Smiths Detection Becomes First And Only Supplier To Receive Certification For Its Automated Prohibited Items Detection System
Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, and a business of Smiths Group, is proud to announce that its iCMORE Automated Prohibited Items Detection Systems (APIDS) algorithm has received local approval from the Netherlands’ National Coordinator for Security and Counter-terrorism (NCTV). Smiths Detection becomes the first and only supplier to receive this prestigious approval, setting an industry benchmark and reinforcing its position as the most trusted, reliable and innovative partner for innovative detection technology. The algorithm was rigorously tested, verified and validated by the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), a European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) certified test centre. iCMORE APIDS uses AI to identify a wide range of prohibited objects at airport security checkpoints, automating the detection of an extensive list of prohibited items while bags pass through CT security screening machines. The algorithm provides invaluable support to security screeners, enhancing security and creating a faster and more seamless experience for passengers. This unique achievement empowers Dutch airports to deploy advanced detection capabilities with complete confidence, knowing they are equipped with the most reliable tools to detect prohibited items and fortify security at checkpoints. It also marks a major step in our journey towards full automation and alarm-only viewing, reducing manual screening interventions, and enabling our customers to achieve substantial operational savings. Cymoril Metivier, Global Director Digital at Smiths Detection, said: “This certification reaffirms our commitment to being best in class, offering unmatched and proven capabilities that meet the highest certification standards – setting a new industry benchmark as the trusted partner for cutting-edge detection solutions. We remain committed to leading the way in delivering innovative and revolutionary solutions that elevate passenger safety and experience, ensure compliance with the highest and evolving security standards and safeguard critical operations across the aviation industry.” A letter received from Robert Moerland, Head of Civil Aviation Security at NCTV, states that the outcome of the national certification test shows the APIDS software met the strict criteria of APIDS standard 1 and the additional Dutch national detection requirements for APID software standard 1. The approval confirms that the Smiths Detection APIDS algorithm meets both the EU APIDS Standard 1 requirements, as outlined in Attachment 12-M of EU Decision C(2015) 8005 and the additional Dutch national detection standards specified in the “national additional detection requirements for security equipment.” Give your business an edge with our leading Future Airport

Vestergaard Company Launches Semi-Automatic Deicing System
Using LIDAR radars OPTIM-ICE initiates a job by scanning the aircraft in one quick pass. The software immediately recognizes the aircraft surface and selects the appropriate deicing patterns. The software then takes over and assists the operator by moving the nozzle in pre-selected patterns across the wing and stabilizer. The radars ensure that the nozzle or telescope cannot touch the aircraft surfaces. A software will slow down the approach and stop it completely at designated distance (typically 1 meter). The operator is still in control, and it is his or her judgment whether the surfaces are clean, but OPTIM-ICE performs the operation semi-automatically. Training can be reduced as the software assists the operator. OPTIM-ICE can be ordered on new Elephant BETA deicers and be retrofitted to newer models. New $2.6Bn Terminal 3 West Modernisation Project To Expand San Francisco International Airport Takes Off
Posted: 22 August 2024 | Gabriel Higgins | No comments yet San Francisco International Airport unveil plans of their latest project to renovate and expand Terminal 3 sustainably that will see state-of-the-art bag-drops, new security checkpoints as well as more space for food, beverage and retail concessions. Plans for a $2.6bn construction project at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to renovate one of their terminals are underway. The Terminal 3 West Modernisation project, which was originally proposed in 2020 though subsequently postponed that year, looks to create 200,000 square feet of additional space. “We want our residents to be proud of their hometown airport and for visitors to experience what makes our region great the moment they step off an airplane,” says Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed. SFO are targeting this project to achieve LEED Platinum certification, which is the world’s most widely used green building rating system, and the highest level of certification for sustainability in building management and construction. Features of this construction include, displacement ventilation, low carbon steel and concrete, energy smart baggage handling, and health-friendly materials. “This Terminal 3 West Modernisation project is another major step that will ensure SFO continues to reflect the innovation, sustainability, and diversity that make San Francisco such an amazing place”, continues Mayor Breed. For the influx of international passengers that will arrive to Terminal 3, direct access to the Customs Hall located in the international terminal will be provided via a new Federal Inspection Service (FIS) sterile connector. It will also create a welcoming new exterior façade greeting travellers curb side, more space for check-in, including state-of-the-art self-bag drop, and new security checkpoints, including one on the mezzanine level for AirTrain passengers. “We are excited to launch this renovation and expansion project for Terminal 3,” said SFO Airport Director, Ivar C. Satero. “Our goal is to create an extraordinary airport experience for our guests, leading the way in sustainability and innovation, and