San Antonio International Airport Begins Runway Pavement Rehabilitation Project

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has begun work on a pavement rehabilitation plan on Runway 13R-31L – addressing a number of necessary pavement repairs in select critical areas of the airfield.

The works are intended to extend the functional life of the runway until a full-scale reconstruction effort can be mounted in the future, and have been funded in part by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP).

In order to improve the area, the project will focus on the replacement of concrete pavement sections, upgrading of electrical lighting systems and re-establishment of pavement marking across all impacted sections.

Runway 13R-31L will be closed from 12 January through to 06 March in order to facilitate the works, with the full closure ensuring construction crews are afforded continuous access to the runway, minimising delays as well as operational impacts.

The temporary closure and construction period have been coordinated with the FAA Traffic Control Tower, air carriers, tenants and nearby airfield facilities to ensure minimal impacts. Those living to the northeast and southwest of the airport will experience winter air traffic patterns during the construction period as aircraft landings and take-offs will be exclusive to Runway 4/22.

“These improvements are essential to maintaining a safe and reliable airfield for our airlines, our partners and our region.

We appreciate the community’s patience as the airport completes these essential updates, supporting safer and more efficient airfield operations for years to come.
