powerplantBotswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KP Group, an Indian renewable energy and power infrastructure developer, to jointly develop large-scale renewable energy generation, energy storage, and transmission infrastructure projects in the southern African country. Under the MoU, KP Group and the Botswana government plan to jointly develop such projects involving an estimated capital investment of Rs 360 billion.
The proposed developments are expected to add nearly 5 GW of renewable energy capacity and support Botswana’s objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. Additionally, the agreement includes the development and strengthening of high voltage transmission infrastructure within Botswana, as well as regional power interconnections aimed at enhancing grid reliability, system resilience, and energy security. These transmission investments are intended to support the evacuation of new renewable capacity and improve cross-border electricity flows in the region.
The MoU signing coincided with the virtual inauguration of KP Green Engineering’s new fabrication and galvanising facility at Matar in the Indian state of Gujarat. The facility adds over 294,000 metric tonnes of annual production capacity. KP Group currently has an renewable portfolio of around 6 GW in India spanning solar, energy storage, and green hydrogen, and has a target of achieving 10 GW renewable capacity by 2030.
