The European Commission (EC) has approved a €150 million Romanian state aid scheme to support electricity storage deployment, in line with the Clean Industrial Deal. The approval has been granted under the Clean Industrial Deal State Aid Framework (CISAF), which was adopted by the European Commission in June 2025. The programme is intended to facilitate the integration of variable renewable energy sources into the national electricity system by expanding electricity storage infrastructure.

The scheme will support the installation of at least 2,174 MWh of new electricity storage capacity in Romania. Additionally, the support will be provided as investment aid in the form of direct grants for the development of new standalone battery energy storage systems. The scheme will be financed through the European Union Modernisation Fund, and beneficiaries will be selected through a competitive tendering process. The aid will be based on the estimated programme budget and capacity volume, and must be awarded before December 31, 2030.

In March 2026, the EC approved a €1.1 billion French state aid scheme aimed at expanding domestic cleantech manufacturing capacity in line with the Clean Industrial Deal. The scheme backs investments that increase manufacturing production capacity for net-zero technologies including solar, onshore and offshore wind, heat pumps, and BESS technologies. Additionally, it covers costs related to key components of these technologies and associated critical raw materials. Support in this scheme will be provided in the form of a tax credit.
