Advanced QPS201 imaging scanners will be deployed at selected US airports as TSA modernises passenger security ahead of the Football World Cup 2026.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has awarded Rohde and Schwarz a multi-million-dollar contract to deploy advanced passenger screening technology at selected US airports ahead of the Football World Cup 2026.

Under the award, Rohde and Schwarz will supply its QPS201 advanced imaging technology security scanners to airport checkpoints in host cities. The move forms part of TSA’s wider programme to modernise passenger screening as the United States prepares for a decade of major global events, including the Football World Cup, America’s 250th Anniversary and the Olympic Games.

Rohde and Schwarz is a global leader in AI-based millimetre wave screening technology. Its QPS201 system is designed for high-volume, passenger-friendly screening, combining rapid threat detection with an open design intended to improve accessibility and ease of use for travellers.

Frank Dunn, CEO of Rohde and Schwarz USA, Inc, said: “We are thrilled to receive this award to deliver QPS201’s high-volume and passenger-friendly on-person security screening technology to modernise checkpoints at the airports of cities hosting the matches. TSA’s continued investment in the QPS will also further expand Rohde and Schwarz’s economic impact as we grow and create jobs at our facilities in Maryland and Texas.”

Andreas Haegele, vice president of microwave imaging, added: “We are proud TSA is investing in modernising security checkpoints at the Football World Cup 2026 host city airports with our high-performance QPS201 technology platform. Rohde and Schwarz is deeply committed to our partnership with TSA. We will continue to develop and deliver innovative and effective on-person screening solutions to make airport security more efficient and convenient in the upcoming mega decade of travel including the Football World Cup, America’s 250th Anniversary and the Olympic Games.”

The QPS201 achieved TSA qualification in 2022, approving it for use at US passenger screening checkpoints, and is certified to the highest standards set by both TSA and the European Civil Aviation Conference. More than 100 QPS201 scanners are already deployed at US airports, with over 2,000 systems in operation worldwide.

Using safe millimetre wave radio frequency technology, the system screens passengers for concealed threats in milliseconds. Its hands-down scan position and open architecture are intended to make security screening faster, simpler and more accessible for a wide range of passengers.
