Amsterdam Airport Schiphol begins phased maintenance on taxiways A and B to replace ageing infrastructure and maintain safe aircraft ground operations.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) will carry out major maintenance on taxiways A and B between March and June 2026 as part of a wider programme to replace ageing airfield infrastructure and maintain operational safety.

The project will focus on sections of the taxiways between connections A21 and A25, which have been in continuous use for more than two decades. Over time, wear to asphalt pavement, lighting systems, electrical cabling and drainage infrastructure has made renewal necessary to ensure reliable aircraft ground movements.

During the works, approximately 65,000 square metres of asphalt pavement will be replaced. Additional upgrades will include improvements to rainwater drainage systems, restoration of areas surrounding the taxiways and the installation of new airfield infrastructure. Around 32 kilometres of electrical cabling will also be replaced while taxiway lighting and signage will be renewed to modern operational standards.

The works are being delivered in partnership with Heijmans, which is supporting the infrastructure upgrades across the airfield.

To minimise disruption for travellers and nearby communities, the project will be carried out in two separate phases. The first phase will take place between 9 March and 12 April and will focus on taxiway B. The second phase will follow between 4 May and 26 June and will address taxiway A.

Scheduling the works in two stages allows the airport to avoid the peak May holiday period, helping limit operational impacts during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.

While the maintenance is focused on taxiways, the works may affect runway operations at certain peak periods. During construction, fewer aircraft will be able to taxi simultaneously to and from the Polderbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways.

As a result, the Buitenveldertbaan runway may occasionally be used during busy daytime periods alongside the Polderbaan runway when wind direction and traffic volumes require it.
