SpaceX plans to begin construction next month on an eight-mile natural gas pipeline to its Texas launch facilities.

As detailed in county filings reported by Reuters on June 25, the plan aims to help Elon Musk’s aerospace company dramatically accelerate launches of its next-generation Starship rocket amid heightened competition from other space players.

The 16-inch-diameter pipeline, named "Starpipe," will terminate at Starbase, SpaceX’s company town in south Texas.

According to a document filed with the Texas Railroad Commission by SpaceX affiliate Lone Star Mineral Development, the pipeline is expected to be in service by late January 2027, offering a boost to the company’s Starship program.

The project highlights SpaceX’s strategy of vertical integration, moving into traditional energy infrastructure to control its own supply chain, critical to the company’s success in its ambitious Starship program— aiming to take humans back to the lunar surface after decades.

The 40-story Starship rocket, which is critical for the Starship project, is fully reusable and requires roughly 630,000 gallons of liquid methane per launch.

Currently, fuel is delivered to the site by hundreds of tanker trucks, a tedious, hours-long process that cannot support Musk's long-term expansion goals. As such, building a pipeline to supply gas to the launch site would help the company fuel many rockets quickly.

While Starship has completed 12 test launches since 2023, SpaceX ultimately aims to scale operations to dozens, hundreds, and eventually thousands of flights annually.

The pipeline's diameter suggests a fuel capacity that far exceeds the 25 annual launches currently authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration.

According to engineering plans filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, SpaceX intends to build a liquefaction facility at Starbase to process the piped-in natural gas into liquid methane.

Industry experts suggest the company could tap into Enbridge's nearby Valley Crossing Pipeline expansion project to supply Starpipe, which will begin on an 83-acre plot at the Port of Brownsville.

The pipeline may be the first phase of a broader energy play, with land records showing that SpaceX has signed more than 100 paid-up oil and gas leases with Texas property owners since 2023, signaling interest in drilling for its own natural gas.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell recently confirmed the company's intention to process its own propellant.

While Texas energy consultants note that independent drilling poses a steep learning curve for an aerospace firm, Starpipe secures a vital, immediate supply line for the company's lunar, Mars, and satellite expansion goals.
