Smiths Detection Expands Partnership With Fukuoka International Airport
Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies and a business of Smiths Group, today announces it has expanded its partnership with Fukuoka International Airport Co., Ltd. Smiths Detection will supply seven HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model S X-ray scanners complete with seven automatic tray return systems, the iLane A20. The technology will be in use in the newly renovated international terminal. The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model S is a smaller footprint version of Smiths Detection’s industry-leading, Computed Tomography (CT) passenger checkpoint scanner. The Model S is 20cm narrower and 350kg lighter than the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX which means it can be easily integrated into new airport or critical infrastructure checkpoints. Both models produce high-resolution, rotatable 3D images that provide a more comprehensive assessment of baggage contents, resulting in lower false-alarm rates. The iLane A20, a next-generation fully automated tray return system, delivers high throughput and efficiency, streamlining the screening process and eliminating passenger bottlenecks. Empty tray verification (ETV) will also be included to ensure all trays are devoid of any personal belongings, unauthorised objects, or restricted items before being returned to the tray return unit. Smiths Detection’s technology will be installed by the end of March 2025. 77 units of Smiths Detection’s 3D X-ray scanners are already in use in Japan, as well as 156 iLane tray return systems. With the ability to scan over 300 passengers per hour, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX and iLane A20 will reduce security bottlenecks, streamline checkpoints, and minimise waiting times, ultimately improving throughput and overall satisfaction for both passengers and Fukuoka International Airport. Matt Clark, VP Commercial at Smiths Detection said: “We are honoured to expand our partnership with Fukuoka International Airport. Our industry-leading technology enhances security and improves passenger experience. We are revolutionising both domestic and international traveller experience throughout Japan, alongside delivering operational efficiency gains for our partners and bringing down energy costs through our industry-leading 3D X-ray solutions.” Give your business an edge with our leading Future Airport

New $2.6Bn Terminal 3 West Modernisation Project To Expand San Francisco International Airport Takes Off
Posted: 22 August 2024 | Gabriel Higgins | No comments yet San Francisco International Airport unveil plans of their latest project to renovate and expand Terminal 3 sustainably that will see state-of-the-art bag-drops, new security checkpoints as well as more space for food, beverage and retail concessions. Plans for a $2.6bn construction project at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to renovate one of their terminals are underway. The Terminal 3 West Modernisation project, which was originally proposed in 2020 though subsequently postponed that year, looks to create 200,000 square feet of additional space. “We want our residents to be proud of their hometown airport and for visitors to experience what makes our region great the moment they step off an airplane,” says Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed. SFO are targeting this project to achieve LEED Platinum certification, which is the world’s most widely used green building rating system, and the highest level of certification for sustainability in building management and construction. Features of this construction include, displacement ventilation, low carbon steel and concrete, energy smart baggage handling, and health-friendly materials. “This Terminal 3 West Modernisation project is another major step that will ensure SFO continues to reflect the innovation, sustainability, and diversity that make San Francisco such an amazing place”, continues Mayor Breed. For the influx of international passengers that will arrive to Terminal 3, direct access to the Customs Hall located in the international terminal will be provided via a new Federal Inspection Service (FIS) sterile connector. It will also create a welcoming new exterior façade greeting travellers curb side, more space for check-in, including state-of-the-art self-bag drop, and new security checkpoints, including one on the mezzanine level for AirTrain passengers. “We are excited to launch this renovation and expansion project for Terminal 3,” said SFO Airport Director, Ivar C. Satero. “Our goal is to create an extraordinary airport experience for our guests, leading the way in sustainability and innovation, and we expect this project will once again raise the bar for what travellers can look forward to at SFO.” The project also includes a new six-story building which will house both airline lounges and operational office space. The renovated and expanded western half is expected to open in fall 2027, with the six-story building opening in early 2028. A renovated check-in lobby on the eastern end of Terminal 3 is expected to open in early 2029. The existing western half of Terminal 3, which is 650,000 square feet, will get an expanded security checkpoint and new passenger amenities. The new space that this project will create will also allow for an expansion of the food, beverage, and retail sectors of the airport. At its peak, the project is anticipated to employ 500-600 workers and is targeting to award over $173m in contracts to Local Business Enterprises (LBE). United Airlines make up their largest carrier, accounting for 45.1% of seats as of 2022 figures, with flights operating out of Terminal 3 predominantly domestic, now increasingly have expanded more international routes.   “We are always looking for ways to continue growing our operation in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we are thrilled that these state-of-the-art improvements to airport facilities will entice even more people to visit us here,” says Lori Augustine, Vice President of Airport Operations for United’s SFO Hub. “We’ve had an incredible partnership with the airport for many decades, and our work with them on the T3 West project is a symbol of our commitment to San Francisco and the faith we have in this city as one of the most desirable places to live, work, and visit.” During the construction, a temporary walkway will allow passengers to traverse from various terminals and boarding areas around the project site. This will be available from the holiday season 2024.  Airport construction and design, Airport development, Baggage handling, Economy, Food and Beverage (F&B), Passenger experience and seamless travel, Retail, Security, Sustainability, Sustainable development, Tourism San Francisco International Airport (SFO) United Airlines North America Ivar C. Taylor Swift’S European Tour Drives Passenger Surge At London Luton Airport
Posted: 22 August 2024 | International Airport Review | No comments yet Taylor Swift fans from across Europe used London Luton Airport as a gateway to attend her concerts in major cities, contributing to a 5% increase in passengers on relevant routes. London Luton Airport (LLA) has announced that it has seen a significant uptick in passenger numbers, due to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour drawing fans from across Europe. As Swift performed eight sold-out shows in London, LLA became a key transit point for many of her dedicated followers. Airport data revealed a 5% increase in passenger traffic on routes to European cities hosting the tour, with a remarkable 35% surge in flights to Paris during Swift’s first weekend on the continent. Cities like Lisbon, Zurich, Milan, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Dublin also saw higher demand on concert days. Fans arriving at LLA created a lively atmosphere, with many spotted wearing Taylor Swift merchandise and exchanging friendship bracelets- a popular tradition among Swifties. Some even left bracelets in airport shops and restaurants for others to find, contributing to a sense of community among travellers. Clare Armstrong, Head of Guest Experience at London Luton Airport, noted the impact of the Eras Tour on travel patterns, stating, “With the trend for more and more music fans to now follow their favourite artists overseas and embrace new cultures, we are delighted that London Luton Airport was the chosen starting point for so many Swifties heading to her European tour destinations during this summer. It’s been so exciting to see them both arriving and departing from LLA and, as ever, our aim was to play our part by ensuring a simple, friendly passenger experience to everyone travelling through the airport.” With the rise of “Swiftie Stays,” where fans co-ordinate international travel around concert dates, London Luton Airport is emerging as a key hub for music enthusiasts seeking to combine their passion for live events with travel. As the trend continues, LLA is poised to support an increasing number of concert-driven journeys in the future. Uk Government Approves London City Airport Passenger Cap Increase, Rejects Saturday Extension
Posted: 20 August 2024 | International Airport Review | No comments yet London City Airport’s plan to boost its passenger cap to nine million annually has been approved by the UK government, though the proposal to extend Saturday operating hours has been denied, balancing expansion with local community concerns. Credit: London City Airport The UK government has announced that it has approved London City Airport’s request to raise its annual passenger cap from 6.5 million to nine million, alongside a plan to add three extra flights in the first half hour of operations on weekdays. The decision marks a significant step for the airport as it seeks to accommodate growing passenger demand. However, the government did not grant approval for the airport’s proposal to extend its Saturday operating hours. Currently, London City Airport closes at 12:30 on Saturdays. The airport had sought permission to remain open until 18:30, which it argued would offer passengers greater flexibility and choice. Despite this setback, the airport’s application did not propose an increase in the total number of annual flights or new infrastructure developments. A notable aspect of the airport’s planning application was its commitment to allow only cleaner, quieter, next-generation aircraft to operate during any extended hours, a first for a UK airport. Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, said: “While we welcome the approval to increase our passenger numbers, we are disappointed with the government’s decision to reject our proposal to fly from 12:30 to 18:30 on Saturday afternoons. “As the government has recognised in its decision, rejecting our request to extend our Saturday afternoon operating hours will slow down airlines bringing cleaner, quieter next generation aircraft to the airport. Local residents would have had the added benefit of these aircraft operating at the airport throughout the week, not just in the extended operating hours.” The approval to increase the passenger cap reflects the government’s recognition of the airport’s role in supporting economic growth and connectivity, but the rejection of extended Saturday hours suggests a careful balance between expansion and the concerns of the local community. Climate Activists Disrupt Traffic At Four German Airports
