HOLCIM UK have launched their first-ever podcast, ‘The Material Mix’, coinciding with International Reducing CO
Emissions Day. The podcast explores the future of materials, spotlighting current innovations changing the industry and the path to sustainable construction across the UK, with the aim of amplifying cross-industry dialogue and collaboration.
The first episode, Mind the Carbon Gap, looks into the challenges surrounding cement and net-zero manufacturing ambitions. Hosted by broadcaster and interviewer Hannah MacInnes, known for her work on Times Radio and the How To Academy stage, the episode hears from Tom Redfern, Holcim UK’s head of sustainability, Diana Casey of the Mineral Products Association, and materials expert Professor Leon Black from the University of Leeds.
With the UK committed to reaching net zero by 2050, the discussion focuses on rethinking the making and use of cement and diving into the industry-wide partnerships shaping the next generation of low-carbon cement. Currently, cement manufacturing accounts for 7–8% of global emissions and around 1.5% of all UK carbon emissions.
Commenting on the podcast launch, Lee Sleight, chief executive officer of Holcim UK, said: ‘We are proud to bring this forward-thinking podcast to the airways. Across the industry we’re all having similar conversations around sustainability, the practicalities, the innovations, and the solutions. The Material Mix is a way to bring all these conversations together in a way that offers clarity and understanding.
‘We all need to be on the same page, contractors, manufacturers, executives and academics, if we are to move towards a net-zero future. This podcast will get to the heart of challenges facing our industry today but also look ahead to 2050 and beyond.’
The Material Mix is available through Spotify and Apple, amongst other podcasting platforms. Subsequent episodes are planned and set to be released later in the year. To listen to the first episode of The Material Mix podcast series, click
