. This funding award coincides with media buzz about drone activity amid a recent spike in reports to the FBI. The US Department of Homeland Security issued a statement this week reassuring the public that the UAS activity did not represent a risk to safety and security. But it also recommended that the US government enact counter-UAS legislation.

Normal Inspection Regime Could Not Have Anticipated German Bridge Fail
The collapse in September of a tram bridge in Dresden could not have been predicted by a usual inspection regime, according to the independent investigation. Carola Bridge in September. Credit: City of Dresden Professor Steffen Marx of the Institute of Structural Concrete at TU Dresden was commissioned by the state capital of Dresden to investigate the failure of Carola Bridge’s section C, which collapsed into the River Elbe on 11 September (link opens in new tab). Last week, he presented his interim report. The investigation found that the cause of the collapse was hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking. This, along with material fatigue, led to the failure of tendons, with more than 68 percent of the tendons in section C severely damaged. The water ingress which led to the corrosion damage would have happened while the bridge was under construction, back in the early 1970s. The investigation found chloride-induced corrosion, but the report did not attribute the collapse to this. The investigation also found that the city of Dresden had inspected the bridge according to usual standards, and it had commissioned special reports. The report says that it wouldn’t have been possible to reliably predict the collapse through these methods. The interim report also says that the bridge’s standing sections (termed A and B) can’t be put back into operation. They will be demolished and the bridge replaced. The city is planning to clear section C out of the shipping channel by the end of the year. This week, it plans to install an acoustic monitoring system on sections A and B. This sound emission monitoring system will record in real time the condition of prestressed steel in sections A and B. By the middle of January 2025, this system will have generated enough data to allow the city to decide whether it is safe to permit navigation under these sections.

Historic Uk Suspension Bridge Fully Dismantled
The 1,800 parts of a historic suspension bridge in the northeast of England are now safely in storage, ready for testing and restoration. Damage to the bridge in 2019 prompted an inspection, and in response it was closed the following year. Then followed two years of engineering planning to ensure work did not further damage the delicate structure. The bridge is a historic monument, and Durham County Council and its contractor VolkerLaser are working closely with two central government bodies, Historic England and The Environment Agency. Reconstruction will continue in the spring.