Posted: 20 August 2024 | International Airport Review | No comments yet Climate activists from Letzte Generation disrupted operations at four German airports, leading to arrests and prompting a response from the German government to consider stricter penalties for such actions. Credit: Thilo Schmuelgen/Reuters In a co-ordinated protest on 15 August 2023, climate activists from the group Letzte Generation (Last Generation) temporarily disrupted operations at four major airports in Germany: Cologne Bonn, Nuremberg, Berlin and Stuttgart. The group’s action involved unfurling banners with the message “Oil kills” and gluing themselves to the taxiways at these airports. The group claimed that eight activists participated in the protest, with two individuals at each airport. The demonstrations led to significant delays at Nuremberg and Cologne Bonn airports, where flight operations were impacted for approximately two hours. However, at Berlin and Stuttgart airports, the activists were quickly removed by police, and air traffic remained largely unaffected. Following the protests, all eight activists have been arrested. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser criticised the actions, stating, “These criminal actions are dangerous and stupid. The rioters are not only risking their own lives, but are also endangering others.” Last Generation is recognised for its high-profile protests aimed at raising awareness about climate change. This recent action follows a similar protest in July 2024, when activists disrupted traffic at Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest, by gluing themselves to the runway. The group’s ongoing demands include a global commitment to phase out the use of oil, gas and coal by 2030, reflecting its broader campaign to address climate change through direct and visible means. Brisbane Airport Starts Construction On Aeromedical Precinct
Posted: 14 August 2024 | Emily Budgen | No comments yet Brisbane Airport are set to start construction on a new aeromedical precinct, providing a launch for healthcare in remote or rural regions. Brisbane Airport are starting the construction of an Aeromedical Precinct, serving Queenslanders in regional, rural and remote communities. The new project will be part of a partnership with the Queensland Government, enhancing emergency response capabilities across the State. Located between the parallel runways of Brisbane Airport for quick access, it will include aircraft and resources for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, LifeFlight, Retrieval Services Queensland and Queensland Police Service Aviation Capability Group. The $217 million Aeromedical Precinct will have capacity for 26 aircraft and include 18,700 square metres of hangar and headquarters space, along with 17,800 square metres of tarmac parking. The precinct will provide parking for 450 staff. “There’s nothing like the scale of Brisbane Airport’s Aeromedical Precinct anywhere in the world. This groundbreaking project will significantly enhance the level of care for Queenslanders needing urgent treatment in Brisbane,” according to Brisbane Airport CEO, Gert-Jan de Graaff.   In FY24, the Royal Flying Doctor Service flew 4,611 patients to Brisbane Airport. LifeFlight’s Air Ambulance jets airlifted 528 people, and its helicopters helped 552 people. A new patient transfer facility will care for people transitioning between aircraft and road ambulances. “Around 18 patients every day are flown in and out of Brisbane Airport. Those transfers between aircraft and ambulance will now take place inside a patient transfer hub at the core of the Aeromedical Precinct,” De Graaff added. “Currently RFDS, LifeFlight and other emergency agencies are spread across Brisbane Airport, kilometres apart. The Aeromedical Precinct will bring them together in one location, centrally located between our two runways so they can quickly get into the air. Not only will these lifesavers work together, they’ll learn from each other.” The facility will integrate and collate patient aeromedical retrieval and transport, clinical and logistic coordination, including statewide telehealth clinical and education support to rural and remote hospitals.  The precinct will also feature hangars for fixed and rotary wing aircraft, administration areas and a medical base for regional patient and donor transfers. “This is the largest multi-tenanted property built by Brisbane Airport, and we’re delighted its sole purpose is to serve the people of Queensland, in every corner of the state,” De Graaf said. “Brisbane Airport provides a vital 24/7 connection for Queenslanders in regional, country and remote communities who need critical care. “We want to commend the Queensland Government for its very strong support of the Aeromedical Precinct.” The development will be targeting 5 Star Green Star accreditation and includes a 400kW solar system. A café will provide staff in this growing precinct of the airport with a convenient place to recharge. ADCO Constructions is aiming for the completion of Aeromedical Precinct in December 2026 with 150 people employed on-site during the construction phase of the project, and more than 400 people working here once it is open.
