The discovery is located in reservoirs below the main gas field within the Miocene-Tarkeshwar formation. It has been officially reported to the Indian Directorate General of Hydrocarbons and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The Ambe block, officially designated as CB-OSDSF-AMBE/2021, covers an area of 728.19km². Located nearly 35km off the coast of Gujarat, the concession was awarded to Cairn Oil & Gas during the DSF-III bidding round in September 2022.

Cairn Oil & Gas holds a 100% participating interest in the block. The company expects the discovery to enhance domestic gas production capabilities, contributing notably to India’s energy security objectives.

It plans to drill two additional wells at the site as part of its ongoing exploration campaign. The company is currently evaluating the potential for developing the field further.

“The company plans to develop its offshore blocks in the East and West coast, as part of its exploration and development campaign, in alignment with Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Samudra Manthan Mission to accelerate production from India’s offshore reserves.”

In March 2025, Cairn Oil & Gas began a major offshore development project on the same block. This initiative, in collaboration with 2H Offshore Engineering and 2H Offshore (Asia-Pacific), is focused on deploying offshore platforms to facilitate an estimated ultimate recovery of approximately 20 million barrels of oil equivalent.

Cairn Oil & Gas also recently installed what is described as the first sub-sea template in India as part of its conductor supported platform project. This infrastructure is crucial for supporting cluster drilling operations and plays a vital role in monetising marginal fields within discovered small field blocks.

Cairn Oil & Gas operates across 44 blocks in India, which span approximately 47,000km² and contain substantial reserves.

The company has producing assets in regions such as Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Assam, employing technological innovations over its three-decade-long operations. Cairn Oil & Gas has a target to contribute 50% of India’s domestic production by executing multifaceted exploration projects across conventional and unconventional resources.