we expect this project will once again raise the bar for what travellers can look forward to at SFO.” The project also includes a new six-story building which will house both airline lounges and operational office space. The renovated and expanded western half is expected to open in fall 2027, with the six-story building opening in early 2028. A renovated check-in lobby on the eastern end of Terminal 3 is expected to open in early 2029. The existing western half of Terminal 3, which is 650,000 square feet, will get an expanded security checkpoint and new passenger amenities. The new space that this project will create will also allow for an expansion of the food, beverage, and retail sectors of the airport. At its peak, the project is anticipated to employ 500-600 workers and is targeting to award over $173m in contracts to Local Business Enterprises (LBE). United Airlines make up their largest carrier, accounting for 45.1% of seats as of 2022 figures, with flights operating out of Terminal 3 predominantly domestic, now increasingly have expanded more international routes. “We are always looking for ways to continue growing our operation in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we are thrilled that these state-of-the-art improvements to airport facilities will entice even more people to visit us here,” says Lori Augustine, Vice President of Airport Operations for United’s SFO Hub. “We’ve had an incredible partnership with the airport for many decades, and our work with them on the T3 West project is a symbol of our commitment to San Francisco and the faith we have in this city as one of the most desirable places to live, work, and visit.” During the construction, a temporary walkway will allow passengers to traverse from various terminals and boarding areas around the project site. This will be available from the holiday season 2024. Uk Government Approves London City Airport Passenger Cap Increase, Rejects Saturday Extension
Posted: 20 August 2024 | International Airport Review | No comments yet London City Airport’s plan to boost its passenger cap to nine million annually has been approved by the UK government, though the proposal to extend Saturday operating hours has been denied, balancing expansion with local community concerns. Credit: London City Airport The UK government has announced that it has approved London City Airport’s request to raise its annual passenger cap from 6.5 million to nine million, alongside a plan to add three extra flights in the first half hour of operations on weekdays. The decision marks a significant step for the airport as it seeks to accommodate growing passenger demand. However, the government did not grant approval for the airport’s proposal to extend its Saturday operating hours. Currently, London City Airport closes at 12:30 on Saturdays. The airport had sought permission to remain open until 18:30, which it argued would offer passengers greater flexibility and choice. Despite this setback, the airport’s application did not propose an increase in the total number of annual flights or new infrastructure developments. A notable aspect of the airport’s planning application was its commitment to allow only cleaner, quieter, next-generation aircraft to operate during any extended hours, a first for a UK airport. Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, said: “While we welcome the approval to increase our passenger numbers, we are disappointed with the government’s decision to reject our proposal to fly from 12:30 to 18:30 on Saturday afternoons. “As the government has recognised in its decision, rejecting our request to extend our Saturday afternoon operating hours will slow down airlines bringing cleaner, quieter next generation aircraft to the airport. Local residents would have had the added benefit of these aircraft operating at the airport throughout the week, not just in the extended operating hours.” The approval to increase the passenger cap reflects the government’s recognition of the airport’s role in supporting economic growth and connectivity, but the rejection of extended Saturday hours suggests a careful balance between expansion and the concerns of the local community. Climate Activists Disrupt Traffic At Four German Airports
Posted: 20 August 2024 | International Airport Review | No comments yet Climate activists from Letzte Generation disrupted operations at four German airports, leading to arrests and prompting a response from the German government to consider stricter penalties for such actions. Credit: Thilo Schmuelgen/Reuters In a co-ordinated protest on 15 August 2023, climate activists from the group Letzte Generation (Last Generation) temporarily disrupted operations at four major airports in Germany: Cologne Bonn, Nuremberg, Berlin and Stuttgart. The group’s action involved unfurling banners with the message “Oil kills” and gluing themselves to the taxiways at these airports. The group claimed that eight activists participated in the protest, with two individuals at each airport. The demonstrations led to significant delays at Nuremberg and Cologne Bonn airports, where flight operations were impacted for approximately two hours. However, at Berlin and Stuttgart airports, the activists were quickly removed by police, and air traffic remained largely unaffected. Following the protests, all eight activists have been arrested. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser criticised the actions, stating, “These criminal actions are dangerous and stupid. The rioters are not only risking their own lives, but are also endangering others.” Last Generation is recognised for its high-profile protests aimed at raising awareness about climate change. This recent action follows a similar protest in July 2024, when activists disrupted traffic at Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest, by gluing themselves to the runway. The group’s ongoing demands include a global commitment to phase out the use of oil, gas and coal by 2030, reflecting its broader campaign to address climate change through direct and visible means.
