powerplantNew Zealand: ANDRITZ has been awarded a significant contract by Mercury NZ Ltd to modernise three hydropower plants in New Zealand. The project will see the delivery of nine turbines and 13 generators for the Maraetai I, Atiamuri, and Ohakuri stations.
This large-scale upgrade aims to strengthen electricity reliability while increasing overall generation capacity, supporting the country’s renewable energy ambitions. The contract, valued in the lower three-digit million-euro range, will be recorded in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the first quarter of 2026.
Mercury’s assets already generate electricity entirely from renewable sources, contributing close to 20 % of New Zealand’s yearly supply. With the country currently producing around 85–90 % of its electricity from renewables, it is moving steadily towards a target of more than 98 % by 2030.
The three hydro stations, part of the Waikato Hydro System, currently provide about 10 % of the nation’s electricity. Originally built in the 1950s and 60s, they will undergo a full modernisation programme. The upgrades will lift their combined installed capacity by 76 MW, reaching beyond the current 376 MW, and add approximately 87 GWh of annual generation.
ANDRITZ will oversee the full scope of the project, including design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. Equipment production will take place in Austria. This marks the fourth major collaboration between ANDRITZ and Mercury.
